1. SC suspends order striking down trials in military courts

The Supreme Court, in a 5-1 majority decision, suspended on Wednesday the operation of its Oct 23 short order that had declared `unconstitutional` the military trial of 103 civilians for their alleged involvement in May 9 violence.
Now, the trials of such individuals can proceed, but military courts are bound not to convictor acquit the suspects as long as the government-instituted intra court appeals (ICAs) are being heard by the apex court


2. ADB sees inflation easing owing to monetary tightening

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) on Wednesday said Pakistan`s overall recovery was still constrained by moderate confidence and high inflation was eroding the purchasing power of its population.
In its December 2023 `Asian Development Outlook`, the Manila based lending agency expected Pakistan`s inflation rate to ease from an average of 28.5pc in July-October, owing to fiscal consolidation and monetary tightening, as well as the improved availability of food and key imported inputs


3. Azad Kashmir govt tables defamation law in assembly amid protest by journalists

The Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) government on Wednesday tabled a piece of law in the legislative assembly to `curb defamation` in a move that opposition and media persons maintained will in fact suppress the freedom of expression.
During the legislation business, when law minister Mian Abdul Waheed, who belongs to the PPP, introduced `The Azad Jammu and Kashmir Defamation Act, 2021` in the house, journalists present in the media gallery rose to their seats and staged a walkout in protest against what they alleged was a `black law`


4. Kabul promises to probe D.I. Khan attack

A day after Pakistan issued a demarche to Kabul following a deadly gun and bomb attack targeting a military compound in Dera Ismail Khan, the interim Afghanistan government promised to probe the terror attack, but also asked Islamabad to refrain from blaming Kabul for every problem.
Taliban chief spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid said Kabul would investigate the attack. `We are shocked at the attack in Pakistan. We will look into the demands made by Pakistan, ` he told Dawn.com. He also asked Pakistan to bolster its security instead of pointing fingers at Afghanistan

5. Israel vows to continue war on Gaza, with or without world support

In the face of international outcry and pressure from its staunchest ally in Washington, Israeli Foreign Minister Eli Cohen declared on Wednesday his government`s determination to continue its war on Gaza `with or without international support`.

6. Overwhelming UN vote underlines need for ceasefire

The UN General Assembly on Tuesday overwhelmingly voted in favor of a resolution demanding an immediate humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza.

8. 53 injured in Russian missile strikes on Kyiv

A volley of Russian missiles wounded several people and damaged a children`s hospital on Wednesday, the worst attack on Kyiv in months, Ukrainian officials said, as the country pleads for Western military aid.
Journalists in the capital heard several explosions before dawn, and air raid sirens sounded soon after that. Ukraine`s air force said it had downed all 10 missiles targeting the city and the health ministry said 53 people had been wounded, including two children


9. COP28 yields `historic` accord on transition away from fossil fuels

For the first time on Wednesday, nations approved a call to transition away from fossil fuels as UN negotiations in Dubai tackled the top culprit behind climate change, but at-risk countries said far more action was needed.
More than 100 countries had lobbied hard for strong language in the COP28 agreement to `phase out` oil, gas and coal use, but came up against powerful opposition from the Saudi Arabia-led oil producer group Opec, which said the world can cut emissions without shunning specific fuels
