1. Pakistan among 20 states most affected by China slowdown

• The United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) has included Pakistan in the list of 20 economies across the world that have been affected the most after China suffered slowdown because of novel coronavirus.
• The affected value chain for Pakistan is textiles and apparel which amounts to $44 million from a two per cent reduction of China exports in intermediate inputs.
• The most affected countries and regions are: the European Union followed by the United States, Taiwan, United Kingdom, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Vietnam, Mexico, Switzerland, Malaysia and Thailand.
• The slowdown of manufacturing in China due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak is disrupting world trade and could result in a $50 billion decrease in exports across global value chains, according to estimates published by UNCTAD

2. Balochistan announces Holi holidays

• The government of Balochistan on March 8, 2020 notified March 9 and 10 as public holidays throughout the province to mark the festival of Holi for the Hindu community.
• The notification, which was approved by Chief Minister Jam Kamal Khan Alyani, specified that the holidays are valid only for the Hindu community.
• Dinesh Kumar Palyani, parliamentary secretary on minority affairs, welcomed the decision and claimed this was happening for the first time in the history of Balochistan.

3. MoU signed to restore 54 filtration plants

• The Punjab Aab-e-Pak Authority and Lahore Institute of Public Health (Trust) on March 8, 2020 inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for activation of 54 filtration plants in Lahore before Ramazan.
• The MoU was signed by Commissioner Lahore division Saif Anjum, authority CEO/Wasa MD Syed Zahid Aziz and Trustee of Lahore Institute of Public Health Mian Ahsan at the Governor`s House.

4. Saudi govt seals off region, closes schools, universities

• Saudi authorities cordoned off the eastern region of Qatif on March 8, 2020 in a bid to contain the fast spreading coronavirus as the total number of cases rose to 11.
• The lockdown on Qatif, a Shia-majority region and home to around 500,000 people, is the first action of its kind across the Gulf that has confirmed more than 230 coronavirus cases most of them people returning from pilgrimages to Iran.
• The lockdown comes as Saudi Arabia announced it was closing all public and private universities and schools across the country from Monday until further notice

5. 15 million put under lockdown in northern Italy

• A quarter of the Italian population was in lockdown on March 8, 2020 as the government took drastic steps to stop the spread of the deadly coronavirus sweeping the globe, while Iran recorded another 49 deaths and the national airline suspended flights to Europe.
• Italy`s COVID-19 death count is now 233, more than any other country outside China.
• The outbreak has now killed more than 3,500 people and infected over 105,000 across 95 countries and territories.

6. First Muslim running for mayor in Bavaria

• With his neatly trimmed beard, sharp suit and broad smile, Ozan Iyibas looks like a typical politician out to win votes ahead of a municipal election in southern Germany`s Bavaria region.
• But he has unleashed a mini earthquake with his candidacy as the first Muslim standing for the Christian Social Union (CSU) in a predominantly Catholic region.
• `I don`t see any contradiction in this choice,` says the 37-year-old, sitting back in an armchair and clutching a mug of tea in the town of Neufahrn.

7. US, Russia not to accept `Islamic emirate` in Afghanistan

• The United States and Russia have agreed to work together to ensure that the international community does not accept or support the restoration of the `Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan` In a joint statement released by the US State Department in Washington earlier this weekend, the United States and Russia also welcomed the Taliban`s commitment to `a political process and their prospective role in a new post-settlement Afghan Islamic government as determined by the intra-Afghan negotiations`.
• But they `reaffirmed that the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan is not recognised by the international community and at the United Nations, and furthermore, the international community will not accept or support the restoration of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan` On Saturday, the Taliban issued a statement as well, insisting that it`s their duty to restore the `Islamic government` that existed before US forces toppled their government in Kabul in 2001. But they too avoided using the term, Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan.
• American representatives drafted a joint statement in Doha on Feb 28, a day before signing a peace deal with the Taliban

• Opening batswomen Alyssa Healy and Beth Mooney scored glittering half centuries as a ruthless Australia crushed India by 85 runs to win a record-extending fifth Women`s Twenty20 World Cup in front of a heaving Melbourne Cricket Ground on March 8, 2020.
