1. Pakistan, Iran`s envoys set to make comeback by 26th

Pakistan and Iran on Monday agreed to reinstate their ambassadors by Jan 26, following a bilateral dispute that escalated with Iranian strikes on Pakistani territory.
Furthermore, Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian is set to visit Islamabad on Jan 29, accepting an invitation from his Pakistani counterpart Jalil Abbas Jilani.
This agreement was reached during a phone conversation between the two foreign ministers, marking their third discussion since the Iranian strikes


2. Ram temple `an affront to Indian Muslims`, says FO

As Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi heralded the inauguration of a temple in Ayodhya as a `new era` for India on Monday, Pakistan condemned the grand celebrations and described it as a `symbol of growing majoritarianism and an affront to the Muslim community in India`.
At a grand event attended by some seven thousand guests, Mr Modi consecrated the idol of Lord Ram at the new temple built on the site where the Babri Masjid stood for centuries before it was demolished by a Hindutva mob in 1992

3. World Bank touts more loans despite debt sustainability risks

The World Bank has started marketing more loans to Pakistan with a formal $425 million upfront offer to finance microfinance banks and social sector projects including the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP).
This was disclosed by the Ministry of Finance after Caretaker Finance Minister Dr Shamshad Akhtar had a meeting with a World Bank team led by its Country Director Najy Binhassine on Monday and raised questions over the proposed fresh loans to the government for the microfinance sector while public debt already faced sustainability risks


4. Commitment for CPEC success renewed

Pakistan and China on Monday renewed their commitment for the success of China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) as the two sides expressed their desire for enhanced cooperation in the areas of information technology, economy, agriculture, and human resource development.
Both sides expressed this resolve during a series of meetings of visiting China`s Vice Foreign Minister Sun Weidong with President Arif Alvi, caretaker Prime Minister Anwaarul Haq Kakar, caretaker Foreign Minister Jalil Abbas Jilani and Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) Gen Syed Asim Munir


5. Media freedom declines due to censorship, threats: report

The relationship between the state and media deteriorated during the past two years due to growing instances of censorship, violence against journalists and government disdain for critism, according to a report.
The report titled Under Siege: Legislative, Judicial and Executive Actions Stifling Freedom of Expression and Right to Information was published by the Institute of Research, Advocacy and Development (IRADA) as part of its annual state of digital journalism series. `This year`s report examines key legislative developments in Pakistan during the critical year of 2023, shedding light on recent acts impacting freedom of expression, access to information and the digital media landscape, `Muhammad Aftab Alam, the executive director of IRADA said

6. Israeli forces storm hospital in Khan Yunis

Israeli forces, advancing deep into southern Gaza`s Khan Yunis city on Monday in the heaviest assault of the new year so far, stormed one hospital and placed another under siege, cutting the wounded off from trauma care.

7. Turkish legislature to vote on Sweden`s Nato membership this week

Turkiye`s parliament is expected to end more than a year of delays that severely strained its ties with Western allies and approve Sweden`s membership of Nato this week.
CNN Turk said a vote could be held as early as Tuesday while a source said that it might be held on Thursday.
Turkey`s ratification would leave Hungary as the last holdout in an accession process that Sweden and its neighbour Finland began in response to Russia`s invasion of Ukraine nearly two years ago. Finland became the 31st member of the US-led defence alliance last April


8. US sanctions airline, Iraqi militia leaders after attacks on troops

The United States announced sanctions on Monday on Iraqi low-cost airline Fly Baghdad, saying it provided assistance to Iran`s Revolutionary Guards and proxies, while also targeting leaders of a pro-Iranian Iraq militia for sanctions.
The moves come as Iraq`s powerful pro-Iranian armed group Kataeb Hezbollah has `carried out a series of sharply escalating drone and missile attacks against US personnel in Iraq and Syria,` said the US Treasury Department in a statement


9. Families of prisoners interrupt Israeli parliament to demand their release

Relatives of Israeli prisoners in Hamasruled Gaza interrupted a parliamentary meeting on Monday, demanding the government take urgent action to get them released.
The group broke into a meeting of the Knesset`s finance committee, chanting `everybody and now` to urge the return of all hostages. `You sit here while our children are dying over there,` Gilad Korngold, father of Tal Shoham, yelled, a correspondent reported


10. WHO chief warns pandemic accord hangs in the balance

The World Health Organisation chief fears plans for a global pandemic preparedness agreement will fall apart amid wrangling and disinformation, warning on Monday that future generations `may not forgive us`.
Shaken by the Covid-19 pandemic, the WHO`s 194 member states decided more than two years ago to start negotiating an international accord aimed at ensuring countries are better equipped to deal with the next health catastrophe, or to prevent it altogether
