1. NSC to hear from agencies on audio leak fiasco
• With more audio clips of conversations supposedly taking place in the Prime Minister Office (PMO) surfacing online on September 26, 2022 and raising alarms over the cyber security of the PMO, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has called a meeting of the National Security Committee (NSC) this week to ascertain how informal conversations in the country`s highest office were leaked.
• It has also been learnt that a joint investigation team (JIT) has been constituted to probe the massive security lapse, and that top intelligence agencies have completed an initial inquiry, the report of which would be placed before the premier in the NSC meeting by their high-ups.
• On the other hand, Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah raised a few eyebrows when he attempted to downplay the possibility of hacking, calling it a `storm in a teacup`. He suggested there was nothing to be concerned about if it was mere `hacking of mobile phones`. He, however, did call it a serious security breach if anyone had bugged the PM House
2. US to give $10m for food security assistance, says Blinken
• US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said on September 26, 2022 he was pleased to announce another $10 million for food security assistance, adding he was sending a simple message that `we are here for Pakistan just like we have been in the past`.
• Secretary Blinken said this during a meeting with Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari where they had a `good and engaging and extensive conversation` on a host of issues.
• At the meeting, Mr Blinken also talked about managing a responsible relationship with India. He said: `Our colleagues also spoke about China and we also critically talked about deepening our relations
3. Two soldiers martyred, terrorist killed in attack: ISPR
• Two soldiers were martyred when terrorists opened fire at a check post in the Azam Warsak area of South Waziristan tribal district on September 26, 2022, the military said.
• During intense firing 29-year-old Naik Rasheed, a resident of Tank district, and 22-year-old soldier Rasool Badshah, who belonged to Lower Dir, fought gallantly before embracing shahadat, said an Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) statement.
• According to the ISPR, security personnel initiate d a prompt response and effectively engaged the terrorists` location. As a result, one terrorist was killed and weapons and ammunition were recovered from his possession. The killed terrorist remained actively involved in terrorist activities against security forces and killing of innocent citizens, it added
4. Six servicemen martyred in Harnai chopper crash
• Six army personnel, including two pilots, embraced martyrdom in the Khost area of Harnai district on Sunday night when a military helicopter crashed during a mission, bringing back memories of last month`s tragedy that had struck during flood relief operations in Balochistan.
• The martyred officials are Major Khurram Shahzad, Major Mohammad Muneeb Afzal, Subedar Abdul Wahid, Naik Jalil, Sepoy Mohammad Imran and Sepoy Shoaib. Senior military and civil officers offered their funeral prayers at Quetta Garrison on Monday before the coffins of the shuhada were dispatched to their native towns, where they will be buried with full military honours, according to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR)
5. Governor returns LG bill to PA
• Governor Balighur Rehman has sent back the Local Government Bill 2021 to the Punjab Assembly with certain reservations.
• The governor said that the Elections Act 2017 did not mention the procedure of electronic voting. `The word Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) and i-voting should be deleted from the bill. If section 187 of the Local Government Bill is implemented in its original form, it will discourage senior officers,` he said, adding this would not only affect the seniority list but also open the way to promote out-of-turn favourite officers.
• Mr Rehman further noted that the proposed Local Government Bill recognized the urban-rural divide to some extent but only partially. He said the bill lacked adequate representation in remote rural areas and small to medium growing cities
