1. Govt decides to amend constitution for Senate election

• Despite no decision of the Supreme Court on a presidential reference filed recently to seek guidance whether coming Senate elections can be held through open ballot, the federal cabinet on January 26, 2021 decided to table a bill in the parliament to amend the constitution for holding the polls through open vote.
• Prime Minister Imran Khan, while presiding over the cabinet meeting, directed authorities concerned to submit details of expenditure the country had so far borne on litigation in international/foreign courts as the meeting was told that over $100 million had so far been spent to pay fee of lawyers for pursuing cases in international/foreign courts

2. Questions raised in European Parliament about Indian govt`s links to disinformation campaign

• The European Parliament (EP) this week held hearings on the possible threats of interference from third countries in a geopolitical context, and raised the question of whether the Indian government was linked to the massive disinformation campaign uncovered by EU Disinfolab last year.
• The hearings were part of the EP`s Special Committee on Foreign Interference which discussed the issue virtually with experts from China, Iran, India, Saudi Arabia and the UA E.
• The discussion was chaired by Member of European Parliament (MEP) Raphaël Glucksmann.

3. Pakistan gets up to 38pc lower LNG rates through revised bids

• Amid falling international market, Pakistan on January 26, 2021 received significantly cheaper bids for three cargoes of liquefied natural gas (LNG) to be delivered in March under an urgent tendering process.
• The state-run Pakistan LNG Limited (PLL) had last week cancelled bids for LNG deliveries in March for three windows as prices in the international spot market started to crash. For replacement, the PLL went for a revised urgent tender on January 22 with deadline of January 26. The revised bids attracted 26 to 38 per cent cheaper rates when compared with the cancelled bids

4. Pakistan opposes new permanent seats in UNSC

• Pakistan has firmly opposed the creation of new permanent seats in the United Nations Security Council and warned that attempts by the aspirants of permanent seats on the UN Security Council India, Brazil, Germany and Japan, known as G-4 to railroad efforts to reform the 15-member body, would kill the consensus-based process to make it more effective, representative and accountable.
• “The Inter-Governmental Negotiations (IGN) remains the only credible platform for a comprehensive reform of the Security Council,” Ambassador Munir Akram said, while re-affirming that Pakistan’s strong opposition to creating new permanent members

5. Italy PM quits to seek new govt as pandemic rages

• Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte resigned Tuesday in the hope of forming a new government after weeks of turmoil in his ruling coalition, leaving Italy rudderless as it battles the deadly coronavirus pandemic.
• He tendered his resignation to President Sergio Mattarella, the ultimate arbiter of Italian political crises, who invited him to stay on in a caretaker capacity pending discussions on what happens next

6. Senate to begin Trump trial on Feb 9

• The US Senate has fixed Feb. 9 to start the impeachment trial of the former president Donald Trump for allegedly stirring an insurrection.
• Nine members of the US House of Representatives walked to the Senate on January 25, 2021 evening and delivered a document demanding the trial. The Senate accepted the document, known as the article of impeachment, and set Feb 9 for beginning the trial. The single article charges Trump with `willfully inciting violence against the government of the United States

7. Angry farmers storm Delhi fort, spoil national day

• Thousands of Indian farmers protesting against agricultural reforms fought street battles with police across New Delhi, entered the historic Red Fort and hoisted flags.
• Growers, angered by laws they say help large, private buyers at the expense of producers, have camped outside New Delhi for almost two months, posing one of the biggest challenges to Prime Minister Narendra Modi since he came to power in 2014

9. Colombian defense minister dies of Covid-19 complications: official

• Colombia’s Defense Minister Carlos Holmes Trujillo died January 26, 2021 of complications stemming from Covid-19, the country’s president said.
• “Carlos Holmes Trujillo died at dawn today, after complications in his health while he was battling Covid-19,” President Ivan Duque said in a video posted on Twitter. Trujillo, 69, had first been hospitalized January 11

10. Poet Rehan Azmi dies

• Renowned poet Rehan Azmi died here on January 26, 2021. He was 61. He was unwell for the past few weeks. He leaves behind two sons.
• Mr Azmi was born on July 7, 1958 in Karachi. He did his schooling from the city of his birth and studied in a local college.
• Known for impressive noha and marsiya writing, he also wrote ghazals and songs. He penned lyrics to many a song for PTV, and before that for Radio Pakistan.
