  1. Pakistan, Iran agree to reopen border gate as “Zero Point”
  • Pakistani and Iranian officials agreed on April 28, 2018 to mount efforts to reopen the border crossing at Taftan that has been closed for the last three months.
  • A Pakistani delegation led by Assistant Commissioner of Taftan Zafar Ali met his Iranian counterpart at the Pak-Iran border and discussed the situation arising out of the continued closure of the crossing known as “Zero Point”.
  1. Xi, Modi agree to reduce border tensions
  • Chinese President Xi Jinping and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi ended informal meetings April 28, 2018 with a promise to reduce border tensions after a high-altitude standoff in the Himalayas last year.
  • The leaders have spent two days in the central Chinese city of Wuhan for discussions on how to mend ties strained when troops from both sides came eyeball-to-eyeball in the disputed Doklam area.
  • The leaders “underscored the importance of maintaining peace and tranquility in all areas of the India-China border region”, Indian’s foreign ministry said in a statement following the meeting.

  1. World oldest person dies at age of 117
  • The world’s oldest person has died in Japan aged 117, making her the third oldest person ever to live.
  • Nabi Tajima passed away on April 28, 2018 in hospital where she had been staying since January.
  • The supercentenarian was born on August 4, 1900, and became the world’s oldest person seven months ago after Violet Brown died in Jamaica also aged 117. Nabi had 160 descendants including great-great-great-grandchildren while living in the town of Kikai. She was born in a village on the Japanese island of Kikaijima when Emperor Meiji ruled the country.
  1. S Arabia downs four Yemeni rebel missiles
  • Saudi Arabia on April 28, 2018 intercepted four ballistic missiles fired by Yemeni rebels, the Saudi-led coalition against the insurgents said, with a local official reporting one man had been killed in the attack. The missiles were headed towards the city of Jizan in southern Saudi Arabia, according to a coalition statement.
  • While the coalition said the attack claimed no casualties, Jizan´s civil defence spokesman Colonel Yahya Abdullah al-Qahtani told Saudi-owned Al-Arabiya television that a Saudi Arabian citizen had been killed by falling shrapnel.
  1. India warned over ceasefire violations in DGMOs phone contact
  • The Pakistan Army has told Indian military that its ceasefire violations along the Line of Control are escalating an already tense situation, besides adding to miseries of people living along the Line of Control 219 of whom have already fallen victim to the Indian shelling this year.
  • This was conveyed during a hotline conversation between Pakistani Director General Military Operations Maj Gen Sahir Shamshad Mirza and his Indian counterpart Lt Gen Anil Chauhan.

  1. Russia, Turkey, Iran stress unity at Syria talks
  • Russian, Iranian and Turkish foreign ministers on April 28, 2018 talked up their successes in brokering a political solution to the Syrian conflict at a meeting in Moscow.
  • The three nations have been attempting to resolve the Syrian conflict at talks that started last year in Astana, Kazakhstan, in competition with a US and UN-backed Geneva initiative.

  • The UN Security Council backed a US-drafted resolution that urges Morocco and the Polisario Front to prepare for talks on settling the decades-old conflict over Western Sahara.
  • The council renewed for six months the mandate of a UN mission that has been monitoring a ceasefire in Western Sahara since 1991 and spelled out steps for a return to negotiations.
  • China, Russia and Ethiopia abstained, but the measure passed with support from all 12 other countries in the council.
  1. Ruling party in Armenia withdraws from PM race
  • Armenia´s ruling party said on Saturday it would not put forward any candidate for prime minister to avoid stoking tensions after more than two weeks of street protests against the South Caucasus nation´s ruling elite.
  • Parliament is due to pick a prime minister on May 1 after the protests, fuelled by anger over the ruling party´s behaviour and official corruption, led on Monday to the resignation of Serzh Sarksyan as premier. Sarksyan had previously been president for a decade.
  • Eduard Sharmazanov, a spokesman for the ruling Republican Party, said on Saturday it would not put forward any candidate to become prime minister, but would vote as a bloc and unanimously after considering other candidates
  1. Pakistan hammer Hong Kong 10-1 in Youth Olympics
  • In the classification match for 5th-8th places at the Asian hockey qualifiers for the Youth Olympics in Bangkok, Pakistan pulled off a massive 10-1 win over Hong Kong.
  • Murtaza Yaqoob and Muhammad Waqas scored thrice while Mohsin Khan found the net twice. Hammad Anjum and Zulqarnain scored one goal each.

  1. Olympian Norman is honoured after 50 years
  • Peter Norman, the Australian sprinter who stood on the podium alongside Tommie Smith and John Carlos when the two Americans gave their Black Power salutes at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics, has been awarded Australia`s highest Olympic award, 50 years after the event.
  • The Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) said on April 28, 2018 that it had awarded a posthumous Order of Merit to Norman, who died in 2006, in belated recognition of his role in one sport`s most powerful human rights protests.
