1. Poll campaigns conclude after lacklustre run
At the stroke of midnight, a relatively lacklustre election campaign came to an end on Tuesday, as the Election Commission of Pakistan issued an advisory restraining all political parties and candidates from canvassing for Feb 8 polls.
The last day of the campaign trail took PPP Chairperson Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari to Larkana home to the Bhutto political dynasty-whereas PML-N supreme leader Nawaz Sharif chose Kasur the constituency of his younger brother Shehbaz Sharif to end their political campaign on a high note. Mr Sharif was also supposed to speak at a rally in Lahore, but it was cancelled
2. Barriers for women, attacks on candidates irk UN panel
As the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights voiced concern over the violation of law requiring political parties to award five per cent of tickets to women, the Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Tuesday sought reply from the Election Commission of Pakistan (E CP) over the matter.
Ahead of Thursday`s general elections, the UN human rights body appealed to the authorities in Pakistan to ensure a fully free and fair vote and to recommit to the democratic process
3. Govt hints at shutting down internet over `security` issue
Caretaker Interior Minister Gohar Ejaz on Tuesday hinted at the possible suspension of the internet service in case of security issues in any area on the election day (tomorrow) while Amnesty International called for uninterrupted internet access across the country during the polling process.
The minister said the government would consider suspending the internet service on Feb 8 only if it receives a request from a district or province in view of the security situation. Mr Ejaz claimed that the caretaker government had so far not made any decision to suspend the internet service on polling day and that any such action would only be taken on a request from a province or a district concerned
4. Army placed on standby in Islamabad
As part of the election security plan, army has been placed on a standby in the federal capital and will be called in case of any untoward incident.
Sources in the capital police and administration said as per the security plan finalised, the senior superintendent of police (SSP) Islamabad will intimate the commanding officers of Eight Baloch Regiment, 86 Field Regiment and 17 Field Regiment stationed at Rawalpindi and Islamabad for deployment and necessary assistance. The three infantry regiments will respond in case of any major incident
5. Caretakers defy ECP directive, okay PIA restructuring
A day after the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) barred the caretakers from taking any step vis-à-vis Pakistan International Airlines (PIA), including its privatisation, the federal cabinet on Tuesday approved a plan for restructuring of the national flag carrier.
