1. 120,000 doses of PakVac ready for use

• Pakistan on June 1, 2021 inaugurated an antisera processing plant and launched 120,000 doses of PakVac produced from the concentrate of Cansino vaccine while the World Health Organisation (WHO) validated the emergency use of Sino vacvaccine.
• Meanwhile, the country reported the lowest positivity rate since March 1 this year.
• While the Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan (Drap) registered Pfizer vaccine that had recently reached Pakistan, the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC) announced the arrival of another 500,000 doses of Sinopharm vaccine

2. Islamabad worried about security vacuum in Afghanistan

• Pakistan is increasingly getting worried about a security vacuum in Afghanistan after the United States pullout as the already dim prospects of successful reconciliation between warring Afghan groups are growing dimmer with every passing day.
• Although another round of intra Afghan talks is scheduled to begin in next couple of days, Pakistani officials don`t seem very hopeful about a breakthrough.

3. Chairmen of eight Senate bodies elected

• Almost 10 weeks after the Senate elections, the process of formation of committees of the upper house of parliament finally began on June 1, 2021 with the election of chairmen of eight committees.
• According to an official announcement by the Senate Secretariat, Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam (JUI-F) Senator Talha Mahmood has been elected as the chairman of the Senate Standing Committee on Finance, Revenue and Economic Affairs.
• Similarly, Pakistan People`s Party (PPP) Senator Saleem Mandviwalla has been elected as the chairman of the Standing Committee on Planning, Development and Special Initiatives. Another PPP Senator Rubina Khalid has been elected as the chairperson of the Standing Committee on Maritime Affairs whereas Senator Tahir Bizenjo of the National Party will head the committee on rules of procedures and privileges

4. Vaccination certificate made mandatory

• The Civil Aviation Authority has revised guidelines regarding air travel to Gilgit-Baltistan (GB), making the Covid-19 vaccination certificate mandatory for passengers over the age of 30 years.
• `No boarding will be allowed to passengers over the age of 30 years without the Covid-19 vaccination certificate,` the revised guidelines said.
• However, boarding may be allowed to passengers of more than 30 years, who possess valid negative PCR test results conducted within 72 hours prior to the scheduled flight time until June 30

5. Index roars past 48,000 after four years

• The stock market extended the gaining spree on June 1, 2021, adding 295 points, or 0.60 per cent, to the index which stormed past the 48,000mark and hit another new four-year high at 48,191 points.
• Stocks have continued to climb all through the month of May and now on the first day of June with aggregate addition of 3,929 points.
• Banks and mutual funds led the buying on June 1, 2021, while individuals, insurance companies and foreign investors decided to book profit.
• Market opened in the positive and rose to hit the intraday high by 341 points

6. Sindh to hold matric, intermediate exams in July, says minister

• Sindh Education Minister Saeed Ghani said that exams of matriculation and intermediate in the province would be held in July and the decision regarding exams of the classes up to eight would be made within the next few days.
• Speaking at a press conference at Bilawal House, he said the Sindh government had already decided to conduct exams from IX to XII classes across the province in July while other provinces hadnot made any such decision.

7. Covid variants get new names

• Coronavirus variants with clunky, alphanumeric names have now been assigned the letters of the Greek alphabet to simplify discussion and pronunciation while avoiding stigma.
• The World Health Organisation revealed the new names on June 1, 2021 amid criticism that those given by scientists to strains such as the South African variant which goes by multiple names including B.1.351, 501Y.V2 and 20H/501Y.V2 were too complicate d.
• Since the pandemic began, the names people have used to describe the virus have provoked controversy.

8. Malaysia scrambles jets to intercept Chinese planes

• Malaysia scrambled jets to intercept 16 Chinese military aircraft off the country`s coast in the South China Sea, a rare incident that the foreign minister angrily denounced on June 1, 2021 as an `intrusion`.
• It took place on Monday off the Malaysian part of Borneo island over the fiercely contested waters, where China and Malaysia have overlapping territorial claims.
• The Chinese air force transport planes approached Malaysian airspace in `tactical formation` and flew to within about 60 nautical miles of the coast, Malaysia`s air force said in a statement.

9. US to hand Bagram base to Afghan forces in 20 days

• The US military will hand over its main Bagram Air Base to Afghan forces in about 20 days, as Washington presses on with withdrawing the last of its troops from the country.
• The vast base, built by the Soviets in the 1980s,is the biggest military facility used by US and Nato forces in Afghanistan, with tens of thousands of troops stationed there during the peak of America`s military involvement in the violence-wracked country.
• `I can confirm we will hand over Bagram Air Base,` a US defence official said without specifying when the transfer would take place

• International fashion publication Vogue revealed Malala Yousafzai as its cover star for the British edition for July 2021, leaving social media users in raptures over the Nobel laureate`s stunning photographs and the magazine`s decision to feature her on the cover.
• `I know the power that a young girl carries in her heart when she has a vision and a mission and I hope that every girl who sees this cover will know that she can change the world, Yousafzai tweeted with a link to the interview on Tuesday
