1. E-bike production launched to curb pollution

• Prime Minister Imran Khan on July 8, 2021 launched production of electric motorcycles in the country and said the government was revising master plans of cities of the country to preserve green areas and provide better civic amenities to people.
• `The launch of the electric motorcycle is a futuristic step as the government`s electric vehicle (EV) policy defines a direction for the future. Introduction of electric motorcycles is part of the government`s five-year Pakistan Electric Vehicles Policy 2020-2025, approved last year,` the prime minister said while addressing the launching ceremony of the production of electric motorcycles

2. UK package to help Pakistan fight new variants

• The British government has announced a new package of genomic sequencing support to help Pakistan fight new variants of Covid19.
• Under the New Variant Assessment Platform (NVAP) programme, Pakistan will be able to draw on UK expertise and support to quickly detect new and potentially more dangerous variants of Covid-19, a British High Commission press release said.
• The United Kingdom is a world leader in genomic sequencing for Covid19 variants and the second largest contributor to the international database for the variants. Under an agreement reached between the UK`s Public Health England (PHE) and Pakistan`s National Institute for Health (NIH), the British government will share its expertise and provide reagents to increase genomic sequencing capacity in Pakistan. The support will also include technical advice on bio-informatics workflow and technical processes

3. Peace in Afghanistan still winnable, Pakistan assures US

• Pakistan has assured the United States that peace in Afghanistan is still winnable as Washington urges Islamabad to be a `constructive partner` in bringing stability to the war-ravaged country.
• Addressing the first post Covid interaction at the US Institute of Peace (USIP) on Wednesday, Pakistan`s Ambassador Asad Majeed Khan also urged the US and China to work together to promote peace and stability in South Asia

4. Buddha statue recovered

• Officials of the Malakand district administration recovered a statue of Buddha from a deserted house in Thana town during a raid the other day.
• After getting information that some people had illegally kept a Buddha relic, stated to be from Gandhara civilisation, in a deserted house, Malakand deputy commissioner Suhail Khan directed assistant commissioner Mohibullah and commander Thana Levies post to take immediate action. The Levies personnel raided the house in Nal area of Thana and seized the statue

5. Edhi`s statue installed in Quetta

• A huge statue of world`s renowned social worker Abdul Sattar Edhi, who spent his entire life serving the humanity, was installed at the famous Hockey Chowk Quetta on July 8, 2021.
• Faisal Edhi unveiled the statue at a ceremony, marking the fifth death anniversary of his father.
• Ishaq Lehri, a well-known artist and sculptor from Balochistan, has made the 17-foot tall and four-foot wide statue.
• A large number of people, including human rights activists and members of civil society, attended the ceremony

6. Afghan transit trade pact extended for six months

• Pakistan and Afghanistan on July 8, 2021 extended the `Afghanistan Pakistan Transit Trade Agreement (APTTA) 2010` for six months beyond May 11, 2021.
• The extension was essential to facilitate uninterrupted flow of transit trade between the two countries and to provide sufficient time to technical teams to conclude negotiations on the new APTTA-2021, according to the Ministry of Commerce.
• The 2010 agreement superseded the Afghanistan Transit Trade Agreement that was signed in 1965. The 1965 agreement granted Afghanistan the right to import duty-free goods through Pakistani seaports

7. Taliban capture Afghan border crossing with Iran

• Taliban fighters seized control on July 8, 2021 of a key district in western Afghanistan that includes a major border crossing with Iran, according to Afghan security officials, as the militia continued their rapid military advances around the country.
• In the last week, the Taliban have overrun areas bordering five countries Pakistan, China, Iran, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan as foreign forces end their two-decade intervention and the domestic security situation deteriorates

8. Chinese city launches fight against algae bloom

• The northern Chinese port city of Qingdao has deployed thousands of boats and powered scoops to deal with a massive algae bloom that is threatening sea life, tourism and water transport.
• The thick layer of plants that has coated waters and clogged beaches appeared last month and is reportedly the heaviest on record.
• Such blooms can displace critical food sources for ocean animals while giving off a strong smell.

9. Firm wins freeze on India`s assets in Paris in bid to recover damages

• Cairn Energy said on July 8, 2021 a Paris court had accepted its petition that Indian state-owned assets in the city worth over 20 million euros ($24 million) be frozen, claiming a significant win in its campaign to force the Indian government to pay Cairn billion-dollar damages in a protracted tax dispute.
• A French tribunal ordered the freeze on some 20 centrally located properties belonging to the Indian government as part of a guarantee of the amount owed to Cairn, the London-listed firm said.
• Cairn said it had also registered similar claims against India in courts in the United States, Britain, the Netherlands, Singapore and Canada
