1. Sindh declares vaccination mandatory for all

• While the Sindh government has declared vaccination against Covid-19 mandatory for all citizens, authorities in Islamabad have decided that Pfizer vaccine will be administered only to pilgrims and other people going abroad.
• Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah, presiding over a meeting of the Provincial Task Force on Coronavirus at CM House on Thursday, announced the decision to declare vaccination mandatory for all citizens in the province.
• He directed the chief secretary to give a month to government/semi-government/local government employees for getting themselves vaccinated and stop payment of salaries to those who f ailed to get themselves vaccinated by the end of June

2. `Toy` grenade blast leaves three teenage boys dead

• Three teenage boys died and two others suffered injuries in a hand grenade explosion that occurred near a seminary in the Kharotabad area on June 3, 2021.
• The officials of the Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) said that the boys, aged between 13 and 18 years, were passing through a graveyard while on their way home when they found the device.
• `It was a hand-grenade, which exploded when boys started playing with it,` the CTD spokesman said, adding that splinters hit the children, killing three of them on the spot and injuring the two.

3. Pakistan`s first HVDC transmission line passes testing

• Testing for the evacuation, transmission, dispatch and distribution of 2,200MW of electricity by the country`s first high voltage direct current (HVDC) Matiari-Lahore transmission line was successfully carried out on Thursday, paving the way for the launch of the line`s formal operation on Sept1, a revised date for the commercial operation of the mega project being completed under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).
• `Since the line has been designed to evacuate 4,000MW from the power plants in south (Sindh) in alternative current (AC) mode, convert it in direct current (DC) at a convertor station at Matiari (Sindh, near Hyderabad), transport/transmit it in DC mode and dispatch it to the distribution systems of the power distribution companies after converting it from AC to DC at a convertor station near Bhai Pheru (Lahore), the transmission and dispatch test of 2,200MW is a major test ahead of the commercial operation of the line set for Sept 1.

4. Peace in Afghanistan linked to its closer ties with Pakistan, China

• Pakistan on Thursday underscored the need for closer trilateral cooperation between Islamabad, Kabul and Beijing for peace and stability in Afghanistan and the region.
• `We should, therefore, explore how our three neighbourly countries can work together to deal with the evolving situation in an effective manner and steer it towards achieving our shared objective of lasting peace and stability in Afghanistan and the region,` Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi said at the 4th Session of China-Afghanistan Pakistan foreign ministers` dialogue

5. US to send 13m vaccines to South Asia, other regions

• President Joe Biden announced on Thursday that the United States would dispatch seven million Covid-19 vaccines to South and Southeast Asia to help regional governments overcome the pandemic.
• India, however, will get its share from another tranche of six million vaccines kept aside for the countries experiencing surges, the White House said.
• Pakistan and Bangladesh will get their shares from the seven million marked for distribution in South and Southeast Asia.
• Under the new programme, the US will donate 75 percent of its unused vaccines to the UN-backed Covax global vaccine sharing programme

6. Papers reveal UK royals` ban on `coloured` office staff

• Senior aides to Queen Elizabeth II barred the hiring of `coloured immigrants or foreigners` in office roles at Buckingham Palace until at least the late 1960s, a media report said on June 3, 2021.
• The Queen and Britain`s royal household also negotiated an exemption from 1970s-era laws on race and sex discrimination that still exists today, The Guardian reported.
• Citing historical papers it unearthed at the National Archives, the newspaper said that in 1968, the Queen`s chief financial manager told government officials of the hiring policy towards ethnic minorities

7. Britons to be quarantined on return from Portugal

• Portugal will be removed from England`s so called green travel list allowing quarantine-free travel between the two countries, the UK government said on June 3, 2021, in a move slammed by Britain`s tourism sector.
• The move could prove highly disruptive to thousands of British holidaymakers, after Portugal was the only European nation placed on the green list when it was first unveiled last month.
• A popular summer destination for Britons, from Tuesday at 4am Portugal will be on the amber list, which requires travellers to quarantine at home for 10 days on their return and take several Covid-19 tests

8. Palestine FM criticises India for abstention at UN vote

• Days after India abstained at the UN Human Rights Council on a resolution proposing to set up a Commission of Inquiry into violations related to Israel`s recent bombardment of Gaza, the foreign minister of the Palestinian National Authority has complained that New Delhi`s abstention `stifles the important work of advancing human rights for all peoples, including those of the Palestinian people` `India missed an opportunity to join the international community at this turning point, both crucial and long overdue, on the path to accountability, justice and peace,` Indian Express quoted Riyad al-Maliki as saying in a sharply worded letter to External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar.
• India was among 14 countries that abstained on the proposal for an inquiry into the widely condemned human rights violations around the Israeli action in Gaza, and the `systematic` abuses in the Palestinian territories and inside Israel

9. In first for Israel, Arab party on road to joining coalition government

• A party representing Arab citizens of Israel has for the first time joined an Israeli coalition to form a government, but many doubt the move can end decades of political marginalisation.
• Arab Israeli Mansour Abbas, the head of the conservative Islamic Raam party, on June 2, 2021 signed onto an eleventh-hour deal hoping to oust the country`s longest-serving premier, Benjamin Netanyahu.
• An image of the lawmaker of Palestinian descent at a table with centrist Yair Lapid and right-wing nationalist Naftali Bennett, all three grinning, captured a historic moment and circulated widely on social media

10. PSL set to resume in Abu Dhabi on June 9

• The coronavirus-disrupted HBL-Pakistan Super League season finally has a restart date.
• The Pakistan Cricket Board on June 3, 2021 announced that the sixth season of the PSL will resume at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi from June 9 after it had ironed out logistical and operational challenges to finish its premier domestic Twenty20 league.
• With the final set for June 24 according to the much-awaited schedule for the remaining 20 matches, the PCB moved forward the departure programme of the national team`s tour to England with the team now set to fly out on June 25, two days later than initially planned.
