1. Floodwaters in Sindh recede, food insecurity on the rise
• With floodwater levels in 18 out of 22 districts of Sindh receding 34 per cent and in some districts up to 78pc, a latest UN report says that the situation is expected to exacerbate food insecurity in the flood-hit provinces.
• Besides, increasing cases of waterborne and vector-borne diseases are a major concern, particularly in the most affected areas of Sindh, Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
• The UN`s Of fice for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in its report, issued on Saturday, saidthat normal conditions had started to prevail in most dis trict s of Balochistan and temperatures started to decrease.
• Overall water levels are receding in the upper areas of Taluka Qubo Saeed Khan, Shahdadkot, Qambar, Warah and Nasirabad, while Indus River is flowing normally at Guddu, Sukkur and Kotri barrages
2. CM opens Rs100bn Ehsaas Ration Programme
• Chief Minister Parvez Elahi opened the Punjab Ehsaas Ration Programme worth Rs100 billion here on October 2, 2022.
• Chairperson of Punjab Ehsaas Programme Senator Dr Sania Nishtar, former federal minister Moonis Elahi, and Chief Minister`s Adviser on Information Omar Sarfaraz Cheema also accompanied Mr Elahi, who began the scheme at a general store in Shadman market.
• The chief minister was given a briefing about the programme by Dr Nishtar. Talking to the media later, Mr Elahi said that the government has launched the programme with a substantial amount of Rs100 billion for eight million families of the province. He said that funding for the scheme maybe increased if needed.
3. CM okays Shangla Development Authority
• Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Mehmood Khan has approved the establishment of Shangla Development Authority to remove backwardness in the district through uplifting its tourism sector.
• The decision was taken during a meeting between Mahmood Khan and minister for labour and parliamentary affairs Shaukat Yousafzai, said an official statement issued on October 2, 2022.
• Mahmood Khan said Shangla was a beautiful place, but the past governments failed to tap its tourism potential. He said due to lack of employment opportunities, 70 per cent of the local youth were forced to work in coal mines across the country
4. Germany builds gas terminals to replace Russian pipelines
• Germany`s most strategically important building site is at the end of a windswept pier on the North Sea coast, where workers are assembling the country`s first terminal for the import of liquefied natural gas (LNG).
• Starting this winter, the rig, close to the port of Wilhelmshaven, will be able to supply the equivalent of 20 percent of the gas that was until recently imported from Russia.
• Since its invasion of Ukraine, Moscow has throttled gas supplies to Germany, while the Nord Stream pipelines which carried huge volumes under the Baltic Sea to Europe were damaged last week in what a Danish-Swedish report called `a deliberate act.` In the search for alternative sources, the German government has splashed billions on five projects like the one in Wilhelmshaven
5. New Zealand welcomes back indigenous remains from Austria
• New Zealand on October 2, 2022 welcomed back the remains of around 64 indigenous New Zealanders that were stolen in the 19th century and sent back by Austria after more than 70 years of negotiations.
• In a ceremony at the country`s national museum, Te Papa, a few hundred people gathered to witness a procession as the remains were carried in white boxes and placed on a stage and covered with straw blankets and fur.
• Indigenous men and women, sitting around the boxes, spoke and sang in Maori to mark the return of the remains
