1. SC orders restoration of LG institutions in Punjab

• The Punjab government suffered a setback on March 25, 2021 when the Supreme Court ordered restoration of local government institutions in the province after declaring their dissolution as unconstitutional.
• `For reasons to be recorded later, Section 3 of the Punjab Local Government Act 2019 (PLGA) whereby the local bodies were dissolved is declared ultra vires of the Constitution and the local governments as were existing in Punjab prior to the promulgation of the Section 3 stand restored and it shall complete its term in accordance with the law,` ruled Chief Justice Gulzar Ahmed

2. Deaths from Covid cross 14,000 mark in Pakistan

• With 3,946 new cases reported in a single day, the number of Covid related deaths in the country surpassed the figure of 14,000 on March 25, 2021.
• A spokesperson for the Ministry of National Health Services (NHS), Sajid Shah, said that over one million doses of the vaccine would reach the country next week.
• According to data of the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC) with 63 more deaths in a single day overall deaths in the country now stood at 14,028

3. Govt to build up revenue as IMF revives package

• After conceding breach of Pakistan`s financial data integrity, the government has secured approval of the executive board of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for disbursement of $500 million and revival of the fund programme after a year.
• This followed commitments with the board to generate more than Rs700 billion in additional revenues through general sales tax and income tax in the coming budget, increase power tariff by over 34 per cent (about Rs900bn) and withdraw Rs140bn worth of corporate income taxes through promulgation of two ordinances which have not been published at home yet

4. Wheat procurement policy approved

• The Punjab cabinet on Thursday approved the wheat procurement policy 2020-21, allowing the government to purchase the commodity at Rs1,800 per 40kg from cultivators.
• The procurement target has been fixed from 3.5 million metric tons to five million metric tons, envisaging more purchase, if needed.
• The cabinet meeting headed by Chief Minister Usman Buzdar approved four new cement plants in Mianwali, DG Khan and Khushab

5. Balochistan govt approves health insurance facility for 1.8m families

• The Balochistan cabinet on March 25, 2021 approved health insurance facility for 1.8 million families under which they would be able to get treatment in public and private hospitals for up to one million rupees for each family.
• The cabinet also extended the contract of 1493 male and female teachers recruited under the Global Partnership Education Balochistan Project.
• A committee was set up to work out a plan of action, which would submit its recommendation to the chief minister for regularising services of these teachers

6. India shares information on two power projects

• At the end of two-day hectic talks held in New Delhi on March 23 and 24 on two controversial projects at the Chenab basin, India finally shared some information/documents related to 1,000MW Pakal Dul and 48MW Lower Kalnai hydropower projects with Pakistan under the Indus Water Treaty (IWT)1960.
• India also agreed to provide flood-related data to Pakistan from time to time, besides getting the site of controversial Kishan Ganga hydropower project inspected by Pakistani experts soon

7. North Korea test-fires ballistic missiles in message to US

• North Korea on March 25, 2021 test-fired its first ballistic missiles since President Joe Biden took office, as it expands its military capabilities and increases pressure on Washington while nuclear negotiations remain stalled.
• Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga said the launches threaten peace and safety in Japan and the region, and that Tokyo will closely coordinate with Washington and Seoul on the North`s testing activities

8. Biden says `hard` to meet Afghan pullout deadline

• US President Joe Biden said on March 25, 2021 it will be `hard` to meet the May 1 deadline to withdraw all American soldiers from Afghanistan as part of a Taliban deal, but stressed troops are not there indefinitely.
• `It is going to be hard to meet the May 1 deadline in terms of tactical reasons. It`s hard to get those troops out,` Biden said in his first press conference since taking office on January 20.

9. Start of Tokyo Games torch relay offers ray of hope

• The Tokyo Olympics torch relay got underway on March 25, 2021 after a year`s coronavirus (Covid-19) delay, with officials hoping it will be a `ray of light` after the problems caused by the pandemic.
• Spectators were barred from the departure ceremony and first leg over ongoing fears about the Covid19, which forced the 2020 Games` historic postponement a year ago.
• But they will line the rest of the route during the 121-day relay, which will criss-cross Japan and involve 10,000 runners before the torch lights the Olympic cauldron on July 23

10. First TV host Kanwal Naseer passes away

• Pakistan`s first television host, anchor and artist Kanwal Naseer passed away on March 25, 2021 She was 70.
• She was the one who spoke to viewers along with Tariq Aziz during the first ever transmission of PTV in 1964, saying Yeah Pakistan Television Hai (This is Pakistan Television).
• Kanwal was suffering form diabetes and was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit of Pakistan Institute of Medial Sciences (Pims) for the last three days
