1. Attackers had links with handlers in Afghanistan, India: army

• Pakistan on February 3, 2022 blamed elements based in Afghanistan and India for attacks on two security forces` installations in Balochistan even as troops continue d an operation against terrorists holding out in the Panjgur district.
• At least 13 terrorists were killed and seven security personnel, including an officer, martyred during armed attacks on two security forces` camps in the Nushki and Panjgur districts, and subsequent security operations against the attackers, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR).
• In a statement regarding the attack, which was partly reported in Thursday`s paper, ISPR said that after successfully repulsing attacks on Wednesday night, security forces carried out clearance operations to hunt down the attackers hiding in the area, killing at least five terrorists


2. PM lands in Beijing on four-day official visit

• Prime Minister Imran Khan arrived here on February 3, 2022 on a four-day official visit during which he will join other world leaders attending the opening ceremony of the Beijing Winter Olympics scheduled to be held on Friday (today).
• Accompanied by a high level delegation, including federal cabinet members, the prime minister will also meet the Chinese leadership.
• Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi, Finance Minister Shaukat Tarin, Planning and Development Minister Asad Umar, Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry, National Security Adviser Dr Moeed Yusuf, Adviser on Commerce Abdul Razak Dawood and Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on China Pakistan Economic Corridor Khalid Mansoor are part of the delegation


3. Rupee posts biggest rise over dollar in a month

• The exchange rate got the much-needed boost on Thursday, as the rupee jumped 0.51 per cent against the US dollar after the International Monetary Fund (IMF) approved a $1 billion loan as part of a bailout package to Pakistan.
• The rupee rose 89 paise against the dollar in the inter-bank its biggest single-day gain since Dec 31.
• Federal Minister for Finance and Revenue Shaukat Tarin announced that the IMF had revived Pakistan`s $6bn loan programme after the country met several conditions of the global lender in recent weeks


4. Cabinet panel approves investment in Ruda industrial zones

• The Cabinet Committee on Legislative Business has approved investment in Ravi Urban Development Authority (Ruda) industrial zones.
• The decision allows Ruda to enter into an agreement with a Saudi investor for investment in industrial zones 2A and 3A under Ruda.
• The cabinet committee chaired by Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Basharat Raja here on Thursday also allowed the Excise and Taxation department to enter into an agreement with Pakistan Post for delivery of vehicles number plates and registration documents through post office for the convenience of the applicants.
• The meeting approved the transfer policy of the special education department and sale of 15,000 metric tonnes of wheat to Gilgit Baltistan


5. Amendment barring dual nationals to impact 20,000 bureaucrats

• A proposed amendment in the civil service rules could affect as many as 20,000 civil servants, a parliamentary body was told The matter came up before the Senate Standing Committee on Cabinet Secretariat during discussion on the `The Civil Servants (Amendment) Bill, 2021` moved by Senator Afnan Ullah Khan in the sitting held on Jan 17, 2022, The proposed amendment bars civil servants from holding dual nationality and suggests a timeline for dual national civil servants to relinquish their foreign nationality.
• Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Ali Mohammad Khan was of view that government servants should not hold dual nationality during service because one person cannot be loyal to two countries at the same time.
• A recent report submitted to the Supreme Court on dual nationality revealed that more than 22,000 top government officers are dual nationals. According to the report,11,000 officers belong to police and bureaucracy.

6. Britain to increase investment in Balochistan

• The Balochistan chief minister and the British High Commissioner agreed on February 3, 2022 to increase British investment in various sectors.
• This understanding was reached when British High Commissioner Dr Christian Turner met Chief Minister Abdul Qudoos Bizenjo here on Thursday and discussed ways to increase British investment in the province.
• The two agreed that Balochistan`s Board of Investment and Trade would consult the British Deputy High Commissioner for trade for follow-up measures.
• Mr Bizenjo apprised the British High Commissioner of the progress being made on Reko-Dig project and some other projects in the province


7. SBP launches free P2P fund transfers under Raast

• The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) on February 3, 2022 directed banks to introduce free person-to-person (P2P) fund transfers under Raast, a digital payment system.
• The central bank said it has issued instructions to banks that will enable P2P payments in the country through Raast.
• The central bank has been working hard for reforms in the financial system through digitisation and improvement in the payment system.
• Several measures were taken to bring the payment system on a fast track with minimum time spent


8. Taliban close to international recognition, claims foreign minister

• The Taliban are inching closer towards international recognition but any concessions Afghanistan`s new rulers make will be on their terms, the regime`s foreign minister said in an interview.
• In his first interview since returning from talks with Western powers in Oslo, Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi also urged Washington to unlock Afghanistan`s assets to help ease a humanitarian crisis.
• No country has formally recognised the government installed after the Taliban seized power in August as US-led forces withdrew following a 20-year occupation.
• But Muttaqi said that Afghanistan`s new rulers were slowly gaining international acceptance


9. Erdogan offers to host summit on Ukraine

• Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan offered on February 3, 2022 on a visit to Kiev to hold a Ukraine-Russia summit, as EU leaders stepped up outreach to the Kremlin to defuse fears Moscow could invade.
• The diplomatic offensive came as Russia accused the United States of ratcheting up `tensions` by sending 1,000 soldiers to Romania and 2,000 to Poland to bolster Nato`s eastern flank.
• As Moscow refuses to pull back over 100,000 troops from Ukraine`s borders, the leaders of European powerhouses Germany and France said they were eyeing possible visits to Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow.
• French President Emmanuel Macron was set to hold his third phone call in a week with Putin later on Thursday and also talk to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky


10. Israel, Bahrain sign new defence memo in signal towards Iran

• Israel and Bahrain signed a defence agreement on February 3, 2022 as part of a show of cooperation aimed at sending a message towards archenemy Iran.
• Defence Minister Benny Gantz signed the memorandum of understanding with his Bahraini counterpart in the capital of Manama, a key step after the two nations normalised ties in 2020.
• He called the agreement `a new high point in the countries` relationship that will help protect other countries in the region. Earlier, Gantz and his Bahraini counterpart visited the headquarters of the US Navy`s 5th Fleet, which is based in the strategically located Persian Gulf country
