1. Shahzain named PM`s aide on Balochistan reconciliation

• Soon after deciding to hold talks with disgruntled Baloch tribesmen to pave way for permanent peace and progress in Balochistan, Prime Minister Imran Khan on July 7, 2021 appointed Jamhoori Watan Par ty MNA Shahzain Bugti as his special assistant on reconciliation and harmony in the province.
• The prime minister tasked Mr Bugti with holding talks with peeved Baloch tribesmen on behalf of the government. Mr Bugtihas the status of a federal minister.
• A notification issued from the Cabinet Secretariat said: `The prime minister, in terms of rule 4 (6) of the Rules of Business 1973 read with serial No: 1A of schedule V-A of the said rules, has been pleased to appoint Nawabzaba Shahzain Bugti, MNA, as Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Reconciliation and Harmony in Balochistan, with immediate effect. He shall hold the status of federal minister.` The appointment of Mr Bugti as the SAPM comes a day after he met the premier and discussed the situation prevailing in Balochistan.

2. Zahoor Agha appointed governor of Balochistan

• Hours after retired Justice Amanullah Khan Yasinzai resigned from the post of governor of Balochistan, President Dr Arif Alvi appointed Syed Zahoor Agha of the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) as new governor.
• After accepting the resignation of Mr Yasinzai, the president announced the appointment of Mr Agha asgovernor through a notification issued by the President House on July 7, 2021.
• Earlier in the day, Mr Yasinzai resigned from the post of governor after serving for two years and eight months. He was appointed governorin October2018

3. More than 10pc gender gap among voters in 80 districts

• Disclosing that around 80 districts have over 10 per cent gender gap among voters, National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) chairman Tariq Malik has said the authority will work with the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to address the issue on a war footing.
• The gender gap was as high as 52 per cent in Bannu district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, said Mr Malik at the launch of the fourth phase of a campaign for women`s national identity card and voter registration held at the ECP secretariat here on Wednesday

4. Afghan govt meets Taliban in Tehran

• Iran on July 7, 2021 hosted the first significant talks in months between Taliban and Afghan government representatives, a surprise meeting that comes as the US completes its withdrawal from Afghanistan and districts fall to the Taliban across the country.
• The high-level peace talks between the warring sides follow months-old discussions in Qatar that have been stalled by a diplomatic stalemate and escalating violence. Even as officials faced each other across vast tables in Tehran and Iran`s top diplomat pledged to end the crisis, fighting surged in Afghanistan`s western Badghis province.

5. Taliban launch assault on Afghan provincial capital

• The Taliban launched a major assault on a provincial capital in Afghanistan on July 7, 2021, the first since the US military began its final drawdown of troops from the country as insurgents press on with a blistering offensive.
• Fierce fighting erupted in the western city of Qala-i-Naw, the capital of Badghis, with the militants seizing police headquarters and offices of the country`s spy agency.
• As news of the morning assault spread, social media was flooded with videos of clashes with some showing armed Taliban fighters on motorbikes entering the city of about 75,000, as onlookers cheered

6. Haitian president assassinated at home

• Haitian President Jovenel Moise was shot dead by gunmen with heavy-caliber weapons in his private residence overnight on July 7, 2021, sparking an international outcry amid fears of a descent into chaos in the impoverished Caribbean nation.
• The assassination, which drew condemnation from Washington and neighbouring Latin American countries, coincided with a spate of gang violence in Port-au Prince in recent months fueled by a growing humanitarian crisis and political unrest. The disorder has turned many districts of the capital into no-go zones

7. Sea to stars: first Arab woman astronaut in training

• The UAE`s Nora al Matrooshi is the first Arab woman to start training to be an astronaut, one of two Emiratis picked from thousands of applicants as the Gulf nation looks to the stars.
• The 28-year-old mechanical engineer from Sharjah one of the seven emirates that make up the UAE has dreamt about space since she was a girl, learning about planets and stars at school.
• And while there are no space missions scheduled, she hopes to have the opportunity to one day visit space, continuing the tradition of exploration begun by her sailor ancestors

8. Modi fires seven ministers in Covid crisis reshuffle

• Struggling to salvage his image after a disastrous and widely criticised handling of the second wave of Covid-19 that hit India, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expanded his cabinet and fired seven senior ministers, including Health Minister Harsh Vardhan.
• Minister of Law and Information Technology Ravi Shankar Prasad, known for sharp exchanges with Twitter bosses recently, was also sacked and Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar, who stood in as the official spokesman, was dropped.
• As 43 ministers took oath, seven were sacked. The reshuffle is believed to be linked to crucial elections in Uttar Pradesh and Punjab, along with three other states, that go to polls next year. Mr Modi now has 77 ministers, nearly half of them new.

10. Dilip Kumar`s death fills admirers with nostalgia

• Legendary Indian thespian Dilip Kumar died on July 7, 2021 morning after a week in Mumbai`s Hinduja Hospital with breathing trouble.
• In an irony befitting his many fabled scripts, Maharashtra Chief Minister Udhav Thackeray, head of the Shiv Sena that once heckled Dilip Kumar as a Pakistani agent, ordered a state funeral for the DlLlP Kumar in his younger days. He also visited the family home at Mumbai`s exclusive Pall Hill district and condoled with Kumar`s grieving wife Saira Banu.
• Dilip Kumar, 98, was born in Peshawar in 1922 and named Yusuf Khan. His peers and younger colleagues alike revered the celebrated actor`s actor. Shah Rukh Khan, Anil Kapoor, Anupam Kher, Dharmendra, Shabana Azmi, Ranbir Kapoor and Vidya Balan, among others were the early visitors to condole with Ms Banu, herself a former actor.
