1. Firdous appointed Punjab CM’s Special Assistant, Fayyaz removed

• In a surprise move, Punjab Chief Minister Sardar Usman Buzdar November 2, 2020 made a key change in his media team by replacing Fayyaz-ul-Hassan Chohan with Dr Firdous Aashiq Awan leaving many guessing at the reasons behind this important decision.
• This is for the second time that portfolio of Fayyaz Chohan has been changed. He was first removed as Information Minister last year due to his controversial remarks about the Hindu Community. He was reassigned this portfolio after a gap of four months.
• Mr Chohan was holding additional charge of information department but he has been allowed to retain the portfolio of Colonies department. Dr Firdous Awan has been appointed as Special Assistant to the Chief Minister on Information in place of Javaid Akhtar

2. Pakistan’s exports crossed $2 billion in October

• Pakistan’s exports have crossed $2 billion in October 2020 despite the contraction in major markets and the uncertainty created by recent resurgence of the COVID-19 pandemic.
• “Alhamdolillah, our exports have maintained the growth trend in October 2020. Our exports have crossed the 2 billion mark after July 2020 and are back on track to pre-COVID- 19 levels. This is despite the contraction in our major markets due to COVID-19 and the uncertainty created by recent resurgence of the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Advisor to Prime Minister on Commerce and Investment Abdul Razak Dawood on twitter. He congratulated the exporters on crossing $2 billion exports in last month

3. Zulfi launches country homes, luxury apartments scheme for expats

• Special Assistant to the Prime Minister (SAPM) on Overseas Pakistanis and Human Resource Development Syaed Zulfikar Abbas Bukhari November 2, 2020 launched the ‘Country Homes and Luxury Apartments’ scheme at OPF valley Zone V to provide safe, secure and lucrative investment opportunities to expatriates in the housing sector.
• Addressing to the launching ceremony here, he said the scheme included 200 villas, which would be built in four phases for offering accommodation facilities to the expats at par international standards

4. IS attack on Kabul varsity kills 22

• At least 22 people were killed when attackers stormed one of Afghanistan`s main universities on November 2, 2020, detonating a suicide bomb and spraying classrooms with bullets in a brazen hours-long assault claimed by militant Islamic State group.
• The attack on Kabul University, which came as violence surges across Afghanistan, marked the second time in less than two weeks that an educational institution was targeted in the capital by IS extremists

5. New Zealand gets tattooed Maori foreign minister, gay deputy PM

• Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern unveiled what she called an “incredibly diverse” cabinet November 2, 2020 that includes New Zealand’s first openly gay deputy prime minister and a foreign minister with a Maori facial tattoo.
• The centre-left leader revamped her ministerial line-up in the wake of a landslide election victory, saying her second-term priorities were responding to Covid-19 and promoting economic recovery. Ardern appointed Grant Robertson as deputy prime minister, making him the first openly gay person to hold the role

6. Exposing graft bigger hazard for journalists than war, says UNESCO

• Journalists were more likely to be killed in the last two years for exposing corruption or rights violations than while covering conflict zones, said a UN report on November 2, 2020, highlighting a `worrying trend`.
• A total of 99 journalists were killed around the world in 2018 and 57 last year, according to the UN cultural agency UNESCO, which monitors media security as part of its role.
• The 2019 number, it said, was the lowest annual toll in a decade, while the tally for 2018 and 2019 combined was 14 percent down from the preceding two year period.

7. Anti-Moscow candidate wins first round of Moldova`s presidential poll

• Moldova`s pro-European presidential hopeful Maia Sandu won a surprise first-round victory, a major setback for Moscow backed incumbant Igor Dodon that suggests a tight second round later this month.
• The small former Soviet country voted under the watchful eye of Russia, which wants polarised Moldova to remain in its sphere of influence as several nearby Kremlin-aligned governments are rocked by political unrest

8. Independent-minded foreign correspondent Fisk dies at 74

• Veteran British journalist Robert Fisk, one of the best-known Middle East correspondents who spent his career reporting from the troubled region and won accolades for challenging mainstream narratives, has died after a short illness, his employer said on November 2, 2020. He was 74.
• Fisk, whose reporting often sparked controversy, died on Sunday at a hospital in Dublin, shortly after he was taken there after falling ill at his home in the Irish capital. The Independent, where he had worked since 1989, described him as the most celebrated journalist of hisera

9. Peru reopens Machu Picchu after eight months

• The Inca citadel of Machu Picchu, the crown jewel of Peru`s tourist sites, reopened on November 1, 2020 with an ancient ritual after a nearly eight-month lockdown due to the pandemic.
• For safety reasons, however, only 675 tourists will be able to visit the site per day, just 30 percent of the number of visitors prepandemic.
• Under a fine drizzle and multicoloured lights, an Inca ritual was held in the evening to thank the gods for the citadel`s reopening.

10. Sindh retain National U19 One-Day title

• Northern presented the National U19 One-Day Tournament title to Sindh on a silver platter when they lost their last nine wickets for 38 runs to lose the final by 53 runs at the Gaddafi Stadium on November 2, 2020.
• Chasing 243 runs in 50 overs for victory, Northern were cruising at 151 for one before they were mesmerised by wrist-spinner Aaliyan Mehmood to be spun out for 189 in 44.3 overs.
