1. IMF agrees to add $2bn to ongoing programme
• The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has agreed to increase the size of its $6 billion loan programme by $2bn and extend it for another year to prop up Pakistan`s balance of payments position and foreign exchange reserves.
• Finance Minister Miftah Ismail said on April 24, 2022 that Pakistan had asked the IMF to enhance its bailout package from the remaining $3bn to $5bn.
• Addressing a news conference at the Pakistan Embassy in Washington, the minister said that the IMF will send a staff-level delegation to Pakistan for talks on this request.
• Technical talks on Pakistan`s proposal are expected to begin from Tuesday
2. Modi`s visit to held Kashmir sparks protests
• As Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in occupied Jammu and Kashmir on his first visit since the limited autonomy of the disputed territory was nullified in August 2019, Kashmiris on Sunday expressed their wrath and indignation at the coming of their `tormentor` by staging anti-India and pro-freedom rallies in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) and elsewhere in Pakistan and abroad.
• The call for anti-India demonstrations was jointly given by AJK Prime Minister Sardar Tanveer Ilyas and the AJK chapter of All Parties Hurriyat Conference (APHC).
• In the federal capital, PM Ilyas and APHC convener Farooq Rehmani were among the leaders and activists from both sides of the divide in Kashmir who lined up outside the Indian High Commission to condemn Mr Modi`s visit
3. Pakistan trashes Indian propaganda over Kartarpur Corridor
• Pakistan has rejected the `malicious Indian propaganda` that it is allegedly using the Kartarpur Corridor for business meetings, the Foreign Office said on April 24, 2022.
• `It`s obvious that this concoction is part of India`s deliberate smear campaign seeking to undermine Pakistan`s historic initiative of opening the Kartarpur Sahib Corridor for Sikh pilgrims from India and around the world,` the Foreign Office said in a statement.
• The response from the Foreign Office comes in the wake of reports carried by certain sections of the Indian media that Pakistan`s officials were `using the Kartarpur corridor to meet and cultivate contacts among Indians going on the pilgrimage`
4. Pakistan, Iraq to sign deals on cooperation in various sectors
• Ambassador of Iraq Hamid Abbas Lafta has said that Pakistan and Iraq will sign agreements on cooperation in various sectors, including trade promotion and tariff rationalisation, to enhance bilateral economic and trade ties.
• Pakistan and Iraq will sign 10 agreements to promote such cooperation in coming June, which will mark the beginning of a new era in enhancing bilateral relations, the ambassador told APP on Sunday.
• These agreements would be signed on tax and tariff exemptions, economic and trade cooperation, coordination against human trafficking and other crimes, besieds air connectivity, he said
5. KP govt to establish first-ever education city in South Waziristan
• The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has planned to establish education city in militancy-stricken South Waziristan tribal district.
• It will be the first-ever such initiative of its kind in the province. The `South Waziristan Education City` will comprise schools, colleges and sub-campuses of different universities established in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and other parts of the country.
• The education city will be established in Barwand, situated in the Mehsud dominated area of the tribal district. South Waziristan remained a hub of terrorism during the previous two decades. Education institutions in the Mehsud area were badly affected where militant groups had either destroyed schools or converted them into their hideouts
