1. Court rules unelected aides to PM can`t head govt bodies

• In what may come as a major blow to the privatisation process being spearheaded by some unelected members of the federal government, the Islamabad High Court (IHC) on December 7, 2020 set aside the notification regarding formation of the Cabinet Committee on Privatisation (CCoP) last year.
• The IHC, in its short order on a petition, ruled that unelected advisers and special assistants could not head government`s committees and subsequently set aside the notification of the CCoP, headed by Adviser to Prime Minister on Finance and Revenue Abdul Hafeez Shaikh.
• A detailed order on the challenge is expected over the next few days.

2. Pakistan will have 30pc electric vehicles by 2030

• Pakistan has informed the international community that it`s working on a plan to ensure that by 2030 at least 30 per cent of the vehicles used in the country are electronic.
• Along with Denmark and Norway, Pakistan co chairs a 32-nation Group of Friends on Sustainable Energy, which is committed to a transition from fossil fuel to renewable energy.
• Pakistan is also a member of the Group of Friends on Climate Change, which is also committed to promoting the use of safe, renewable energy

• Romanian Prime Minister Ludovic Orban resigned on December 7, 2020 after his Liberal party lost Sunday`s parliamentary election, but his centrist camp appeared in pole position to form a coalition government against the victorious opposition leftists.
• In a vote seen as pivotal for the country`s future in the European mainstream, the left-wing opposition PSD failed to win enough support to form a functioning majority against Orban

4. Nobel laureates to receive their prizes at home

• Adjusting to a world where travel is hampered by the pandemic, this year`s Nobel laureates will receive their prizes at home this week following the cancellation of the traditional Stockholm and Oslo ceremonies.
• The awards in the six categories were announced in nearly typical fashion in October, albeit with fewer reporters in physical attendance.
• However, none of the winners will travel to Stockholm or Oslo to receive their diplomas and medals due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

5. Cybercrime costs to top $1tr this year: researchers

• Cybercrime is expected to cost the global economy more than $1 trillion this year, up more than 50 percent since 2018, a research report said on December 7, 2020.
• The report by McAfee Corp, in cooperation with the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), concluded that the cost of online criminal activity was more than one percent of global economic output, and also had significant non-monetary impacts.
• The researchers noted a surge in a range of attacks including ransomware, phishing, business email takeovers, spyware and crypto currency theft

6. United Kingdom readies ‘V-Day’ Covid vaccination campaign

• Britain on December 7, 2020 prepared to start its biggest ever immunisation campaign but health officials warned the drive to inoculate millions against Covid-19 would be a “marathon” stretching well into next year.
• The world-first rollout of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine is due to start on Tuesday — dubbed “V-Day” by Health Secretary Matt Hancock, who has volunteered to take it live on television to assuage any public doubts over the rapid approval

7. Indonesia receives over a million Chinese Covid-19 vaccine doses

• Indonesia has received 1.2 million doses of a Covid-19 vaccine made by China’s Sinovac, officials said, as the world’s fourth most populous nation struggles to get soaring case rates under control.
• The doses arrived in Jakarta late Sunday on a flight from Beijing, with another 1.8 million expected to be sent again next month. Although Chinese regulators have yet to clear any of country’s vaccines for mass distribution, they have approved some advanced candidates for emergency use

• One evening in 1992, a meteorite ended a more than 150 million-mile journey by smashing into the trunk of a red Chevrolet Malibu in Peekskill, New York.
• The car’s owner reported that the 30-pound remnant of the earliest days of our solar system was still warm and smelled of sulfur.
• Nearly 30 years later, a new analysis of that same Peekskill meteorite and 17 others by researchers at The University of Texas at Austin and the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, has led to a new hypothesis about how asteroids formed during the early years of the solar system

• England`s cricket tour of South Africa has been called off after a Covid-19 outbreak in the England touring party, both countries said on December 7, 2020.
• The joint announcement from the two boards, which alluded to the `mental and physical health` of the players, came after the rearranged first match in the three-match series on Sunday was cancelled after two members of the England touring party tested positive for the virus.
