1. UN human rights body to review Pakistan`s record in Geneva today
• As the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) Working Group of the United Nations Human Rights Council takes up Pakistan`s human rights record at its meeting in Geneva on Monday (January 30, 2023), a few countries, including the United States, have raised specific questions in respect of human rights issues in the country.
• Pakistan is one of the countries which will be reviewed by the working group during the session that will continue till Feb 3. Pakistan`s first, second and third UPR reviews took place in May 2008, October 2012 and November 2017, respectively. Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Hina Rabbani Khar will represent the country at the meeting.
• The US made inquiries about equitable participation of members of ethnic and religious monitory communities, including women, in society and democratic process
2. By-polls on 86 NA seats in March: ECP official
• The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) would hold by-elections on 86 National Assembly seats in March, likely to be followed by by-polls on more constituencies in April, an official said on January 29, 2023.
• However, the schedule for the seven seats won by PTI chief Imran Khan could only be issued after he decides which of them he wants to retain, an ECP official told Dawn.
• He explained that under the law, Mr Khan whose victory on seven National Assembly seats that he won in October had been notified on Jan 19 had a month to decide which seat to retain
3. Bilawal lands in Moscow on two-day official visit
• Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari arrived in Moscow on January 29, 2023 on a two-day official visit.
• The foreign minister and Commerce Minister Syed Naveed Qamar are also expected in Washington soon as part of Pakistan`s effort to re-engage with the US.
• Upon his arrival in Moscow, Mr Bhutto-Zardari was received by senior officials of the Russian foreign ministry, Pakistan`s Ambassador to Russia Shafqat Ali Khan and other embassy officials.
• According to the Foreign Office, Mr Bhutto-Zardari is visiting the Russian Federation at the invitation of his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov

4. China resumes issuing visas for Japanese citizens
• The Chinese embassy in Tokyo announced on January 29, 2023 that it would resume issuing visas to Japanese citizens.
• The move ends a retaliatory step against Japan`s decision to require Covid testing for travellers arriving from mainland China, where the number of infections was surging. `Starting today, the Embassy and the Offices of Consulates-General of the People`s Republic of China will resume issuing ordinary visas for Japanese citizens,` a short online notice issued by the embassy said without elaborating.
• China stopped issuing visas to Japanese nationals from January 10 after Tokyo started requiring people arriving from the mainland to test before travel and upon landing. China also suspended issuing visas to South Koreans for similar reasons earlier this month
5. UK PM fires Tory party`s chairman after tax probe
• British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak on January 29, 2023 fired Conservative party chairman Nadhim Zahawi after an inquiry into Mr Zahawi`s tax affairs found a `serious breach` of ministerial rules, the government said.
• `As a result, I have informed you of my decision to remove you from your position in His Majesty`s Government,` Mr Sunak wrote in a publicly released letter to his Iraqi born ally, following a scandal that cast doubt on the premier`s own judgement and vows of integrity.
• The government also released the inquiry report by Mr Sunak`s newly appointed independent ethics advisor, Laurie Magnus
