1. Foreign Office downplays Taliban`s invitation to Fazl, denies talks with TTP
The Foreign Office on Thursday downplayed the Afghan Taliban administration`s invitation to Maulana Fazlur Rehman, leader of the Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam (JUI-F), in a bid to reduce tensions with Pakistan, characterising the gesture as a personal visit and emphasising lack of official knowledge about the initiative.
`That question may be best addressed to the Afghan authorities because we are not aware of any such initiative,` FO spokesperson Mumtaz Zahra Baloch said at the weekly media briefing while responding to aquestion about the invitation for the JUI-F chief
2. SBP reserves fall below $7bn in FY24
The State Bank of Pakistan`s (SBP) foreign exchange reserves fell below $7 billion for the first time in the current fiscal year, posing challenges for the government to stabilise the exchange rate and meet debt servicing obligations.
The SBP on Thursday reported a $136 million decline in reserves to $6.904bn due to debt repayments
3. Ex-GB CM disqualified
Former Gilgit-Baltistan chief minister Khalid Khurshid Khan received a lifetime ban from contesting in elections and heading the PTI`s regional chapter on Thursday. The decision from the GB`s election commission came in response to a petition filed by PTI worker Rehman Darelo.
Mr Khurshid, who served as the GB chief minister from November 2020 to July 2023, was disqualified by a three-judge bench of the Gilgit-Baltistan Chief Court in July.
4. Backed by `rival`, TTP free to attack Pakistan, UN told
Pakistan has formally told the UN Security Council that it has `clear evidence` that the outlawed Tehreeki-Taliban Pakistan (T TP) is supported by `our main adversary` and has been given free rein to conduct cross-border attacks against Pakistan`s border outposts and other installations.
This revelation, which came during a Wednesday afternoon debate on a UN report on Afghanistan, also saw Pakistan`s UN Ambassador Munir Akram defending the country`s decision to expel undocumented foreigners, particularly Afghan nationals
5. Exim Bank begins journey to foster exports, says Shamshad Akhtar
While launching the Exim Bank of Pakistan (EBP), Caretaker Finance Minister Dr Shamshad Akhtar on Thursday announced the export finance schemes (EFSs) would stand transferred to the new institution after being phased out from the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) because of legal compulsions.
The minister said EFSs were being phased out from the SBP under the reforms programme as part of the IMF programme and the management of those schemes would be separated from the SBP.
