1. Steep oil prices fall sends world markets crashing

• World oil prices crashed on March 9, 2020, fuelling a vicious selloff on stock markets which were already buckling under from the spreading coronavirus outbreak.
• Stocks tanked as the global oil market nosedived 30 percent at one stage after top exporter Saudi Arabia slashed the prices it charges customers following a bust-up with Russia over crude production cuts.
• The dollar slid versus the yen, seen as a safe haven investment.
• New York stocks tumbled with the bluechip DJIA index more than 6pc, after trading had been halted for 15 minutes when losseshit7pe shortly after the opening, triggering circuit breakers.

2. Colonel martyred in Tank search operation

• A senior military officer was martyred while two terrorists were killed during an exchange of fire in Tank district, the Inter Services Public Relations said on March 9, 2020.
• The martyred officer was identified as Colonel Mujeebur Rehman who belonged to Astore district of Gilgit-Baltistan. He is survived by a widow, three sons and a daughter.
• The security forces conducted an intelligence based search operation in Granni Sheilchan to foil a `major terrorist` activity in the area.
• Sources said that security forces cordoned off the area in the early hours of Monday morning and launched the search operation. Terrorists opened fire on the security forces which resulted in the martyrdom of Col Rehman.

3. Pakistan 11th largest arms importer in the world: report

• Pakistan is the eleventh largest arms importer in the world, a report published by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (Sipri) said on March 9, 2020.
• According to new data released by the Sweden based institute which is dedicated to research on conflict, armaments, arms control and disarmament India was the second-largest arms importer in the world over the past five years.
• `As in previous years, in2019 India and Pakistan which are nuclear-armed states attacked each other using an array of imported major arms, said Siemon T. Wezeman, a senior researcher at Sipri.
• `Many of the world`s largest arms exporters have supplied these two states for decades, often exporting arms to both sides,` he said.
• According to Sipri, between 2010-14 and 201519, arms imports by India and Pakistan decreased by 32 per cent and 39pc, respectively.

4. PIA suspends flight operation to Qatar

• Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has decided to temporarily suspend flight operations to and from Qatar in an effort to prevent spread of coronavirus, following Qatar government`s travel entry ban for different nationalities, including Pakistan.
• PIA spokesman Abdullah Hafeez said in a press release that the national carrier had suspended its flight operation to and from Qatar till March 31.
• PIA has offered refunds and travel waivers, free of charge to all those customers who had booked tickets to and from Qatar, he said, adding PIA apologises for the inconvenience caused due to night suspension

5. Third BoI chairman steps down

• Amid Prime Minister Imran Khan`s high expectation with the Board of Investment (BoI) to fetch more and more foreign investment in the country, another BoI chairman has said goodbye to his office.
• BoI chairman Zubair Gilani, who resigned from his office on March 9, 2020 citing personal reasons, could serve as the chairman of the board for eight months.
• Mr Gilani is the third Bol chairman in a row who has resigned from the post.
• According to the Prime Minister Office, Mr Gilani quit the post due to some personal reasons.

6. Border with Afghanistan closed

• Pakistan on March 9, 2020 closed its border with Afghanistan for another seven days as a precautionary measure against spread of coronavirus.
• The border at Chaman was closed on March 9, 2020 last for one week as coronavirus has also affected people in Afghanistan. As trucks carrying Liquefied Petroleum Gas and other commodities were allowed to enter Pakistan on Saturday last, members of the business community were hoping for opening of the border and resumption of trade activities, NATO supplies and the Afghan transit trade, but the federal government decided to extend the closure of border for another week.

7. Rockets mar Ghani`s swearing-in as rival inaugurates self

• Rocket fire interrupted the swearing-in ceremony on March 9, 2020 for Afghan President Ashraf Ghani, whose second-term win has been undercut by his rival simultaneously claiming the office ahead of critical peace talks with the Taliban.
• The bitter feud between Ghani and his former chief executive Abdullah Abdullah has raised fresh fears for Afghanistan`s fragile democracy just as the US prepares to leave the country following an agreement last month with a resurgent Taliban.
• Within hours, Pakistan announced its support for Ghani.
• Prime Minister Imran Khan took to Twitter to extend greetings: `I want to congratulate Afghanistan`s President Ashraf Ghani &100k forward to working with him. Pakistan will do everything it possibly can to bring peace and stability in our region.

8. Modi cancels Dhaka trip after BD detects coronavirus cases

• Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi cancelled a visit to Bangladesh next week to attend a celebration of the country`s first president, after Dhaka detected its first cases of coronavirus and postponed the event.
• The event marking the centenary of the birth of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was scheduled to take place on March 17.
• Bangladesh confirmed its First three cases of coronavirus and urged citizens returning from six countries China, Italy, South Korea, Singapore, Iran and Thailand to quarantine themselves in their homes for 14 days

9. As global arms trade thrives, US widens gap with Russia: report

• Worldwide major arms exports have increased on growing demand from countries in conflict, researchers in Sweden said on March 9, 2020, with top exporter the United States widening its lead over Russia.
• Over the five years from 2015 to 2019, international arms exports grew by 5.5 per cent from the 20102014 period, according to are port by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (Sipri).
• `Overall, arms transfers have increased … amongst the arms importing countries, the demand is high and seems to even have increased a bit,` said Pieter Wezeman, senior researcher at Sipri

10. Sudan`s PM survives assassination attempt in Khartoum

• Sudanese Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok survived an assassination attempt targeting his convoy as he headed to work on March 9, 2020 morning in the capital Khartoum, officials said.
• Hamdok said he was in `good shape` and that what had happened would be `an additional push to the wheel of change in Sudan`, where he heads a transitional government following the overthrow last year of long-time President Omar al-Bashir.
• Hamdok`s government is struggling to manage a severe economic crisis that triggered months of protests against Bashir and continued after his downfall in April.
