1. Army Chief Gen Bajwa to stay till 2022

• In line with the legal procedure, the Ministry of Defence has modified its earlier notification dated November 28, 2019 to state that General Qamar Javed Bajwa will stay as Chief of the Army Staff till November 28, 2022.
• The words and numbers “with effect from 28th of November 2019” in the earlier notification have been substituted by the words and numbers as “for an additional tenure of three (03) years, effective from 29th November 2019 to 28th November 2022.”
• “In exercise of the powers conferred under Article 243(4)(b) of the Constitution of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, 1973 read with section 8-B of Pakistan Army Act, 1952, the President, on the advice of the Prime Minister is pleased to direct that the Defence Division’s notification No SRO 1489(1)/2019, Rawalpindi dated 28 November 2019 shall be partially modified,” said the notification dated January 28, 2020.

2. Pakistan rejects IMF demand for raise in power tariffs

• Pakistan on February 11, 2020 expressed its inability to increase the electricity prices as demanded by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) due to its impact on inflation, which has already touched the highest level.
• Pakistani, however, assured the Fund to present its alternate plan against the increasing power tariffs.
• The IMF delegation yesterday met with the officials of Ministry of Energy.
• During the meeting, the delegation was briefed on the reforms programme and performance of the ministry.
• Prime Minister Imran Khan has already decided not to put further burden on the masses as they are already facing the high inflation rate. Inflation had recorded at 14.6 percent in January 2020 — scaling the highest level in 12 years

3. Upper house passes two bills with amendments

• The Senate on February 11, 2020 passed with amendments anti money laundering (AML) and foreign exchange regulations bills that have already been approved by the National Assembly.
• Both the bills, meant to comply with the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) conditions, will now be sent back to the National Assembly for reconsideration in the light of amendments suggested by the upper house of parliament.
• Since June 2018, the FATF has placed Pakistan on the grey list a category of countries whose mechanisms to curb money laundering and terror financing are seriously deficient.
• The FATF plenary is set to review Pakistan`s status on Feb 16 amid chances that the country may remain on the grey list for another few months.

4. China virus deaths top 1,000; WHO warns of `very grave` global threat

• The death toll from the novel coronavirus outbreak surged past 1,000 in China on February 11, 2020 as the World Health Organisation warned that the epidemic poses a `very grave` global threat.
• The WHO is holding a conference in Geneva on combatting the virus as Beijing struggles to contain a disease that has now infected more than 42,000 and reached some 25 countries.
• Another 108 deaths were reported on Tuesday the first triple-digit daily rise since the virus emerged in late December.
• `With 99 percent of cases in China, this remains very much an emergency for that country, but one that holds a very grave threat for the rest of the world,` said WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus at the conference, where the virus was officially named `Covid-19`

5. AAP sweeps polls as Delhi rejects Modi`s anti-Muslim politics

• The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) swept the high octane Delhi assembly polls on February 11, 2020 in a major blow to Prime Minister Narendra Modi`s anti-Muslim politics, winning 62 seats in the 70-member assembly.
• Mr Modi`s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won a humbling eight seats.
• The verdict rejected the BJP`s campaign that resonated with calls to shoot and harm Muslim women in Delhi`s Shaheen Bagh locality, who have become a rallying point for nationwide campaigns against Mr Modi`s communally-framed citizenship law passed by parliament.
• The election result was cheered by all major opposition parties, and signalled the possibility of a united campaign against the BJP`s sectarian politics.

6. Sudan to hand Bashir to ICC for trial over Darfur

• Sudan has agreed to hand ousted autocrat Omar al-Bashir and others to the International Criminal Court for alleged war crimes in Darfur, a member of Khartoum`s ruling body said on February 11, 2020.
• The Hague-based ICC has charged Bashir and three of his former aides with genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes in Sudan`s western region during a devastating conflict from 2003.
• `Those who have been indicted by the ICC, they have to go there, Mohamed Hassan Al-Taishay, a member of the ruling sovereign council, said in a statement.
• `One of them is Al-Bashir and (there are) three others,` he later told journalists in the South Sudanese capital of Juba, where a government delegation was meeting rebel groups from Darfur

7. OneWeb: London start-up launches first big batch of satellites

• The UK-based OneWeb Company has sent 34 satellites into orbit on a single Soyuz rocket from Baikonur in Kazakhstan.
• The start-up is building a mega-constellation in the sky to deliver broadband internet to all corners of the globe.
• Six spacecraft were lofted in 2019 to prove the technology, but this year will see big batches of platforms going up on a near monthly basis.
• The aim is to have the full network in operation by the end of 2021.

8. Solar Orbiter: Sun mission blasts off

• Europe’s audacious Solar Orbiter probe has lifted off on its quest to study the Sun from close quarters.
• The €1.5bn (£1.3bn) mission is packed with cameras and sensors that should reveal remarkable new insights on the workings of our star.
• Scientists want to better understand what drives its dynamic behaviour.
• The spacecraft launched aboard an Atlas rocket, which lifted off from Cape Canaveral in Florida at 04:03 GMT (23:03 local time Sunday).
• The Sun will occasionally eject billions of tonnes of matter and entangled magnetic fields that can disrupt activity at Earth.

9. ICC to use no-ball technology for women`s World T20

• Front-foot no ball technology will be used for the first time in a global cricket tournament later this month at the women`s T20 World Cup in Australia, the International Cricket Council (ICC) announced.
• The television umpire will monitor the landing position of the front foot after every ball and tell the on-field umpires if a bowler oversteps.
• Umpires have often had to call back batsmen in recent years following TV replays which have revealed no balls.

10. Big wins for India, Germany, Australia at Kabaddi World Cup

• Three more matches were decided in the Kabaddi World Cup (indigenous style) at the Punjab Stadium on February 11, 2020.
• Defending champions India outclassed Sierra Leone 45-18 after leading 22-8 at the half time.
• In another match, Germany also recorded a comfortable 49-28 defeat against England.
• Meanwhile, Australia outplayed Azerbaijan 53-24.
