1. Anti-army trends draw attention of top brass
• Military commanders on April 12, 2022 took notice of the smear campaign against the Army on the social media and endorsed the position taken by the top brass on the political crisis in the country that climaxed with ex-premier Imran Khan`s ouster.
• In a statement on the 79th Formation Commanders` Conference, a semi-annual event at the General Headquarters where the field commanders deliberate on operational and training matters, the Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR) said: `The forum expressed complete confidence in leadership`s well considered stance to uphold the constitution and rule of law, at all cost.
• The statement comes in the backdrop of the installation of Shehbaz Sharif as the new prime minister after his predecessor Imran Khan lost no-trust vote in the National Assembly. Mr Khan alleged that the opposition`s successful move to dislodge his government was inspired by a conspiracy hatched by the United States
2. New PM sends positive signals to China, US
• Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on April 12, 2022 reiterated the need for cooperation with the United States and India, while assuring Beijing of further deepening of relations. `The new government wishes to constructively and positively engage with the US to promote shared goals of peace, security and development in the region,` the Prime Minister`s Office said in response to a White House statement on Mr Sharif taking over as the new prime minister.
• White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki had earlier said that a democratic Pakistan was critical to US interests.
• Ties between Islamabad and Washington touched a new low after former prime minister Imran Khan accused the US of conspiring to dislodge his government. He based his allegation on a diplomatic cable in which it was report-edly said that a State Department official had warned of consequences for bilateral ties if the no-confidence motion f ailed.
3. `Workhorse` PM cuts weekend in half
• It was a busy day for freshly-minted Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif who assumed charge of his office on April 12, 2022 with a whirlwind schedule; beginning consultations with the leaders of various political parties for the formation of the federal cabinet, abolishing the two-day weekend and revising the country`s official work timings for Ramazan.
• After receiving the customary guard of honour early in the morning, Shehbaz Sharif arrived at the PM Office and assumed charge around 8am much earlier than Ramazan working hours, which start at 10amsaying that he did not want to waste any time in serving the masses.
• During an early morning interaction where he was introduced to the officials and staff of PM House, the new premier directed them to get ready to deliver robust performance
4. Major, sepoy martyred, two terrorists killed in South Waziristan
• An army major and a soldier were martyred and two terrorists were killed during an exchange of fire between members of security forces and a group of terrorists in the Birmal area of South Waziristan tribal district on April 12, 2022 night.
• Officials told the media in Wana that two soldiers were wounded in the clash.
• In a statement, the military`s media wing ISPR said two terrorists were killed in the exchange of fire between security forces and terrorists in the Angoor Adda area.
• Weapons and ammunition were recovered from the insurgents, who had been actively involved in terrorist activities against members of security forces
5. No-trust motion moved against AJK prime minister
• In a dramatic move, as many as 25 out of 32 lawmakers of ruling Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) on April 12, 2022 moved a resolution for a vote of no-confidence against Prime Minister Sardar Abdul Qayyum Niazi for his `failure to implement party`s manifesto and ensure good governance` apart from other alleged shortcomings.
• `The prime minister has lost the confidence of the [PTI] parliamentary party for not implementing party`s manifesto, [resorting to] bad governance, nepotism and violation of merit, and not highlighting the Kashmir issue,` read the shoddily drafted hand-written resolution, which named PTI`s regional president Sardar Tanveer Ilyas as his successor to meet a constitutional requirement
