6. Germany seizes Russian energy firm`s subsidiaries

• Berlin on September 16, 2022 took control of the German operations of Russian oil firm Rosneft to secure energy supplies which have been disrupted after Moscow invaded Ukraine.
• Rosneft`s German subsidiaries, which account for about 12 per cent of oil refining capacity in the country, were placed under trusteeship of the Federal Network Agency, the economy ministry said in a statement.
• `The trust management will counter the threat to the security of energy supply,` it said.
• Chancellor Olaf Scholz said his government `did not take this action lightly but it was inevitable` for the `protection of our country`


7. Modi springs surprise by assailing Putin

• Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi told Russian President Vladimir Putin on September 16, 2022 that now was not the time for war, directly assailing the Kremlin chief in public over the nearly seven month-long conflict in Ukraine.
• Putin has repeatedly said Russia is not isolated because it can look eastwards to major Asian powers such as China and India.
• But at the summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO), concerns spilled out into the open.
• `I know that today`s era is not an era of war, and I have spoken to you on the phone about this,` Modi told Putin at a televised meeting in Samarkand

• Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese leader Xi Jinping looked to rally Asian leaders behind a new `international order` as they met on September 16, 2022 for a summit aimed at challenging Western influence.
• But cracks in summit solidarity quickly appeared, with the Indian prime minister telling Putin it was `not the time` for the conflict in Ukraine and the forces of two countries _ Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan engaged in fierce border clashes while their leaders were in attendance.
• The meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) in ex-Soviet Uzbekistan brought Putin and Xi together with the leaders of SCO members Pakistan, India, and four Central Asian nations, as well as the presidents of Iran and Turkey


9. Ukraine finds `graves and torture centres` in eastern region

• Ukrainian investigators descended on a pine forest outside the recaptured town of Izyum on September 16, 2022 and began pulling hundreds of hastily buried bodies from the sandy soil.
• At least one of the corpses had been buried with bound hands, according to an eyewitness.
• Kyiv officials said they had counted 450 graves at the mass burial site and found 10 alleged `torture centres` after the Kharkiv region was recaptured from Russians .
• In the forest outside Izyum, eyewitnesses said they saw graves topped with makeshift crosses and marked with numbers, with one inscription reading: `Ukrainian army, 17 people. Izyum morgue.


10. Chile snubs Israeli envoy to protest West Bank killing

• A diplomatic tussle intensified on September 16, 2022 after Chile`s president put off accepting the credentials of Israel`s new ambassador to Santiago over the killing in the occupied West Bank of a Palestinian teenager.
• In response, Israel`s foreign ministry summoned Chilean ambassador Jorge Carvajal for what it called a reprimand at a meeting where, it said, `Israel`s response will be made clear`.
• The dispute began on Thursday when Chilean Foreign Minister Antonia Urrejola informed newly appointed Israeli Ambassador Gil Artzyeli that Chilean President Gabriel Boric had postponed a meeting to accept his credentials until next month.
