1. Punjab cabinet decides to import 0.3m tonnes of sugar

• The provincial cabinet, which met here on October 6, 2020 with Chief Minister Usman Buzdar in the chair, decided to import 300,000 tonnes of sugar through the Trading Corporation of Pakistan and told the food department to enter into an agreement with the TCP for purchasing the imported sweetner.
• The meeting also decided to amend the Sugar Factories Control Act (1950) for authorising the government to fix zone-wise dates for starting the sugarcane crushing season. It constituted a ministerial committee to submit recommendations within three days for fixing the sugarcane price in the province.

2. Islamabad`s first mayor announces surprise resignation

• The first elected mayor of Islamabad announced his surprise resignation on October 6, 2020, a day after the federal government embarked on an effort to strip the local government of various key directorates.
• Mayor Sheikh Anser Aziz, a close aide to former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, announced his resignation on social media by sharing a photograph of a letter dated Oct 1. He resigned five months before his five-year tenure in office would be complete.
• Earlier this week, he inaugurated a filtration plant in I-10, where he said he would continue serving the people of the city.

3. COAS General Bajwa inaugurates Software Technology Park in Gilgit

• Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa inaugurated state-of-the-art Software Technology Park, an initiative of the Special Communication Organisation (SCO), in Gilgit on Tuesday.
• According to a press release issued by the Inter Services Public Relations, the facility will help create environment for research and innovation in the fields of IT and defence communication by honing and harnessing skills of brilliant youth of the country. It will also serve as a trigger for development of cyber industry in the area.

4. World economy faces long, hard climb out of pandemic: IMF

• The global economy is in `less dire` shape than it was in June but risks crashing again if governments end fiscal and monetary support too soon, fail to control the coronavirus and ignore emerging market debt problems, International Monetary Fund Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva said on October 6, 2020.
• Georgieva told an online London School of Economics event that the IMF will make a small upward revision to its global economic output forecasts next week, adding: `My key message is this: The global economy is coming back from the depths of this crisis

5. Shelling transforms Karabakh capital into ghost town

• Normally a bustling little city known for its fresh air high in the Caucusus mountains, Stepanakert is now disfigured and most of its 55,000 ethnic Armenian inhabitants have fled Azerbaijani attacks

6. Kyrgyzstan cancels parliament election results after unrest

• The Central Election Commission of Kyrgyzstan declared the results of the weekend`s parliamentary election invalid on October 6, 2020 after mass protests erupted in the Kyrgyz capital, Bishkek, and other cities, with opposition supporters seizing government buildings overnight and demanding a new election.
• Hundreds were injured, and one person died. Members of several opposition parties announced plans to oust the president and form a new government.

7. India not willing to avail remedy in Jadhav case

• A bench of the Islamabad High Court (IHC) was informed on October 6, 2020 that the Indian authorities and Indian spy Kulbhushan Jadhav seemed unwilling to avail the remedy and consular access opportunities extended to them repeatedly under International Court of Justice (Review and Reconsideration) Ordinance 2020 promulgated in compliance with the International Court of Justice (ICJ) directives.
• Attorney General for Pakistan Khalid Jawed Khan apprised the bench that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on September 4 forwarded the IHC order to the Indian Ministry for External Affairs in order to extend yet another opportunity to them to join the legal proceedings pending in this court, but neither the Indian government nor Commander Jadhav of the Indian intelligence agency, Research and Analysis Wing (RAW), appear interested in appointing counsel as per Legal Pracddoners and Bar Council Act to contest the case or avail relief despite ICJ directives

8. UAE, Israeli ministers in `historic` first meet at Holocaust Memorial

• The foreign ministers of Israel and the United Arab Emirates on October 6, 2020 visited the Holocaust Memorial in Berlin during their historic first meeting, a major step forward for their new relations.
• Israel`s Gabi Ashkenazi and UAE counterpart Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed al-Nahyan bumped elbows in line with measures to halt the spread of the coronavirus

9. Three physicists share Nobel prize for black hole research

• Roger Penrose of Britain, Reinhard Genzel of Germany and Andrea Ghez of the US won the Nobel Physics Prize on October 6, 2020 for their research into what the Nobel committee called `one of the most exotic phenomena in the universe, the black hole`.
• Penrose, 89, was honoured for showing `that the general theory of relativity leads to the formation of black holes`, while Genzel, 68, and Ghez, 55, were jointly awarded for discovering `that an invisible and extremely heavy object governs the orbits of stars at the centre of our galaxy`, the jury said

10. Experienced Sajjad thumps Haris to lift NBP ranking snooker title

• Showing clear signs of resurgence after a long layoff, former celebrity Mohammad Sajjad thumped promising Haris Tahir 8-6 in the best of 15 frames final to recapture the 12th National Bank of Pakistan (NBP) Ranking Snooker Championship for the third time at bank`s sports complex here on October 6, 2020.
• Sajjad, who is also former national champion, had earlier won the NBP title twice in 2009 and 2014.
• Sajjad won the exciting showdown 56-27, 59-55, 60-17, 106-31, 20-61, 66-45, 33-74, 66-5, 11-67, 60-63, 17-73, 57-42, 27-63, 129-0.
