1. Citizens aged 80 and above to be vaccinated at home
• The National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC) has decided to administer Covid-19 vaccines to citizens aged 80 years and above in their homes.
• The facility will commence in a few days.
• On the other hand, the country reported 4,323 cases and 43 deaths in a single day.
• Meanwhile, an American newswire, Bloomberg, has claimed that it would take a decade for Pakistan to inoculate 75 per cent of its population despite the fact that around one million people have already been vaccinated against the deadly virus
2. Mobile free food programme extended to more cities
• On the instructions of Prime Minister Imran Khan, the government has expanded its mobile free-food programme and launched it in three more cities to help the poor, especially the labour class, get two square meals and ensure nobody goes to sleep hungry.
• According to the plan, the concept of truck kitchens `Ehsaas Koi Bhooka Na Soye` (EKBNS) will start operations in Lahore, Faisalabad and Peshawar before the advent of Ramazan. EKBNS mobile trucks carrying cooked food will visit localities of labourers and hospitals to distribute free meals
3. 5-year plan for Islamic banking industry launched
• The State Bank of Pakistan on April 5, 2021 announced the third five-year strategic plan for Islamic banking industry, with the aim of expanding the share of Islamic banks` assets and deposits to 30 per cent in overall banking industry.
• The five-year plan (2021-25)envisages 35pc share of Islamic banks in the branch network of overall banking industry, 10pc share of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and 8pc share in agriculture financing respectively, in private sector financing. Currently, the Islamic banking industry has acquired a market share of 17pc and 18.3pc in assets and deposits, respectively, by the end of December 2020
4. PTA launches CERT portal for telecom industry
• Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has launched Computer Emergency Readiness Team (CERT)/Coordination Center Portal (https://sec.pta.gov.pk) for the Pakistani telecom sector.
• PTA has introduced the CERT portal for its licensees, in continuation to its efforts to improve security posture of Pakistan telecom sector and to protect and safeguard National Critical Telecom Data and Infrastructure.
• This initiative will enable PTA and its licensees to share Threat Intelligence with each other to achieve regulatory compliance of PTA Cyber Security regulations.
5. Balochistan to get govt’s bank
• The Balochistan government has initiated process to hire consultancy services of a company for setting up a bank to boost economic activities in the province.
• The initiative was aimed at providing monetary incentives to businesses which would eventually spur economic growth and create more employment opportunities in the province, an official of Balochistan government privy to the development told APP on April 5, 2021.
• The facility would be established as a commercial, investment and development bank, being financed through a fund provided by the World Bank. He said the bank would herald more commerce and financial developments which would eventually benefit the residents of province. It would also enhance overall lending and mobilization activities.
6. Russian FM arrives on two-day visit today
• Foreign Minister of the Russian Federation Sergey Lavrov, will pay an official two-day visit to Pakistan from today (April 6).
• The Russian Foreign Minister will have delegation-level talks with Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi.
• He will call on Prime Minister Imran Khan and interact with other dignitaries, said a foreign ministry statement.
7. Only `immunised` pilgrims will be allowed to perform Umrah in Ramazan
• Saudi authorities said on April 5, 2021 only people immunised against Covid-19 would be allowed to perform Umrah from the start of Ramazan.
• The Haj and Umrah ministry said in a statement that three categories of people would be considered `immunised` -those who have received two doses of the vaccine, those administered a single dose at least 14 days prior, and people who have recovered from the infection.
• Only those people will be eligible for permits to perform Umrah, as well as to attend prayers at Makkah`s Grand Mosque and Masjid-i-Nabavi, in Madina
8. Putin signs law that could keep him in Kremlin till 2036
• Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed a law that could keep him in the Kremlin until 2036, the government said on April 5, 2021.
• The legislation allows him to run for two more six-year terms once his current stint ends in 2024. It follows changes to the constitution last year.
• Those changes were backed in a public vote last summer and could allow Putin, 68, to potentially remain in power until the age of 83. He is currently serving his second consecutive term as president and his fourth in total
9. Jordan`s king intervenes in royal drama
• Jordan`s King Abdullah II has intervened in the case involving his outspoken half brother, who is accused of a plot to destabilise the kingdom, and the former heir to the throne has agreed to abide by the traditions of the family that rules the key Western ally, a palace statement said on April 5, 2021.
• There was no independent word from Prince Hamzah himself, who in an audio recording released earlier said he would continue to defy government threats ordering him to stay at home and refrain from public statements
10. UK to announce new international travel rules
• Britain will on April 5, 2021 set out plans to restart international travel, using a “traffic-light” system as the country cautiously emerges from lockdown.
• The UK has set a tentative date of May 17 to relaunch foreign travel, currently banned except for a handful of permitted reasons. This has created massive pent-up demand for summer holidays abroad. Travel destinations will be ranked green, amber or red according to virus risk, Downing Street said late Saturday, with the government to provide more details on Monday.
• “We are doing everything we can to enable the reopening of our country as safely as possible,” Prime Minister Boris Johnson said
