1. Cities with over 10pc positivity placed under strict curbs

• As the country reported more than 5,000 cases of Covid-19 for the second consecutive day and the number of critical patients surpassed 900 on January 19, 2022, the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC) announced a new set of restrictions for middle schools, public gatherings, wedding halls, restaurants and other sectors in cities having a positivity rate of over 10 per cent.
• In a session chaired by Minister for Planning, Development and Special Initiatives Asad Umar and co-chaired by National Coordinator Major General Muhammad Zafar Iqbal, the NCOC reviewed the Covid-19 situation and non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPIs) in the country.
• After deliberation and consultation with federating units, the forum agreed to implement the new NPIs, differentiating between cities with a Covid-19 positivity rate of up to 10pc and those above it


2. PM invokes Silicon Valley as model for startups

• Extolling the importance of startups and export-oriented small businesses to the country`s economic growth, Prime Minister Imran Khan said on January 19, 2022 he wanted to emulate the success of Silicon Valley and make Pakistan a hub for new businesses.
• Addressing the launch of the National Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) policy on Wednesday, Prime Minister Imran Khan vowed to take stern action against government departments and officials who created hurdles in the setting up of new startups and export-oriented businesses.
• Saying that fresh incentives would be extended to such businesses, which he claimed had been ignored in the past, the PM said: `We are giving SMEs bank credit facility, land for their businesses on lease and [are committed to J eradicating red tapism


3. Schools to ensure 50pc attendance up to sixth class

• All public and private schools in the city will conduct classes up to Grade-VI with 50 per cent students’ attendance every day in connection with Covid SoPs.
• “In all Public and Private Schools (in Lahore) classes up to Grade 6 will be staggered (50% students each day) starting Jan 20th through Jan 31, 2022. Classes 7 through 12 will remain on the previous schedule. Please follow COVID SOPs,” Punjab Education Minister Murad Raas said in a tweet on Wednesday.
• The second highest number (5,113) of Covid-19 cases was reported on Tuesday across the country since April 29 last year.
• According to the data released by the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC), 5,034 cases and 10 deaths were reported in the past 24 hours


4. Murree tragedy Pindi commissioner, CPO among 15 officials suspended

• The Punjab government identified `gross negligence, lack of coordination and team work as well as risk assessment` as the reasons leading to the deaths of stranded tourists in Murree on Jan 8, and suspended the entire chain of command, including the Rawalpindi division commissioner, for failing to prevent the tragedy.
• The lapses that led to the 23 deaths have been identified by a high-powered five-member committee, led by Additional Chief Secretary (Home) Zafar Nasrullah.
• A four-volume inquiry report as well as a shorter version was presented to the chief minister at his office on January 19, 2022 evening


5. Punjab proposes LG polls first phase on May 15

• The Punjab government has proposed that the Election Commission of Pakistan hold local government elections in two phases the first on May 15.
• Speaking to Dawn, Punjab Local Government minister Mahmood ur Rasheed said the Punjab government was now ready to hold the local government elections and conveyed its readiness to the ECP.
• Mr Rasheed said the second phase of the LG elections would be held within a month`s time.
• He said the delimitation process was ongoing and added that the ECP would notify the final lists of delimitations in Punjab on March 22. The PTI government dissolved the local governments created under the PLGA 2013 on May 4, 2019, as it was repealed upon the promulgation of the PLGA 2019


6. Parliamentary panel approves Justice Ayesha`s appointment to SC

• The Parliamentary Committee on appointment of judges on January 19, 2022 confirmed the nomination of Justice Ayesha Malik to the Supreme Court. This means that she only requires the president`s formal assent to become the first woman to be elevated to the country`s top court.
• However, the committee chaired by Senator Farooq H. Naek rejected the names of three lower court judges that were put forward by the Judicial Commission of Pakistan (JCP) for elevation to the Peshawar High Court (PHC).
• Justice Malik will remain a judge of the Supreme Court until March 2031 and may even have a chance to become the first woman to hold the post of chief justice


7. Israel demolishes Palestinian home in east Jerusalem

• Israeli police demolished the home of a Palestinian family and arrested at least 18 people as they carried out a controversial eviction order in the sensitive east Jerusalem neighbourhood of Sheikh Jarrah early on January 19, 2022.
• The looming eviction of other families from Sheikh Jarrah in May last year partly fuelled an 11-day war between Israel and armed Palestinian factions in Gaza.
• Before dawn, Israeli officers went to the home of the Salhiya family, who were first served with an eviction notice in 2017, after courts ruled the house had been built illegally. Jerusalem authorities have said the land will be used to build a school for children with special needs, but the eviction may raise tension in a neighbourhood that has become a symbol of Palestinian opposition to Israeli occupation


8. Russia asks Nato to forgo Ukraine`s inclusion

• Russia maintained a tough posture amid the tensions over its troop buildup near Ukraine, with a top diplomat warning on January 19, 2022 that Moscow will accept nothing less but watertight US guarantees precluding Nato`s expansion to Ukraine.
• Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov, who led the Russian delegation at the security talks with the US in Geneva last week, reaffirmed that Moscow has no intentions of invading Ukraine as the West fears, but said that receiving Western security guarantees is the categoric imperative for Moscow.
• The talks in Geneva and a related Nato-Russia meeting in Brussels last week were held as Russia has amassed an estimated 100,000 troops near Ukraine in what the West fears might herald an invasion


9. Iranian president meets Putin

• Russian President Vladimir Putin hosted his Iranian counterpart on January 19, 2022, hailing the two countries` cooperation on the crisis in Syria and other international issues.
• Greeting Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi at the start of their talks at the Kremlin, Putin noted that shared efforts by Moscow and Tehran have played a key role in helping the Syrian government overcome the threats posed by international terrorism.
• Russia and Iran have joined forces to shore up Syrian President Bashar Assad, helping his government reclaim most of the country`s territory after a devastating civil war


10. Babar named captain of ICC T20 Team of 2021

• Pakistan were the most dominant team in T20 international cricket last year and that was reflected in the International Cricket Council (ICC) team of the year for the shortest format, which was announced on January 19, 2022.
• Pakistan won 20 and lost just six matches during 2021, and were the overwhelming favourites at the T20 World Cup staged in the UAE, especially after their emphatic 10-wicket win over arch-rivals India in Dubai.
• However, Pakistan were stunned in the semi-final against Australia as Matthew Wade hit three successive sixes in the penultimate over of the match to seal victory that set the stage for a commanding win for Australia in the final against New Zealand.Still, it was a year to remember for Pakistan as their captain Babar Azam and wicket-keeper/batsman Mohammad Rizwan dominated the runs chart and fast bowler Shaheen Afridi mesmerised with the new ball.
• All three are part of the ICC T20 team of the year with right-handed batting sensation Babar picked as captain of the ICC team
