1. NCOC allows normal classes from next week

• As the coronavirus positivity rate has declined to 2.8 per cent across the country, the National Command and Operations Centre (NCOC) on October 7, 2021 decided to open the doors of educational institutions for normal classes from Oct 11.
• A meeting of the NCOC decided to reopen the educational institutions based on the reduced level of Covid-19 spread and the launch of vaccination programme in schools, Minister for Planning, Development and Special Initiatives Asad Umar said in a tweet.

2. ECC restricts cash redemption on remittances

• The Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) of the cabinet on October 7, 2021 empowered a committee led by Finance Minister Shaukat Tarin to ban or allow export of onions and tomatoes based on actual data and decided to restrict cash redemption of reward points on remittances to only those overseas Pakistanis who return to the motherland permanently.
• A meeting of the ECC presided over by Finance Minister Tarin also decided to allocate280,000 tonnes of wheat for the Utility Stores Corporation (USC) and 300,000 tonnes for Azad Kashmir during the current year.
• Informed sources said the commerce ministry had come up with a summary seeking to allow export of onions and tomatoes because both were perishable items and their stocks could not be sustained for long to the disadvantage of local farmers

3. Pakistan, S. Arabian navies, air forces display firepower

• Demonstrating joint combat readiness, the navies and air forces of Pakistan and Saudi Arabia showed an impressive display of their firepower in the northern Arabian Sea on October 7, 2021 during Exercise Naseem Al Bahr-XIII (NAB-XIII).
• Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Mohammed Amjad Khan Niazi and the Commander of Royal Saudi Naval Forces, Vice Admiral Fahad bin Abdullah Al-Ghofaily, witnessed live weapons firing by various naval and air units of the two countries out at sea.
• The maiden participation of Royal Saudi Air Force (RSAF) F-15 S/A in the firepower display added a unique blend to the Joint Maritime Operations conducted during the exercise

4. EU prevails at UN HR body over rapporteur for Afghanistan

• The European Union on October 7, 2021 won its battle at the UN Human Rights Council to create a new special rapporteur on Afghanistan, despite opposition from China and Russia.
• The rapporteur will be responsible for monitoring the rights situation in the country following the Taliban takeover, and make recommendations on improvements.
• `This is an essential step to ensure continued monitoring, through a dedicated and independent expert, and to help prevent a further deterioration of the human rights situation in Afghanistan, said Lotte Knudsen, the EU`s ambassador to the United Nations in Geneva

5. CIA creates working group on China, calls Beijing biggest geopolitical threat

• The CIA said on October 7, 2021 it will create a top-level working group on China as part of a broad US government effort focused on countering Beijing`s influence.
• The group will become one of fewer than a dozen mission centres operated by the CIA, with weekly director-level meetings intended to drive the agency`s strategy towards China. The CIA also announced that it would ramp up efforts to recruit Chinese speakers and create another mission centre focusing on emerging technologies and global issues such as climate change and global health.

6. Cash airlifts planned to bypass Taliban, help Afghans

• As desperate Afghans resort to selling their belongings to buy food, officials are preparing to by in cash for the needy while avoiding financing the Taliban government, according to people familiar with the confidential plans.
• Planning for the cash airlifts is going ahead against the background of a rapidly collapsing economy where money is short, although diplomats are still debating whether Western powers can demand that the Taliban make concessions in return, according to internal policy documents seen by Reuters

7. Tanzania-born novelist wins Nobel Literature Prize

• Tanzanian-born novelist Abdulrazak Gurnah on October 7, 2021 won the Nobel Literature Prize for his writings on post-colonialism and the trauma of the refugee experience.
• Gurnah, who grew up on the island of Zanzibar but arrived in England as a refugee at the end of the 1960s, is the fifth African to win the Nobel Literature Prize.
• The Swedish Academy said Gurnah was honoured `for his uncompromising and compassionate penetration of the effects of colonialism and the fate of the refugee in the gulf between cultures and continents

8. Ancient river delta bolsters search for signs of life on Mars

• Images from Mars reveal how water helped shape the Red Planet`s landscape billions of years ago, and provide clues that will guide the search for evidence of ancient life, a study said on October 7, 2021.
• In February, Nasa`s Perseverance rover landed in Jezero crater, where scientists suspected a long gone river once fed a lake, depositing sediment in a fan-shaped delta visible from space.

9. Watmore quits as ECB chairman after Pakistan criticism

• The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) announced on October 7, 2021 that chairman Ian Watmore was stepping down with immediate effect, following criticism of the decision to cancel a tour of Pakistan.
• Watmore, 63, has a reached a `mutual agreement` with the board to leave his role following the end of the domestic season after just over a year in the role.
• His position, normally held for a five-year-term, had come under scrutiny following the move to scrap the Pakistan trip, involving England`s men`s and women`s teams

10. Tallest man Ejaz dies

• Ejaz Ahmad, one of the tallest men in Pakistan with eight feet and two inches height, died in Darya Khan area in Bhakkar district on October 7, 2021. He was 42.
• Ejaz Ahmad was suffering from multiple diseases, including kidney and bone disorder, due to lack of access to proper healthcare and food, mainly because of extreme poverty. He broke his pelvic bone in a road accident some time ago and was bedridden since then in Thalla Sareen, a remote area of Darya Khan.
