1. Prime Minister orders construction work on Diamer Bhasha Dam
• Prime Minister Imran Khan was informed on May 11, 2020 that as per his directions all issues related to the critically important Diamer Bhasha Dam, including settlement, detailed roadmap for mobilisation of financial resources etc had been resolved and the project was ready for commencement of physical work.
• While chairing a meeting here on national water security strategy and construction of dams to meet agricultural as well as energy requirements of the country, the prime minister expressed satisfaction over the progress made so far and directed to immediately start construction activities of the dam.
• The meeting was attended by Minister for Water Resources Mohammad Faisal Vawda, Minister for Planning Asad Umar, Minister for Information Senator Shibli Faraz, Minister for Kashmir Affairs and Gilgit Baltistan Ali Amin Gandapur, Special Assistant to the PM on Information Lt. Gen. (R) Asim Saleem Bajwa, Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) Chairman Lt. Gen. (R) Muzammil Hussain and other senior officers
2. Punjab Assembly passes two bills
• Punjab Assembly on May 11, 2020 carried out important legislation without any resistance from the Opposition. Both the bills sailed through the House within minimum possible duration as not a single cut motion was moved by the Opposition.
• Like the last session, the Opposition resorted to accusing the government of victimizing political opponents instead of bringing the house in order to devise any strategy to fight against deadly coronavirus. Treasury legislators accused the Opposition of doing politics on the pandemic, saying the government machinery was active to save people from the virus. The session started one hour and 15 minutes behind the scheduled time with panel of chairman Mian Shafi in the chair.
• During government business, the Code of Criminal Procedure (Punjab Amendment) Bill 2020 and the Punjab Village Panchayats and Neighbourhood Councils (Amendment) Bill 2020 sailed through the House, as otherwise vocal Opposition legislators remained silent spectators during the proceedings
3. JSQM-A, two separatist outfits in Sindh banned
• The government has banned a nationalist and two separatist organisations of Sindh, bringing the total number of the proscribed outfits in the country to 76.
• Informed sources told Dawn that the Jeay Sindh Qaumi Mahaz-Aresar Group (JSQM-A), Sindhu Desh Revolution Army (SR A) and Sindhu Desh Liberation Army (SLA) were the latest addition to the list of banned organisations during the current year.
• The process of maintaining a list of proscribed organisations started on Aug 14, 2001 when Lashkar-e-Jhangvi and Sipah-i-Mohammad Pakistan were outlawed. Later, on Jan 14, 2002, the government banned the Jaish-e-Mohammad, Lashkar-e-Taiba, Sipah-i-Sahaba Pakistan, Tehreek-i-Islami and Tehreeki-Nifaz Shariat-i-Mohammadi
4. Rs100m Chinese gifts land in Lahore
• Chief Minister Usman Buzdar on May 11, 2020 received a flight carrying Rs100 million worth personal protection equipment (PPE) at Lahore Airport. The PPE articles have been donated by Chinese provinces Shandong, Jiangsu and Ningxia to help fight the coronavirus pandemic in Punjab.
• The chief minister said the donation reflected strong Pakistan-China brotherly relations, adding that China had always helped the Pakistani nation in every hour of trial. `We are thankful to the Chinese government for sending PPE as Pakistan-China friendship is intertwined through the bond of immortal relations,` he said
5. Remittances decline to $1.7bn in April
• Remittances during the first 10 months of the current fiscal year rose 5.5 per cent, data released by the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) showed on May 11, 2020.
• On a month-on-month basis, remittances in April fell to $1.79bn from $1.894bn in March mainly due to sharp global economic contraction due to the pandemic.
• The country received $18.78bn during July-April against $17.8bn in the same period last fiscal year. The growth in remittances during the 10 months under review declined to 5.5pc from 8pc last year
6. Most Americans say Trump`s policies hurt Muslims: survey
• Americans are about seven times more likely to say that the Trump administration has hurt Muslims as they are to say it has helped them, says a survey released on May 11, 2020.
• The survey was conducted in February by the Washington based Pew Research Center and included `too few Muslims` as the researchers wanted to analyse their response separately.
• Forty-eight percent of those interviewed said the Trump administration had dealt with Muslims unfairly, compared to 7 percent who said it had not. The majority also said that the Trump administration`s policies had helped evangelicals
7. Asia infections spike as Europe emerges from lockdowns
• Swathes of Europe began the long process of reopening from coronavirus lockdowns on May 11, 2020, but a resurgence of infections in China and South Korea offered a sobering reminder of the dangers of a second wave of cases.
• The mixed fortunes illustrate the high-wire act governments face across the globe as they try to resuscitate shattered economies while keeping in check a pandemic that has now killed more than 282,000 people and infected over 4.1 million.
• As France and Spain embraced new freedoms and Britain plotted a path to normality, the Chinese city of Wuhan, where the pandemic was born, reported a second day of new cases after a month without a sign of the virus
8. French ex-president d`Estaing probed over assault claims
• French prosecutors said on May 11, 2020 they are opening an investigation into ex-president Valery Giscard d`Estaing over allegations by a German journalist that he sexually assaulted her after an interview in 2018.
• The investigation follows claims by reporter Ann-Kathrin Stracke that Giscard d`Estaing, 94, repeatedly touched her behind in his Paris office, officials said.
• Giscard d`Estaing, France`s oldest surviving former leader, served as president from 1974 until 1981, when he lost out on re-election to Francois Mitterrand
9. 19 die as Iran warship hit by `friendly fire` in Gulf waters
• An Iranian warship was hit by a `friendly fire` missile during naval exercises, killing 19 sailors, state media and the army said on May 11, 2020, amid tensions with the US in Gulf waters.
• The Konarak was struck on Sunday afternoon near Bandar-e-Jask, off the southern coast of Iran, state television`s website said.
• `The vessel was hit after moving a practice target to its destination and not creating enough distance between itself and the target,` it said.
• Nineteen crewmen were killed and 15 injured in an `accident` during the exercises, the armed forces said, without elaborating
10. China calls up 3 foreign-born players for first time
• China has included three naturalised players in the national squad for the first time as coach LiTie has gathered the side in Shanghai for training.
• Titan Sports reported Brazilian-born Elkeson and Aloisio, and former Arsenal player Nico Yennaris, who was born in England, joined the camp as China begin preparations for 2022 World Cup qualifiers postponed in March due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
• Elkeson was the first player of non-Chinese heritage to be called up when he played last year while Yennaris, who played for England`s youth teams, has a Chinese mother and accepted citizenship last year.
