EU chief Ursula von der Leyen on Wednesday backed imposing sanctions on `extremist` Israeli settlers responsible for attacks on Palestinians in the West Bank.
`The rise in violence by extremist settlers is inflicting immense suffering on the Palestinians. It undermines the prospects for a lasting peace and could further exacerbate regional instability,` the European Commission president told EU lawmakers


8. 53 injured in Russian missile strikes on Kyiv

A volley of Russian missiles wounded several people and damaged a children`s hospital on Wednesday, the worst attack on Kyiv in months, Ukrainian officials said, as the country pleads for Western military aid.
Journalists in the capital heard several explosions before dawn, and air raid sirens sounded soon after that. Ukraine`s air force said it had downed all 10 missiles targeting the city and the health ministry said 53 people had been wounded, including two children


9. COP28 yields `historic` accord on transition away from fossil fuels

For the first time on Wednesday, nations approved a call to transition away from fossil fuels as UN negotiations in Dubai tackled the top culprit behind climate change, but at-risk countries said far more action was needed.
More than 100 countries had lobbied hard for strong language in the COP28 agreement to `phase out` oil, gas and coal use, but came up against powerful opposition from the Saudi Arabia-led oil producer group Opec, which said the world can cut emissions without shunning specific fuels

Suryakumar Yadav and Rinku Singh hit rapid half-centuries for India but South Africa chased down an adjusted target to win the second Twenty20 International by five wickets at St George`s Park in Gqeberha on Tuesday.
India, sent in to bat, were 180 for seven when rain ended the innings with three balls remaining in their 20 overs.
After a delay of almost an hour, South Africa were set to make 152 off 15 overs
