1. TTP refuses to budge from demand for Fata merger reversal
• The proscribed Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) has categorically stated that the insurgent group would not back down from its demand for the reversal of the merger of erstwhile Fata with the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.
• `Our demands are clear and especially the reversal of Fata merger with KP is our primary demand which the group cannot back down from,` said Mufti Noor Wali Mehsud, chief of the outlawed group during an interview with a YouTuber. The interview, which was made available on YouTube on Wednesday, has been apparently conducted somewhere in Kabul.
• Federal Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah had recently ruled out the reversal of Fata merger with KP which was done through a constitutional amendment in 2018
2. FO rejects Indian insinuations over Udaipur killing
• A police constable was critically injured in a clash which broke out on June 29, 2022 between cops and protesters in Bhim town of Rajasthan`s Rajsamand district following protests over the recent killing of a Hindu tailor, allegedly by two Muslim men.
• Meanwhile, Pakistan`s Foreign Office `categorically rejected` Indian insinuations linking a Pakistani organisation to the suspects involved in the alleged murder of Kanhaiya Lal in Udaipur.
• Reports said that Constable Sandeep Chaudhary was in critical condition while police personnel have been stationed at the hospital in large numbers. To disperse the crowd of protesters, the police had fired more than 10 rounds in the air.
• Several people were also injured in the subsequent baton charge. The situation in Bhim remains tense and heavy deployment of police teams has been carried out to ensure there are no further altercations
3. Balochistan budget passed without objections
• The Balochistan Assembly has passed a Rs598 billion budget for the next fiscal year without facing any objection from either side of the aisle.
• The session, which started one hour and 45 minutes behind schedule, was presided over by Deputy Speaker Sardar Babar Khan Musakhail.
• Balochistan Finance Minister Sardar Abdul Rehman Khetran presented 102 demands for the draft in the house one by one. Of all, 60 demands for the draft of over Rs351.2bn belonged to non-development expenditure, while 42 demands for the draft of over Rs246.9bn were for the development programme
4. Top Chinese diplomat promises to help reinvigorate ties
• High-ranking Chinese politician Yang Jiechi on June 29, 2022 pledged to help in reinvigorating ties with longstanding ally Pakistan as he opened his two-day trip to Islamabad with a meeting with Army Chief Gen Qamar Bajwa.
• `He assured to play his role for further improvement in diplomatic cooperation with Pakistan at all levels,` the ISPR said after Mr Yang met Gen Bajwa at the General Headquarters.
• Mr Yang, who is considered a personal representative of President Xi Jinping because of his position in Chinese hierarchy, is leading a high-level delegation comprising vice ministers for foreign affairs and commerce, vice chairman of China International Development Cooperation Agency (CIDCA), and deputy secretary general of the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) on the visit that is taking place at a crucial juncture in bilateral ties
5. Climate change to cost Islamabad $26bn annually, says UN report
• Economic costs from the combined impacts of the disaster-climate-health nexus estimated by the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UN-ESCAP) show that Pakistan will have the highest losses as percentage of GDP at 9.1 per cent.
• In South and Southwest Asia, the total average annual loss is estimated to be $161 billion in the current climate condition. This estimate increases to $217bn under the moderate climate change scenario and to $322bn under the worst-case climate change scenario, says UN-ESCAP report, `Pathways to Adaptation and Resilience in South and Southwest Asia` released this week.
• In absolute terms, under the worst-case scenario, India is set to record the highest average annual loss at $225bn, followed by Pakistan at $26bn and Turkey at $24bn. However, when average annual loss is assessed as a percentage of the country`s GDP, under the worst-case climate change scenario, Pakistan will have the highest losses as percentage of GDP at 9.1pc, followed by Nepal at 8.7pc and India with estimated losses equaling 8.1pc of its GDP
