1. Centre, Sindh trade barbs over Covid-19

• In the backdrop of an escalating war of words between the ruling Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf and the Pakistan

Peoples Party, the National Coordination Committee on April 13, 2020 deferred a decision on lockdown for a day.
• The difference of opinion between Prime Minister Imran Khan and the Sindh government on the issue of lockdown had been simmering for weeks but it flared up on Sunday when PTI ministers openly criticised the Sindh government and in particular Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah for his policies in combating Covid-19.
• This prompted Mr Shah to hold a press conference on Monday in which he reiterated his position that a strict lockdown was the only viable option at this stage to slow the spread of coronavirus. `I am surprised that some people, who had been perhaps in hibernation, came up suddenly and started criticising me for imposing lockdown,` the CM said, adding that he had no objection to their criticism in foul language but then they should also criticise the leadership of other provinces who also imposed lockdown following the Sindh government`s decision.

2. Two army pilots martyred as aircraft crashes

• Two Army Aviation pilots were martyred on April 13, 2 020 when their trainer aircraft crashed near Gujrat during a routine training mission.
• The Inter-Services Public Relations in a statement on the crash said both pilots on board the Mushaq training aircraft were martyred.
• The pilots were identified as Major Umer, the instructor pilot, and Lt Faizan, the trainee pilot.
• No reason for the early morning crash was given.
• There have been four military related crashes this year.

3. Teleschool goes on air today to compensate for academic loss

• Prime Minister Imran Khan on April 13, 2020 inaugurated a national broadcast education channel to mitigate the loss faced by the students due to the closure of educational institutions till May 31 in the wake of coronavirus pandemic.
• Teleschool the dedicated TV channel will be aired through a beam provided by Pakistan Television (PTV) from Tuesday (April 13, 2020) across the country from 8am to 6pm for online education from class one to 12.
• Speaking at its launching ceremony, the prime minister said that teleschool would help students learn during the closure of schools. This initiative would also help the government reach the remote areas, which didn`t have access to education facilities and infrastructure, Mr Khan said.

4. Section 144 extended for two months across Punjab

• The Punjab government on April 13, 2020 extended Section 144 across the province, including Rawalpindi, for two months due to the rapid increase in coronavirus cases in the province.
• As many as 12 new cases of coronavirus were recorded in Rawalpindi district, raising the total number to 128.
• On the other hand, 16 confirmed patients were discharged from hospitals after they recovered from the disease.

5. IMF acknowledges Pakistan`s response to pandemic

• The International Monetary Fund (IMF) on April 13, 2020 noted the rapid pace at which Covid-19 has been spreading in Pakistan and acknowledged the Rs1.2 trillion relief package announced by the government.
• `Covid-19 has been spreading rapidly in the past month in Pakistan, with 4,489 confirmed cases claiming 63 deaths, as of April 9`, the IMF said in its new publication `Policy Tracker` of its 193 member states.
• The fund said both the federal and provincial governments, in response, have implemented a range of measures to delay and contain the spread of the virus.

6. Aleem Khan takes oath as provincial minister

• PTI MPA Abdul Aleem Khan on April 13,2020 has been inducted into the provincial cabinet once again, a year after his arrest by the National Accountability Bureau in cases pertaining to his offshore companies and assets beyond known sources of income.
• Punjab Governor Chaudhry Mohammad Sarwar administered the oath to Abdul Aleem Khan at Drabar Hall of Governor House at a simple ceremony also attended by Punjab Chief Minister Sardar Usman Buzdar, provincial ministers, Chief Secretary Maj. (R) Azam Suleman Khan and other senior officials.
• Though the chief minister has not yet announced any portfolio for Aleem Khan, sources said that he would be assigned the portfolios of local government department, food and P&D departments.

7. Punjab imposes ban on new recruitments, purchase of vehicles

• On the direction of Chief Minister Sardar Usman Buzdar, the Punjab government has imposed a ban on unnecessary expenditures of provincial departments along with placing a ban on new recruitments, the release of supplementary grants, purchase of new vehicles and other luxurious items.
• However, the recruitment of doctors and other staff will be allowed in the health department due to impending panademic.
• Provincial Finance Minister Hashim Jawan Bakht directed the departments to strictly follow financial discipline and austerity measures as an unusual situation was being faced by the government due to coronavirus pandemic. He said that Rs18 billion tax relief had been given along with the provision of more than Rs15 billion to the health department and PDMA. He said that this was in addition to the provision of Rs10 billion for the financial aid of the deserving people. He disclosed that people would also be given relief in the month of Ramadan. The minister asserted the government was fully focused on the control of coronavirus as well as to provide best treatment facilities to the citizens. Similarly, provision of PPEs and other necessary equipment to doctors and paramedics was a part of governmental priorities, he added.

8. China says it sent teams to world countries to deal with Covid-19

• China has sent a team of medical experts to different countries on the request of governments of these countries to help the local health authorities battle against Covid-19, a Chinese foreign office (FO) spokesperson said on April 13, 2020.
• Since the outbreak of the new coronavirus pandemic, China had dispatched teams of medical experts to Pakistan, Italy, Serbia, Cambodia, the Philippines, Myanmar, Kazakhstan and other countries on the request of these countries’ governments, Zhao Lijian said during his regular briefing held here.
• “We sent our experts to discuss our experiences with the local health authorities, help them enhance their capability of treatment of coronavirus patients and boost their confidence,” he added

9. ADB triples Covid-19 package to $20bn

• The Asian Development Bank (ADB) on April 13, 2020 tripled the size of its response to the novel coronavirus disease (Covid-19) pandemic to $20 billion and approved measures to streamline its operations for quicker and more flexible delivery of assistance.
• The package expands ADB`s $6.5 billion initial response announced on March 18, adding $13.5bn in resources to help ADB`s developing member countries counter the severe macroeconomic and health impacts caused by Covid19.
• The $20bn package includes about $2.5bn in concessional and grant resources, according to a news release issued here

10. Pakistan Railways’ to keep operations suspended till April 24

• Pakistan Railways has extended the suspension of the operations of all the passenger train services till April 24 due to the ongoing lockdown.
• “After deliberations we have decided that those trains which we wanted to operate from April 15 have been delayed and the operations will now be resumed on April 25 or first Ramadan,” Federal Minister for Railways Sheikh Rashid Ahmad said in an interaction with the media.
• In his video message he said that prior to 1st of Ramadan “we will again deliberate the matter and will discuss it with Prime Minster and other high officials to decide whether to operate the trains on April 25 or not.” “For now, the operations of trains will stay suspended till midnight April 24,” he said adding that the service of freight trains will continue. Sheikh Rasheed said that “we have offered the government to use trains as quarantine hospitals at Taftan and Chaman Borders. “God forbid, if pandemic erupted in other areas across Pakistan our trains will be available to be used as hospitals,” the minister maintained.
