1. IMF okays 6th review, ready to release $1bn tranche

• The International Monetary Fund (IMF) on February 2, 2022 approved the completion of the sixth review of its programme for Pakistan under the Extended Fund Facility (EFF).
• The completion of this review allows for an immediate disbursement of SDR 750 million (about $1 billion) to Pakistan, bringing total disbursements under the arrangement to SDR 2,144m (about $3bn) or 106 per cent of the country`s quota, said an announcement released in Washington where the meeting to review the programme was held.
• In Islamabad, Finance Minister Shaukat Tarin confirmed the approval in a tweet posted on his official account. `I am pleased to announce that the IMF Board has approved the 6th tranche of their program for Pakistan,` he wrote.


2. Justice Bandial sworn in to top judicial office

• Justice Umar Ata Bandial finally dons the robe as the 28th Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) as he was sworn in to the top judicial office on February 2, 2022 at a ceremony held at Aiwan-i-Sadr.
• President Arif Alvi administered the oath to Justice Bandial at the ceremony, which was also attended by Prime Minister Imran Khan, judges of the Supreme Court, Chief of the Army Staff General Qamar Javed Bajwa, Attorney General for Pakistan Khalid Jawed Khan, cabinet members including Minister for Information Fawad Chaudhry, Interior Minister Sheikh Rashid, Minister for Industry Khusro Bal(htiar, Senators Azam Nazir Tarar and Kamran Murtaza, governors, and president of the Supreme Court Bar Association Mohammad Ahsan Bhoon.


3. Centre grants `state guest` status to foreign cricketers

• The federal government has granted `state guest` status to foreign cricketers playing the Seventh Edition of Pakistan Super League T-20 matches from Feb 10 to 27 at Gaddafi Stadium.
• With the grant of the status, the Pakistan army, Rangers and police will provide foolproof security to the players on roads as well as in and around the stadium.
• For state guest movement, the Punjab government will now be required to offer `route zero` during the teams movement on roads and three security layers by the police, Rangers and the Pakistan army.


4. NA body defers capital`s LG bill for further amendments

• The National Assembly Standing Committee on Interior on February 2, 2022 deferred the Islamabad Capital Territory Local Government Bill 2021 for the next meeting as amendments to it are likely to be made by the committee.
• `We will make some amendments related to education sector of Islamabad. While, the upper age limit of representative of youth in local government will also be increased from 18-25 to 18-30,` chairman of the committee told Dawn after the meeting.
• Committee members, which met here at the National Database and Registration Authority (Nadra) building with MNA Raja Khurram Nawaz in the chair, besides various agenda items, discussed the said bill


5. Without structural reforms, CPEC won`t yield results, says ADB

• Pakistan can harness its strategic geopolitical potential, improve regional and international economic connectivity and become an economic hub for Asia if the $60 billion China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) is implemented successfully, but without structural reforms the country will not be able to achieve optimal benefits.
• This was stated by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) in a fresh report released on Wednesday. The study `Economic Corridor Development in Pakistan: Concept, Framework, and Case Studies` coincided with Prime Minister Imran Khan`s three-day visit to China along with a high-level delegation of cabinet members and government officials.

6. SBP revises time limit for export proceeds

• The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) has reversed its earlier decision to reduce the time period from 180 days to 120 days to bring exports proceeds into the country.
• In a circular issued on Jan 5, the SBP said that full export value of goods exported from Pakistan and declared to the Customs authorities should be received in an approved manner, on the due date for payment or within one hundred and twenty (120) days from the date of shipment, whichever is earlier.
• However, a circular issued on Feb1 by the SBP clarified that amendments introduced through the earlier FE circular shall not be applicable on such exports where irrevocable letters of credit with usance (time for payment of foreign bill) period up to 180 days were issued or established up to the date of issuance of above instructions


7. US deploys troops to support Nato in Ukraine standoff

• The United States said on February 2, 2022 it was deploying thousands of troops to bolster Nato forces in eastern Europe, ratcheting up its military response to fears that Russia could invade Ukraine.
• Russia has massed than 100,000 troops on Ukraine`s borders, and Western leaders have warned that any incursion into the ex-Soviet nation would be met with `severe consequences.` Pentagon spokesman John Kirby said 1,000 US troops in Germany would deploy to Romania, and 2,000 based in the United States would be sent to Germany and Poland


8. Israeli defence minister on first-ever visit to Bahrain

• Israeli Defence Minister Benny Gantz landed in Bahrain on February 2, 2022, the latest high-profile diplomatic trip since the countries normalised ties, the Gulf country said.
• `The defence minister, Lieutenant General Abdullah bin Hassan al-Nuaimi, received Mr Benny Gantz, the minister of defence of the State of Israel, upon his arrival at Bahrain International Airport,` the Bahraini Defence Ministry said.
• Gantz, who is the first Israeli defence minister to ever officially visit the Gulf country, travelled with several top military and security officials, including navy chief Admiral David Saar Salama


9. Fakhar and Zaman shine as Qalandars cruise to victory against Zalmi

• The contest was all but over when Lahore Qalandars pacer Zaman Khan got two in two almost halfway through the Peshawar Zalmi innings on February 2, 2022.
• With the asking rate climbing in their chase of 200 at the National Stadium, Zaman had left Zalmi reeling when he sent back Hussain Talat and Kamran Akmal on consecutive deliveries to leave them needing 133 in theirlast11overs.

• China and Britain claimed victories in the `Ice Cube`, where American swimmer Michael Phelps won eight gold medals at the 2008 Summer Olympics when it was known as the `Water Cube`, opening the action in the Games which will last until Feb 20 in front of crowds made sparse by Covid-19 curbs.
• Basketball great Yao Ming and a Chinese soldier wounded in a border clash with India earlier joined in a torch relay set to last just three days and only be viewed by selected members of the public before the Olympic cauldron is lit
