1. Bill specific to Jadhav bulldozed through NA

• The government on June 10, 2021 literally bulldozed legislation in the National Assembly by getting 21 laws approved, including the controversial Elections (Amendment) Bill 2020 and the bill to provide right of appeal to Indian spy Kulbhushan Jadhav, after suspending the rules of business amid the opposition`s strong protest and boycott.
• The opposition members staged walkout and pointed out lack of quorum three times, but each time the chair declared the house in order and continued the business, forcing the opposition to resort to noisy protest.

2. US Navy`s guided-missile cruiser visits Karachi Port

• The United States Navy`s guided-missile cruiser USS Monterey visited Karachi Port, Pakistan Navy`s media wing said on June 10, 2021.
• It said the visit by the carrier deployed to Fifth Fleet was part of the cooperation between the navies of the two countries for `safe and secure maritime environment in the region` `The overnight visit programme of ship included call on Commander Pakistan Fleet and table top discussion on professional issues,` the statement said.
• The visiting ship later participated in drills with a Pakistan Navy ship described as `Passage Exercise

3. Energy sector grows to 5.2pc of GDP

• Pakistan`s energy sector has grown to 5.2 per cent of the Gross Domestic Product, valuing at Rs2,150 billion, but continues to suffer cash flow issues and keeps adding to the persistent circular debt problem.
• According to the Economic Survey of Pakistan launched on June 10, 2021, thermal generation (coal, RLNG and natural gas) continues hogging country`s electricity mix, with a share of 59.42pc, up by almost 1pc from 58.43pc in 2020.
• Pakistan has also 1,289MW generation capacity to electricity, which has now reached 37,261MW against 35,972MW last year. Out of these 37,261MW, 26pc is hydel, 19.66pc RLNG, 16.84 RFO, 12.80pc coal, 12.15pc gas, 6.68pc nuclear, 3.31pc wind, 1.07pc solar and 0.98pc bagasse

4. Telecommunications Authority asked to take legal action against Facebook

• Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Kashmir Shehryar Khan Afridi on June 11, 2021 directed the chief of Pakistan Telecommunications Authority (PTA) to take legal action against Facebook over the `selective steps` it took against Pakistani and Kashmiri social media activists.
• Chairing a meeting of the committee, Mr Afridi wondered why PTA officials did not take action against the Facebook management and why the social media platform was not blocked in Pakistan after the website did not comply with the government`s directives.
• Officials of the foreign affairs ministry, a delegation of the All Parties Hurriyat Conference (APHC) and others attended the meeting

5. Pakistan lags behind regional nations in health indicators

• Countries in the region are far ahead of Pakistan in terms of health indicators and even Afghanistan is ahead of it, according to the Economic Survey of Pakistan.
• It said the Covid-19 pandemic had tested the country`s health infrastructure and identified needs for more investment in the sector, especially to improve diagnostic facilities, disease surveillance, prevention and spread, training of health personnel and their protection from pandemic, vaccine development, upgrading healthcare infrastructure, emergency rooms, intensive care units, isolation wards and public awareness

6. China passes law to counter US, EU sanctions

• China on June 10, 2021 passed a new law to counter foreign sanctions, as it looks to build its defences against rising US and EU pressure over trade and human rights.
• Beijing has accused the United States of `suppressing` Chinese firms and issued veiled threats of retaliation after President Joe Biden last week expanded a blacklist of companies in which Americans are not allowed to invest

7. Russia gives go-ahead to rice import from Pakistan

• Russia has lifted a ban on import of rice from Pakistan.
• Based on the guidelines, Russia has allowed import of rice from four Pakistani enterprises from Friday (June 11, 2021).
• The decision was based on implementation of phytosanitary measures proposed by the Ministry of Food Security Department of Plant Protection (DPP) of Quarantine Division.
• Russia had carried out inspection in February last year

8. Partial eclipse sweeps over northern hemisphere

• People across Earth`s northern hemisphere viewed an annular solar eclipse on June 11, 2021 with parts of Canada and Siberia privy to the best view of the celestial event.
• The eclipse was partly visible to observers in North America, parts of Europe including France and the UK, and some of northern Asia.
• In London, where the moon covered 20 percent of the sun as the eclipse reached totality, sky-gazers glimpsed the event through cloud cover

• The delayed Euro 2020 tournament will finally get underway on June 10, 2021, a year behind schedule, with Covid-19 still set to cast a shadow over the event.
• The continent-wide event, first envisaged by then-UEFA president Michel Platini when he announced the tournament would be held across Europe, will be played in front of limited crowds and with strict health restrictions in place.
