1. Nine more judges receive `toxic` mail

A day after the judges of the Islamabad High Court received letters allegedly laced with a toxic substance, similar letters arrived in the Supreme Court and the Lahore High Court, prompting the Counter-Terrorism Department to register two terrorism cases in Islamabad and Lahore


2. Cabinet approves Rs3,900 per 40kg wheat support price

The Punjab cabinet has fixed wheat support price at Rs3,900 per 40kg.
`It is my commitment to ensure that the interests of small farmers are protected at all costs,` said Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz while presiding over a cabinet meeting here on Wednesday.
The minimum support price of wheat for the year 2023-2024 was fixed by the cabinet at Rs3,900 per 40 kg. It also approved wheat procurement policy 2024-25


3. US pledges to expand security partnership with Pakistan

The State Department said on Wednesday that the United States would continue to expand its security partnership with Pakistan.
At a news briefing in Washington, a US official also emphasised the need to ensure that international assistance sent to Afghanistan did not reach `unintended recipients`.
When reminded of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif`s offer to work with the US on the shared targets of international peace and regional security, Spokesperson Matthew Miller said Washington was also willing to do so


4. President, COAS concerned over `baseless allegations` against army

President Asif Ali Zardari and Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Gen Syed Asim Munir in their first official meeting on Wednesday expressed concern over `baseless and unsubstantiated` allegations levelled by a specific political party and its few individuals against the army for meeting their political designs.
The meeting took place at the Presidency where the COAS called on President Zardari and congratulated him on assuming the charge of his office


5. Ministers get more portfolios, coordinators appointed

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Wednesday allocated additional portfolios to at least five federal ministers and appointed three coordinators on different subjects, including climate change, for `expert advice`.
The government claimed that the coordinators would not be part of the federal cabinet and would work on an an honorary basis. Romina Khurshid Alam was appointed a coordinator for climate change and environmental coordination, Shabbir Ahmed Usmani for Kashmir Affairs and Gilgit Baltistan, and Rana Ihsaan Afzal Khan on general issues. Before this, the premier had appointed Dr Malik Mukhtar Ahmed as his coordinator on the National Health Services and Rana Mashood as coordinator of the youth programme last week

6. Afghan minister asks TTP, Islamabad to negotiate

Dozens of people were believed safe but unreachable in areas cut off by massive landslides triggered by the quake many in tunnels that cut through the mountains that bisect the island from north to south


8. US directs Nasa to create lunar time standard

The White House announced on Tuesday it is directing Nasa to create a unified time standard for the Moon and other celestial bodies, as governments and private companies increasingly compete in space. With the United States keen to set international norms beyond Earth`s orbit, the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) instructed the US space agency to formulate a plan by the end of 2026 for a standard it is calling Coordinated Lunar Time


9. Nato mulls $107bn fund for Ukraine

Nato allies agreed on Wednesday to initiate planning on long-term military support for Ukraine, but a proposal by Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg to do so via a 100 billion-euro ($107 billion) five-year fund drew mixed responses.
Ministers said such a fund would not be easy to put together. Ukraine said it would be welcome, but needed to be fresh money


10. Palestine revives bid to become UN member

Palestine on Tuesday officially revived their bid for a full member state in the United Nations a process with an uncertain outcome but one they say is necessary in the face of Israel`s offensive in Gaza.
The Palestinians, who have had observer status at the world body since 2012, have lobbied for years to gain full membership, which would amount to recognition of Palestinian statehood
