1. Army shoots down Indian spy drone along LoC

• Pakistan Army troops shot down an Indian spy drone along the heavily militarised Line of Control (LoC) in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) on June 28, 2020, in what was the ninth such shooting in the current year, the military`s media affairs wing said.
• `Pakistan army troops shot down an Indian spying quad copter in Hot Spring sector along LoC. The quadcopter had intruded 850 metres on Pakistani side of the LoC,` said Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR) chief Maj Gen Babar Iftikhar in a tweet.
• `This is ninth Indian quadcopter shot down by Pakistan army troops this year,` he added.
• Hot Spring sector is locally known as Tatta Pani sector and is part of Kotli district.


2. Balochistan PA passes budget, rejects cut motions

• The Balochistan Assembly on June 28, 2020 night passed the annual budget of the province of over Rs451.97 billion for the year 2020-21 in its marathon budget session and rejected all cut motions moved by opposition members on demands for grants.
• Provincial Finance Minister Mir Zahoor Ahmed Buledi presented 93 demands for grants one by one in the house on which Nasrullah Zerey of the Pakhtunkhwa Milli Awami Party (PkMAP), Mir Alchtar Hussain Langove, Akbar Mengal and Ahmed Nawaz Baloch of Balochistan National Party (Mengal) and Younus Aziz Zehri of Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam-Fazl moved cut motions.
• The finance minister presented 60 demands for grants of Rs295.96bn for non development expenditure and 33 demands for grants of over Rs156.67bn for the Public Sector Development Programme.


3. NDMA to get locally made ventilators this week: ministry

• The Ministry of Science and Technology will hand over the first batch of eight to 10 locally-manufactured ventilators this week to the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA).
• `It is a matter of pride that now Pakistan is among countries that manufacture their own ventilators.
• It is particularly important because ventilators are complicated machines. Not a lot of countries have the capabilities to manufacture such complex machines,` said Minister for Science and Technology Fawad Chaudhry.


4. Elections for GB Legislative Assembly set for Aug 18

• President Dr Arif Alvi has approved the election schedule for the Gilgit-Baltistan Legislative Assembly.
• According to the federal Ministry of Kashmir Affairs and Gilgit-Baltistan, polls will be held on Aug 18 this year.
• The GB Legislative Assembly was dissolved on completion of its term on June 24 and as per the law elections have to be held within 60 days to elect new members.
• The GB Election Commission will hold the elections in 24 constituencies of the region.


5. Covid-19 cases hit 10m mark across the world

• Worldwide confirmed coronavirus infections hit the 10 million mark on June 28, 2020 as voters in Poland and France went to the polls for virus delayed elections.
• US Vice President Mike Pence called off campaign events in Florida and Arizona after surges in infections prompted worries that America has lost control of its outbreak.
• New clusters of cases at a Swiss nightclub and in the central English city of Leicester showed that the virus was still circulating widely in Europe, though not at the exponential rate of growth seen in parts of the US, Latin America and India. Wearing mandatory masks, social distancing in lines and carrying their own pens to sign voting registers, French voters cast ballots in a second round of municipal elections. Poles also wore masks and used hand santizer, and some in virus-hit areas were told to mail in their ballots to avoid further contagion.


6. Low turnout expected as France votes in local polls

• French people went to the polls wearing face masks on June 28, 2020 in the final round of municipal elections expected to yield a rebuke for President Emmanuel Macron`s party.
• Amid persistent fears of coronavirus contagion, just over 15 percent of voters had turned out by midday fewer even than four hours into the first election round on March 15 marked by a record 55-percent abstention rate.
• Polls opened for 12 hours for some 16.5 million eligible voters at 8am in nearly 5,000 cities and towns, about 15 percent of the country`s municipal councils, where the first election round did not yield a decisive outcome


7. China reviews heavily criticised Hong Kong security bill

• China`s legislature on June 28, 2020 began reviewing a controversial national security bill for Hong Kong that critics worldwide say will severely compromise human rights in the semi-autonomous Chinese territory.
• The National Peoples Congress Standing Committee took up the bill at the start of a three-day session, China`s official Xinhua News Agency reported. China has said it is determined to enact the law, and its passage is expected by Tuesday.
• The US says it will respond by end-ing favorable trading terms granted to the former British colony after it passed to Chinese control in 1997. The Senate on Thursday unanimously approved a bill to impose sanctions on businesses and individuals including the police that undermine Hong Kong`s autonomy or restrict freedoms promised to the city`s residents.


8. Iceland president re-elected with 92pc vote

• Iceland`s President Gudni Johannesson has been reelected with a whopping 92 percent of the vote, according to final results released on June 28, 2020.
• The former history professor won his second four-year term in the largely symbolic position in Saturday`s vote, the second election held by a European country after coronavirus lockdowns were lifted.
• Since suffering spectacular bank failures in 2008, the volcanic North Atlantic island of 365,000 inhabitants has recovered some economic and political stability, which worked in the 52-yearold independent`s favour


9. Former slave island Goree renames square against racism

• Goree, an island off linked closely linked with the African slave trade, has decided to rename one of its main squares in response to racist violence in the world.
• The municipal council unanimously agreed on June 27, 2020 to rename the Place de l`Europe as Place de la Liberte et de la Dignite humaine (Liberty and Human Dignity Square), the mayor Augustin Senghor said in a press release.
• The 28-hectare island, situated two kilometres (1.2 miles) offshore from Dakar, was the largest slave-trading centre on the African coast between the 15th and 19th century, according to the UN`s cultural agency


10. Biden urges India to restore rights of Kashmiri people

• Democratic presidential nominee and former US vice president Joe Biden wants India to restore the rights of people of occupied Kashmir and has expressed disappointment over recent constitutional amendments that specifically target Muslims.
• In a policy paper `Agenda for Muslim American community` posted recently on his campaign website, Mr Biden clubbed Kashmir and Assam in India with the forced detention of over a million Uyghur Muslims in western China, and discrimination and atrocities against Myanmar`s Rohingya Muslim minority.
• `In Kashmir, the Indian government should take all necessary steps to restore rights for all the people of Kashmir. Restrictions on dissent, such as preventing peaceful protests or shutting or slowing down the Internet, weaken democracy,` says the paper while outlining the policies Mr Biden will pursue if elected president in November.
