1. Poll campaigns conclude after lacklustre run

At the stroke of midnight, a relatively lacklustre election campaign came to an end on Tuesday, as the Election Commission of Pakistan issued an advisory restraining all political parties and candidates from canvassing for Feb 8 polls.
The last day of the campaign trail took PPP Chairperson Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari to Larkana home to the Bhutto political dynasty-whereas PML-N supreme leader Nawaz Sharif chose Kasur the constituency of his younger brother Shehbaz Sharif to end their political campaign on a high note. Mr Sharif was also supposed to speak at a rally in Lahore, but it was cancelled


2. Barriers for women, attacks on candidates irk UN panel

As the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights voiced concern over the violation of law requiring political parties to award five per cent of tickets to women, the Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Tuesday sought reply from the Election Commission of Pakistan (E CP) over the matter.
Ahead of Thursday`s general elections, the UN human rights body appealed to the authorities in Pakistan to ensure a fully free and fair vote and to recommit to the democratic process

3. Govt hints at shutting down internet over `security` issue

Caretaker Interior Minister Gohar Ejaz on Tuesday hinted at the possible suspension of the internet service in case of security issues in any area on the election day (tomorrow) while Amnesty International called for uninterrupted internet access across the country during the polling process.
The minister said the government would consider suspending the internet service on Feb 8 only if it receives a request from a district or province in view of the security situation. Mr Ejaz claimed that the caretaker government had so far not made any decision to suspend the internet service on polling day and that any such action would only be taken on a request from a province or a district concerned


4. Army placed on standby in Islamabad

As part of the election security plan, army has been placed on a standby in the federal capital and will be called in case of any untoward incident.
Sources in the capital police and administration said as per the security plan finalised, the senior superintendent of police (SSP) Islamabad will intimate the commanding officers of Eight Baloch Regiment, 86 Field Regiment and 17 Field Regiment stationed at Rawalpindi and Islamabad for deployment and necessary assistance. The three infantry regiments will respond in case of any major incident


5. Caretakers defy ECP directive, okay PIA restructuring

A day after the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) barred the caretakers from taking any step vis-à-vis Pakistan International Airlines (PIA), including its privatisation, the federal cabinet on Tuesday approved a plan for restructuring of the national flag carrier.
The decision was taken at a meeting presided over by caretaker Prime Minister Anwaarul Haq Kakar

6. UN calls Rafah invasion war crime; Hamas responds to truce offer

The UN aid coordination office (OCHA) warned on Tuesday that Israel`s invasion of the densely populated southern city of Rafah would constitute a war crime.
`We, as the UN and member states, can bear witness,` OCHA spokesperson Jens Laerke told journalists. `We can make it clear that under international humanitarian law, indiscriminate bombing of densely populated areas may amount to war crimes


7. BJP tables common civil law bill, irks Muslims

India`s ruling party introduced contentious legislation on Tuesday to create a common civil code in a northern state, including for marriage, reigniting a polarising debate weeks before national elections.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi`s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has long campaigned for standardised individual laws but its pitch has fuelled tensions, with many minority Muslims seeing it as yet another majoritarian push by Modi`s Hindu nationalist party


8. Hamas condemns Argentina`s Jerusalem embassy plans

Hamas on Tuesday said it `strongly condemns` Argentinian President Javier Milei after he announced plans to move his country`s embassy to Jerusalem.
Hamas said it viewed the move `an infringement of the rights of our Palestinian people to their land, and a violation of the rules of international law, considering Jerusalem as occupied Palestinian land`.
Argentina would become one of only a handful of countries to have its main diplomatic mission in Jerusalem, rather than Tel Aviv


9. Ex-Chilean president dies in copter crash

Chile`s ex president Sebastian Pinera died in a helicopter crash in the south of the country on Tuesday, plunging the country he led for two terms into mourning and prompting an outpouring of condolences from Latin American leaders.
Interior Minister Carolina Toha confirmed the death of the 74-year-old former president, who held the office from 2010 to 2014 and from 2018 to 2022.
Three other passengers survived the helicopter crash in the southern town of Lago Ranco. Pinera`s body had been recovered, said Toha


10. Mohsin becomes first elected PCB chairman in 13 months

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) saw an elected chairman take its office for the first time in 13 months after media mogul Mohsin Naqvi was voted in unopposed by the body`s Board of Governors (BoG) on Tuesday.
Mohsin, who is set to leave his role as the caretaker chief minister of Punjab after Thursday`s general elections, was nominated as one of the BoG members by caretaker Prime Minister Anwar-ul-Haq Kakar the PCB`s patron-in-chief as the premier on January 27
