1. Agencies get sweeping powers to raid, detain
• The outgoing government on August 01 quietly got a bill to amend the century old secrets act approved by the National Assembly in a bid to grant blanket powers to intelligence agencies, which will be able to raid and detain any citizen, even under suspicion of them breaching the law.
• The bill seeking to amend the Official Secrets Act 1923 was tabled in the National Assembly by Parliamentary Affairs Minister Murtaza Javed Abbasi through a supplementary agenda on private members` day and it was passed on the same day
2. NA passes bill for formation of `self-sufficient` Gandhara authority
• The National Assembly on August 1, 2023 approved a bill for the establishment of the `Promotion and Protection of Gandhara Culture Authority Act 2023` to preserve and promote Buddhist sites and tourism.
• The proposed authority is the continuation of the `International Gandhara Symposium` recently organised by the government participated by key Buddhist religious figures from many countries
3. Senate aviation body okays two bills
• The Senate Standing Committee on Aviation has approved two bills to outsource the airports and improve investigation mechanism regarding aviation accidents.
• The bills titled Pakistan Civil Aviation Bill, 2023 and Pakistan Air Safety Investigation Bill, 2023 were presented by Federal Minister for Aviation Khawaja Saad Rafiq.
• The committee meeting, chaired by Senator Hidayatullah, reviewed the bills and approved them with amendments tabled by the members
4. Counter-terrorism approach should evolve in line with threat: US official
• As Pakistan grapples with an increase in militant attacks seemingly emanating from across the border, a top White House National Security official has called the threat `more ideologically diverse and geographically diffuse`, underscoring the need for keeping pace with the threat level.
• `More broadly, today`s terrorist threat is more ideologically diverse and geographically diffuse than that of two decades ago. Al-Qaeda, ISIS and associated forces have expanded from Afghanistan and the Middle East into Africa, the rest of South Asia, and Southeast Asia. As the threat evolves, so too must our counter-terrorism approach,` Senior Director for South Asia, National Security Council, Eileen Laubacher, told Dawn during her recent visit to Pakistan.
5. US assures Pakistan of unwavering economic support
• The United States said on Tuesday that it would continue its `unwavering support` to Pakistan`s efforts to overcome the economic crisis but also urged it to watch its interests carefully.
• Responding to a question about the Chinese vice premier`s visit to Islamabad for talks on the CPEC at a State Department news briefing, Spokesman Matthew Miller said: `I would say that first of all our support for Pakistan`s economic is unwavering and we will continue to engage with Pakistan about strengthening and our trade and investment ties
