June 10, 2021: National / International Current Affairs

1. Vaccination made must for all public, private sector staff

• The National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC) on June 9, 2021 made it mandatory for all public and private sector employees to get inoculated, setting June 30 deadline for the government employees to be vaccinated.
• Besides, around 39 million people who f all in the 18 to 30 age group will be able to avail the walk-in vaccination facility from Friday (June 11).
• The forum also decided to ease certain restrictions from June 15 after a decline in Covid-19 infections was observed.

2. Rs47bn grants okayed with lion`s share going to KP

• The Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) of the Cabinet on June 9, 2021 approved a Rs43 billion grant for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to cover its cash shortfall, allowed signing of about $1bn worth of debt relief from G20 countries and agreed in principle for a $1.1bn requirement for procurement of vaccination.
• The meeting of the ECC presided over by Federal Minister for Finance and Revenue Shaukat Tarin also approved more than a dozen supplementary grants worth a total of Rs47bn just two days ahead of federal budget and disallowed a couple of others for being too close to conclusion of fiscal year. The ECC is reported to have also approved a few other grants for civil armed forces which were not made public.

3. Senate passes bill to boost US ability in competition with China

• The US Senate voted 68-32 on Tuesday to approve a sweeping package of legislation intended to boost the country`s ability to compete with Chinese technology.
• An indignant China responded to the vote by saying it objected to being cast as an `imaginary` US enemy.
• The desire for a hard line in dealings with China is one of the few bipartisan sentiments in the deeply divided US Congress, which is narrowly controlled by President Joe Biden`s fellow Democrats

4. DG FIA Wajid Zia removed, Sanaullah new DG

• The federal government on June 9, 2021 unceremoniously removed Director General (DG) Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) Wajid Zia after he developed differences with some senior functionaries of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government.
• With his removal, the government made a major reshuffle at the top level of the police bureaucracy by appointing Sanaullah Abbasi as the new head of FIA and Moazzam Jah Ansari as the new police chief of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP).

5. Bahawalpur Islamia University among top 500 Asian varsities

• Islamia University of Bahawalpur has been placed in top 500 universities in Asia with 16 other universities that have been included in the list in recent Asia University Rankings of Times Higher Education.
• According to the spokesman of the University Shahzad Ahmad Khalid, academic circles have appreciated the efforts of the Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Athar Mahboob for the continuous improvement in the national and international rankings of Islamia University Bahawalpur.
• China’s Saigon University stood first, Peking University was second and National University of Singapore declared third. In the last two years, steps have been taken rapidly to improve the status of the university

6. Pakistan’s Humanitarian Response Plan launched

• Pakistan’s Humanitarian Response Plan for the current year was launched June 9, 2021 aiming to strengthen the country’s response capacity.
• The ‘2021 Pakistan Humanitarian Response Plan’ was launched at a joint event hosted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the United Nations in Pakistan. Addressing the participants, Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi said Pakistan was making steady progress in achievement of Sustainable Development Goals, notwithstanding the challenges of climate change and COVID-19 pandemic.

7. Pakistan Navy gets new DGPR

• Rear Admiral Naeem Sarwar SI (M) has been appointed new Director General Public Relations Pakistan Navy. According to officials, Rear Admiral Naeem Sarwar got commissioned in Operations Branch of Pakistan Navy in 1990.
• The Flag Officer is a graduate of Pakistan Navy War College Lahore, National Defence University Islamabad and has qualified National Defence Course from Indonesia.
• The Admiral has an illustrious service career having vast experience of Command & Staff appointments. By profession, he is an aviator (Helicopter Pilot).

8. Biden govt drops Trump order against TikTok, plans review

• The White House dropped Trump-era executive orders intended to ban the popular apps TikTok and WeChat and will conduct its own review aimed at identifying national security risks with software applications tied to China, officials said on June 9, 2021.
• A new executive order directs the Commerce Department to undertake what officials describe as an evidence-based analysis of transactions involving apps that are manufactured or supplied or controlled by China. Officials are particularly concerned about apps that collect users` personal data or have connections to Chinese military or intelligence activities

9. Israeli air strikes kill 11 Syrian troops

• Israeli air strikes in central Syria killed at least 11 government troops and militiamen late on June 8, 2021, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.
• The strikes were the first carried out by Israel in Syria since11 days of heavy fighting with the Hamas rulers of Gaza ended with an Egyptian brokered ceasefire on May 21, the Britain-based war monitor said.
• `At least seven army soldiers and four National Defence Forces militiamen were killed, Observatory chief Rami Abdul Rahman said, adding that all of the dead were Syrian.

10. Qalandars edge out United in thriller

• Lahore Qalandars pulled off a jittery five-wicket last-ball victory over Islamabad United in the opening fixture of the HBL Pakistan Super League`s second leg at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi on June 9, 2021 night.
• After restricting Islamabad to 143-9 on an outrageously sluggish pitch, Lahore also found runs hard to come by against spinners as they found adequate purchase in the second half of the match to trouble the batters
