1. Guterres advocates new repayment model for Pakistan
• United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on September 10, 2022 urged global financial institutions to create a new mechanism for countries like Pakistan to enable investment in climate resilience and sustainable infrastructure, instead of getting mired in debt repayment.
• Mr Guterres, who visited flood-hit areas in Sindh and Balochistan on Saturday, called the devastation he witnessed `climate carnage` as he appealed for a `massive and global response` to deal with climate change.
• Addressing the media at Jinnah Terminal as he concluded his visit, Mr Guterres said he had been very clear in his demand for `debt relief for developing and middle income countries like Pakistan that are on the verge of an extremely difficult financial situation. `In some cases, we are already seeing that defaults are coming… I am strongly advocating for what we can call debt swaps,` he said, adding that it will allow the countries to invest in climate resilience and sustainable infrastructure, instead of paying the debt.
2. GB governor refuses to sign Revenue Authority Bill
• The Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) Governor Syed Mehdi Shah on September 10, 2022 refused to sign Revenue Authority Bill 2022 and returned it to the assembly for review. According to a press release issued by spokesperson, GB Governor Syed Mehdi has returned the bill to the Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly for deletion and amendment of the clause of bill related to alcohol and other drugs as they are against Islamic values and social customs. On August 2, Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly passed the bill titled `Gilgit-Baltistan Revenue Authority Bill 2022`, with four opposition members also voting in favour of the bill.
• According to the bill, section 2 clause I dennes excise duty on alcohol liquor, opium and other narcotics. Opposition parties had protested against the bill claiming that legislation related to alcohol and other drugs is against Islamic values and demanded to return or amend the controversial clause of the bill
3. Shehbaz due in New York for UNGA on 19th
• Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif, along with four members of his cabinet and other senior officials, is expected in New York on September 19 to attend the 77th session of the UN General Assembly.
• The prime minister is scheduled to address the General Assembly on September 23 and is expected to return to Pakistan the same evening.
• Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Hina Rabbani Khar, Defence Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif and Federal Minister for Broadcasting and Information Maryam Aurangzeb will accompany the prime minister.
• The delegation will also include the foreign secretary and other senior officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and other departments
4. Cholera kits arrive as WHO airlifts medical supplies
• Two shipments from the UN carrying emergency medical supplies and relief equipment for flood victims arrived at Karachi`s Jinnah International Airport on September 10, 2022.
• The shipments contained 15.6 tonnes of cholera kits, water and multipurpose tents that can be used as medical tents, a press release issued by the WHO said.
• The supplies were delivered to Pakistan with the support of the Dubai government and International Humanitarian City (IHC).
5. US Supreme Court to reopen to public after long Covid closure
• The US Supreme Court will allow the public to hear arguments in person for the first time in about 2-1/2 years following a closure due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Chief Justice John Roberts said, according to media reports.
• The court`s nine justices all of whom have been vaccinated against Covid-19 will begin hearing a new round of cases when the court`s next term kicks off on Oct 3.
• Roberts announced the public reopening while speaking at the 10th Circuit Bench and Bar Conference in Colorado Springs, CNN and local media outlet Colorado Politics reported. Court spokespeople did not immediately respond to requests for comment
