1. Pakistan keen to work on gas project, PM assures Putin
• Prime Minister Imran Khan on January 17, 2022 reassured Russian President Vladimir Putin of Pakistan`s commitment to collaborate with Russia on the Pakistan Stream Gas Pipeline Project as the two leaders discussed the expansion of bilateral economic and energy cooperation.
• PM Khan and President Putin spoke by phone about the progress in relations between the two countries, regional situation, Islamophobia and justification of blasphemy by some of the western countries as freedom of expression.
• Coincidentally, the conversation happened as India began installing the first of the Russia-supplied S-400 `Triumf` surface-to-air missile systems on its borders with Pakistan. India plans to deploy five S-400 regiments
2. Bandial formally named country`s next top judge
• President Arif Alvi on January 17, 2022 formally appointed Justice Umar Ata Bandial, the senior puisne judge of the Supreme Court, as the country`s next chief judge.
• Justice Bandial will don the robes as the chief justice of Pakistan (CJP) on Feb 2, 2022 after incumbent CJP Gulzar Ahmed leaves on Feb 1, after two years and 42 days in office. He was appointed to the highest judicial office in the land on Dec 21, 2019.
• `In exercise of the powers conferred by Article 175(3) read with Article 177 of the Constitution, the president of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan is pleased to appoint Mr Justice Umar Ata Bandial, the most senior judge of the Supreme Court, as chief justice of Pakistan with effect [from] Feb 2, 2022,` says the notification issuedonJan17,2022bythe Ministry of Law and Justice
3. Pakistani among three killed in UAE truck blast
• Three people, including a Pakistani national, were killed as three fuel trucks exploded and a fire broke out near Abu Dhabi airport on Monday in what Yemen`s Houthis claimed was an attack deep inside the United Arab Emirates.
• The Iran-backed Houthi movement, which is battling a Saudi-led coalition that includes the UAE, has frequently launched cross-border missile and drone attacks on Saudi Arabia, but has claimed few such attacks on the UAE, mostly denied by Emirati authorities.
• Three people were killed and six wounded when the three fuel tanker trucks exploded in the industrial Musaffah area near storage facilities of oil firm ADNOC, state news agency WAM said. It said those killed were two Indians and a Pakistani
4. Construction of 121 apartment buildings allowed
• In a bid to promote vertical and discourage horizontal growth and keeping in view the growing residential, commercial and industrial need in Lahore, the government has allowed construction of 121 apartment buildings at various locations of the city.
• The construction plans/designs have been approved by the town planning wing of the Lahore Development Authority (LDA), Dawn haslearnt.
• `The building plans of 121 apartment buildings were approved during a period of nine months from March to December 31, last year. Dozens of more such plans are currently under consideration these days,` an official source told Dawn on January 17, 2022.
5. 150 lawmakers lose membership for not filing asset details
• The membership of 150 legislators from across the country, including some cabinet members and veteran politicians, has been suspended by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) for not filing their statements of assets.
• The ECP on January 17, 2021 released a list of MNAs, senators and MPAs of the four provincial assemblies who failed to file their statements of assets and liabilities, as well as those of their spouses and dependents, for the fiscal year that ended on June 30, 2021. These statements have to be filed every year by Dec 31.
• In the 100-member Senate, the membership of three lawmakers has been suspended, including Dr Musadik Malik, Dr Sikandar Mandhro and Prince Ahmed Umer Ahmedzai.
6. Bill seeking to end bureaucrats` judicial power tabled in Senate
• A bill seeking a separation between the judiciary and the executive branch of the government and clipping judicial powers being enjoyed by certain bureaucrats in Islamabad was tabled in the Senate on January 17, 2022.
• The bill presented by Senator Irfanul Haq Siddiqui and titled `Code of Criminal Procedure (Amendment) Act 2021` seeks various amendments to the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) 1898. It has been referred to Senate`s standing committee concerned for further deliberation.
• In his speech while presenting the bill, Mr Siddiqui said giving judicial powers to government officers violated the Constitution and was tantamount to contempt of the judiciary
7. Hindu monk jailed after calling for `genocide` of Muslims
• Indian authorities have charged a Hindu monk with inciting religious violence after he called for the genocide of India`s Muslims at a meeting of rightwing supporters, police said on January 17, 2022.
• Senior police officer Swatantra Kumar said Yati Narsinghanand Giri, an outspoken supporter of far-right nationalists who also heads a Hindu monastery, was initially arrested on Saturday on allegations that he made derogatory remarks against women. He appeared the following day in a court in the town of Haridwar, where he was sent into 14 days of custody for hate speech against Muslims and calling for violence against them.
• Kumar said the monk Giri, whom he described as a repeat offender, was formally charged on Monday with promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion.` The charge can carry a jail term of five years
8. Distress signal prompts UN concern after Tonga volcanic eruption
• A distress signal has been detected in an isolated, low-lying group of islands in the Tonga archipelago following Saturday`s massive volcanic eruption and tsunami, the United Nations said, prompting particular concern for its inhabitants.
• Initial reports suggested no mass casualties on the main island of Togatapu, but two people were reported missing and the capital Nuku`alof a was badly damaged, as were resorts and homes along the island`s western beaches, it said.
• `Further volcanic activity cannot be ruled out,` the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said in the update on Monday, reporting only minor injuries but emphasising that formal assessments, especially of the outer islands, had yet to be released with communications badly hit
9. Indonesian officials made `rare visit` to Israel
• A delegation of Indonesian officials made a rare visit to Israel recently to discuss coronavirus strategies, despite the countries not having diplomatic relations, Israel`s Army Radio reported on January 17, 2022.
• The Indonesian health officials aimed to learn how to deal with the coronavirus pandemic and met with Israeli officials, the report said. The report did not specify when the visit took place.
• Israel`s foreign ministry would not confirm the report, but said that Isr ael believes in `international cooperation in every regard to the fight against the coronavirus` and is prepared to share information and experience.
• Israel and Indonesia do not have diplomatic relations, but for years there have been back-channel over-tures to establish official ties.
10. Veteran actor Rasheed Naz dies at 73
• Senior film, TV and stage actor Rasheed Naz breathed his last at an Islamabad hospital at 73, family sources confirmed here on January 17, 2022.
• Born on Sept 9, 1948 in Peshawar, Rasheed Naz had developed a taste for acting in movies. He had launched his acting career in 1971 from a Pashto play telecast by PTV Peshawar centre. Over 250 TV and stage plays and movies are to his credit.
