1. Sindh rejects plan to revisit 1991 water accord
• Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah on October 11, 2021 told federal Minister for Water Resources Chaudhry Moonis Elahi that the provincial government would not accept the so-called three-tier formula or any other water sharing scheme except the 1991 Water Accord.
• The chief minister also called for taking concrete measures to strengthen the Indus River System Authority (Irsa) so that it could implement the water accord in its true spirit and did not allow opening of link canals in the Punjab during early and late Kharif.
• The offer to revisit the 1991 water accord was made by the federal minister during a meeting with the chief minister here at CM House
2. Iranian armed forces chief due in Islamabad today
• Chief of General Staff for the Armed Forces of Iran Maj Gen Mohammad Bagheri is reaching here on October 11, 2021 on a three day visit aimed at strengthening defence ties, a diplomatic source said.
• Gen Bagheri would be leading a high-ranking military delegation. He would meet Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee Gen Nadeem Raza, Army Chief Gen Qamar Bajwa and civilian leaders during his stay in Islamabad.
• The top Iranian commander is also likely to visit Karachi during his trip.
• The diplomat expressed the hope that the visit would lead to expansion of bilateral defence ties.
3. PIA awarded highest level certification
• Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has achieved the International Air Transport Association (IATA`s) new distribution capability (NDC) level-4 certification.
• The certification is of the highest level, awarded to PIA.
• A press release issued by PIA on October 11, 2021 stated that the national flag carrier recently embarked upon a Digital Transformation Programme, under which it is focusing on modernising its business practices, resource competence, technology upgrade and partner collaborations in line with new industry standards and practices.
4. Gilgit-Baltistan, Azad Kashmir to have 4G internet services
• The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) in agreement with Zong, Telenor Pakistan and Ufone granted additional spectrum for Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK).
• All three telecommunication service providers are successful bidders in the first ever auction of additional spectrum for GB and AJK.
• Representatives of all three mobile companies have demanded of the PTA and the Ministry of Information and Technology to ensure that the required backend facilities are provided in the region for fast and reliable 4G internet service
5. First NLC trucks reach Istanbul, Baku under TIR
• The National Logistics Cell (NLC) has revived two international road corridors after it successfully completed the first-ever one-side commercial run by transporting high value products from Pakistan to Turkey and Azerbaijan under the Transports Internationaux Routiers (TIR) convention.
• `Our trucks carrying containers loaded with goods reached Istanbul and Balcu via Tehran on Oct 7 night under the TIR admission. The vehicles had moved from Karachi on Sept 27 and completed the journey of over 5,000 kilometres within 10 days,` said an NLC official spokesman
6. Three win Nobel Economics Prize for research on jobs, migration
• Three US-based academics won the Nobel Economics Prize for research on the labour market using `natural experiments`, or observational studies, that have revolutionised empirical research in the field, the jury said.
• Canadian-American David Card, Israeli-American Joshua Angrist and Dutch-American Guido Imbens shared the prize for providing `new insights about the labour market` and showing `what conclusions about cause and effect can be drawn from natural experiments,` the Nobel committee said in a statement
7. China-India talks to defuse border tensions stall
• Talks between Indian and Chinese army commanders to disengage troops from key friction areas along their border have ended in a stalemate and failed to ease a 17-month standoff that has sometimes led to deadly clashes.
• The continuing standoff means the two nations will keep troops in the forward areas of Ladakh for a second consecutive winter in dangerously freezing temperatures.
8. UN chief slams Taliban for `breaking` promises made to women
• UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres slammed the Taliban for `breaking` promises to Afghan women and girls, and urged the world to donate more money to Afghanistan to head off its economic collapse.
• The comments came on the heels of the first face-to-face talks between the United States and the Taliban since the Islamists took control of the country, at which the issue of women`s rights was raised, according to the State Department.
• `I am particularly alarmed to see promises made to Afghan women and girls by the Taliban being broken,` Guterres told reporters
9. Talks with Taliban candid and professional, says US
• The United States said that the weekend talks with the Taliban were candid and professional.
• During the weekend, the Biden administration held their first face-to-face meeting with the Taliban in Doha since the withdrawal of US troops from Afghanist an in late August.
• On Monday, a State Department official told journalists in Washington that on Oct 9 and 10, an interagency US delegation travelled to the Qatari capital to meet senior Taliban representatives
10. Germany unveils first self-driving train
• German rail operator Deutsche Bahn and industrial group Siemens unveiled the world’s first automated, driverless train in the city of Hamburg, billing it as more punctual and energy efficient than traditional trains.
• Four such trains will join the northern city’s S-Bahn rapid urban rail network and start carrying passengers from December, using the existing rail infrastructure.
