1. ECP to unveil poll schedule next week

With the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) all set to unveil schedule for the Feb 8 polls next week, Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja on Thursday said printing and delivery of final electoral rolls had successfully been completed.
Talking to Dawn, a senior official said the schedule would most probably be announced on Dec 14. At the same time, he added, district returning officers (DROs), returning officers (ROs), and assistant returning officers (AROs) would also be appointed


2. Quetta hosts UN Women`s campaign

Speakers at the launch of the UN Women`s Koi Jawaz Nahi campaign reiterated their commitment to safeguarding women and girls, marking the 16-day campaign against gender based violence.
The campaign actively champions this year`s theme -`Invest to Prevent Violence Against Women & Girls` with the goal of widespread outreach. Supported by the government of Japan, this initiative aims to highlight the ongoing issue of gender-based violence and encourages united efforts for prevention and eradication


3. Commissioner orders strict implementation of ban No smoking in govt offices, public places

Divisional Commissioner Muhammad Ali Randhawa has ordered strict implementation of a ban on smoking in all government offices and public places.
He made the announcement at an official meeting here on Thursday.
First of all, heads of all departments will nominate a focal person and two master trainers (of their department) at the divisional level, who will be trained in ensuring a smoke-free city


4. Eight in 10 Pakistanis concerned about climate change impacts: WB report

A World Bank report has pointed out that eight in 10 people in Pakistan are concerned about impacts of climate change, with female and educated people being more concerned.
The report titled, Climate Silence in Pakistan, has observed that climate change has profoundly affected Pakistan, manifesting in altered weather patterns and devastating floods


5. SBP forex reserves fall $237m in a week

The State Bank`s foreign exchange reserves dropped by $237 million to $7 billion in the week ending Dec 1, the central bank said in a statement on Thursday, as debt servicing on foreign loans continues to eat up SBP`s holdings.
The country`s total liquid foreign reserves stood at $12.1bn, including $5.09bn held by commercial banks, the central bank said. The SBP has now lost more than $1.7bn since mid-July

6. Gaza toll crosses 17,000 after 350 killed in a day

Heavy urban combat raged in and around Gaza`s biggest cities on Thursday as Israeli forces unleashed an aerial and ground blitz, leaving 350 dead in 24 hours, with the rest struggling to survive in rapidly shrinking areas of refuge.

7. Denmark`s parliament bans desecration of religious books

Denmark`s parliament on Thursday adopted a law criminalising the `inappropriate treatment` of religious books, effectively banning burning of the Holy Quran after a series of desecrations sparked anger in Muslim countries over the summer.
The bill, which prohibits `inappropriate treatment of writings with significant religious importance for a recognised religious community`, was passed with 94 votes in favour and 77 opposed in the 179-seat Folketing


8. Russia, Saudi Arabia urge all Opec+ powers to join oil cuts

Saudi Arabia and Russia, the world`s two biggest oil exporters, on Thursday called for all Opec+ members to join an agreement on output cuts for the good of the global economy only days after a fractious meeting of the producers` club.
Hours after Russian President Vladimir Putin went to Riyadh in a hastily arranged visit to meet Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, the Kremlin released a joint Russian-Saudi statement about the conclusion of their discussions


9. UAE tables resolution calling for `immediate ceasefire` in Gaza

The United Arab Emirates, the only Arab country on the 15-strong Security Council, tabled a resolution on Thursday demanding an `immediate humanitarian ceasefire` in Gaza Strip. And at a joint media stakeout Arab and OIC Groups at the UN backed the call for an immediate ceasefire. `We sincerely hope that the Security Council will adopt the resolution and will listen to brave, courageous and principled position of the Secretary General,` they said in a joint statement.
Another statement by Pakistan`s permanent mission at the UN said: `Pakistan has joined the Arab Group and the OIC Group to press the UN Security Council to adopt the UAE`s draft resolution that calls for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza
