1. G20 meet begins in held Kashmir amid boycott
• In sheer violation of international laws and United Nations Security Council resolutions, a G20 meeting got under way in India-held Kashmir on May 22, 2023 with at least three member countries boycotting it while several western states preferring to send their India-based diplomats instead of allowing delegates from their respective capitals to the event in the disputed region.
• G20 member China, which is locked in a military standoff with India along their mostly undemarcated border in the Ladakh region, refused to attend the tourism working group meeting, and no government delegations are expected from Turkiye or Saudi Arabia.
• Beijing also stayed away from earlier G20 meetings in Ladakh and in Arunachal Pradesh, which it says are part of Tibet.
• Last week, the UN special rapporteur on minority issues, Fernand de Varennes, said New Delhi was seeking to use the G20 meeting to `portray an international seal of approval` on a situation that `should be decried and condemned`. India rejected the rapporteur`s comments and Pakistan denounced Indian `arrogance` for violating international law by holding the huddle in the disputed territory where, according to the UN resolutions, a plebiscite must be held giving the Kashmiri people the right to self-determination
2. COAS deplores attacks, declares May 25 as martyrs` day
• The army will observe a `Martyrs` Respect Day` on May 25 (Thursday), Chief of Army Staff Gen Syed Asim Munir said at the General Headquarters, Rawalpindi, on May 22, 2023 during a ceremony held to remember the martyrs.
• The COAS deplored the May 9 attacks on army installations, monuments and desecration of memorials to martyrs, describing them as intolerable.
• He decorated officers and Jawans with gallantry awards for their courage and valour during operations, according to the Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR).
• A total of 51 heirs of martyrs received Sitara-i-Imtiaz(Military) while 22 officers and Jawans were awarded Tamgha-i-Basalat.Two officers were awarded the United Nations Special Medal
3. Two girls` schools blown up in North Waziristan
• Two government schools for girls in Mirali were blown up late Sunday night, police said.
• No loss of life was reported in the incidents.
• According to police, Government Girls Middle School, Noor Jannat, and Government Girls Middle School, Yunus Kot, were targeted by the attackers around midnight.
• Locals said around 500 girls were enrolled in the two schools.
• District Police Officer, North Waziristan, Saleem Riaz said it was a militant attack and the counterterrorism department of police would investigate the case. He vowed that all those involved in the attack would be brought to justice
4. Karachi to have air taxi service next month
• A private company plans to introduce the country`s first air taxi service in Karachi next month, the firm`s chief executive officer (CEO) said after signing an agreement with a foreign investor on Sunday.
• According to Imran Aslam, the CEO of Sky Wings, people will be able tobook the taxi through a mobile app. `The fare for the air taxi will be much below than what is charged by operators of chartered planes, Mr Aslam said.
• Chartered services charge at least Rs 2.5 million to fly passengers from Karachi to other cities in Sindh and Balochistan, he added.
• Sky Wings would initially use eight aircraft of different seating capacities and more would be added later, the CEO said.
• He expressed the hope that the service would promote tourism in the country
5. CDA, PCB agree to set up international cricket stadium in Islamabad
• The Capital Development Authority (CDA) and a representative of Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on May 22, 2023, in principle, agreed on the construction ofa cricket stadium in Islamabad.
• Sources in the CDA said the PCB management committee member Shakil Shaikh visited the CDA headquarters and held a meeting with Chairman Noorul Amin Mengal. The sources said both sides in principle agreed on the construction of the cricket stadium near D-12 in the foothills of Margalls.
• The CDA chief told the PCB representative that the civic agency had earmarked 25 acres for the construction of the cricket stadium
