1. Pandemic puts 86m children at risk of poverty: study
• The economic consequences of the Covid-19 pandemic could push as many as 86 million more children into poverty by the end of 2020, a joint study by Save the Children and UNICEF showed on May 27, 2020.
• That would bring the total number of children affected by poverty worldwide to 672 million, an increase of 15 per cent over last year, the two aid agencies said in a statement. Nearly two-thirds of those children overall live in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia.
• But the pandemic-driven increase is expected to occur mainly in Europe and Central Asia, according to the study, which is based on World Bank and International Monetary Fund projections and population data from some 100 countries.
2. British-Pakistani woman becomes first hijab-wearing judge
• British-Pakistani Raffia Arshad has become the first hijab-wearing deputy district judge in the United Kingdom.
• Raffia Arshad, 40, was appointed deputy district judge on the Midlands circuit last week following a 17-year career in law.
• According to a statement released by the Muslim Council of Britain, Ms Arshad was the first in a Western country to be appointed a judge in hijab and amongst a handful of female Muslim judges around the world. Educated at a Grammar School in West Yorkshire, the newly-appointed judge was the first from her family to go to university.
3. Pakistan receives orders for face masks from US, Canada, Europe
• Pakistan has started receiving large orders for face masks from United States (US), Canada and Europe.
• Concerned authorities have received information that some exporters have obtained large orders for face masks from US, Canada and Europe .
• “This is a major breakthrough,”, said Adviser to the Prime Minister on Commerce and Investment Abdul Razak Dawood on Thursday. He congratulated exporters for this achievement
4. Punjab mulls opening of restaurants, tourist spots
• The Cabinet Committee for the Eradication of Corona, which met here May 28, 2020 under the chair of Senior Minister Abdul Aleem Khan, sought approval of the National Command & Operation Centre (NCOC) for opening of restaurants and tourists’ spots in the province.
• It also decided to link the Punjab Public Service Commission’s interviews for different posts with the observance of anti-coronavirus Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
• Provincial Ministers Raja Basharat, Mian Aslam Iqbal, Chief Secretary, IG Police and senior officials attended the meeting. High ranking military and provincial government officials participated through video link
5. China approves controversial Hong Kong security law
• China`s parliament approved plans on May 28, 2020 to impose a security law on Hong Kong that has ratcheted up tensions with the US and sparked new protests over fears the city is losing its special freedoms.
• The vote by the rubber-stamp National People`s Congress (NPC) came hours after the United States revoked the special status conferred on Hong Kong, paving the way for the territory to be stripped of trading and economic privileges.
• US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said the status had been withdrawn because China was no longer honouring its handover agreement with Britain to allow Hong Kong a high level of autonomy. `No reasonable person can assert today that Hong Kong maintains a high degree of autonomy from China,` Pompeo said
6. India says it`s engaged directly with China
• India said on May 28, 2020 it was engaged directly with China to peacefully resolve a border standoff that Indian experts say could set off an unintended conflict, but which Beijing has described as a broadly stable situation.
• The comment came from an Indian foreign ministry spokesperson in response to a journalist`s question about President Donald Trump`s offer to mediate between the two countries.
• `We are fully engaged with the Chinese side to peacefully resolve the issue,` The Hindu quoted Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Anurag Srivastava as saying when asked about Trump`s assertion that he had conveyed to India and China his willingness to `mediate or arbitrate` on the `raging border dispute` between them
7. US deaths top 100,000 as nations reimpose distancing
• The US coronavirus death toll passed 100,000, as some countries reimposed social distancing rules following a resurgence of cases that raised the spectre of a dreaded second wave of infections.
• The economic fallout from the pandemic was again laid bare on May 28, 2020 as airlines reported fresh financial hits and staff cuts and car giant Nissan announced mammoth losses.
• Deaths and infections continued to climb. Fatalities in Europe topped 175,000, and fresh reports suggested the toll in the continent`s hardest-hit country, Britain, might be worse than thought.
8. Italy unearths Roman mosaic after century-long hunt
• Archaeologists have discovered an exquisitely preserved Roman mosaic under a vineyard in northern Italy after a century of searching, the local mayor said on May 28, 2020.
• The brightly coloured geometric design, partly unearthed outside Negrar di Valpolicella near Verona, is thought to have been part of a villa archaeologists first started looking for in 1922.
• `When I saw the mosaic it was very impressive because of the quality, the well-preserved colours, the preservation of the mosaic itself,` said Mayor Roberto Grison.
9. South Korea re-imposes some social restrictions as new cases emerge
• South Korea on May 28, 2020 re-imposed a series of coronavirus social distancing measures it had eased early this month, as a series of clusters threatened to challenge its success in containing the epidemic.
• The country has been held up as a global model in how to curb the virus, but reported its biggest spike in new infections in nearly two months as life appeared returning to normal.
• The new cases — mostly centred in the Seoul metropolitan area where half the South Korean population lives — prompted officials to strengthen social distancing rules that were eased on May 6. Museums, parks and art galleries will all be closed again from Friday for two weeks, said health minister Park Neung-hoo, while companies were urged to re-introduce flexible working, among other measures
10. Researchers create bionic Jellyfish that swim faster
• Engineers at Caltech and Stanford University have developed a tiny prosthetic that enables jellyfish to swim faster and more efficiently than they normally do, without stressing the animals.
• The researchers behind the project envision a future in which jellyfish equipped with sensors could be directed to explore and record information about the ocean.
• Jellyfish use a pulsing motion to propel themselves forward, swishing their tentacles as they move to capture prey. The new prosthetic uses electrical impulses to regulate—and speed up—that pulsing, similar to the way a cardiac pacemaker regulates heart rate. The device, which is neutrally buoyant in water, is about two centimeters in diameter and is attached to the body of the jellyfish via a small wooden barb.
