1. Tajikistan to buy weapons from Pakistan

• Tajikistan on June 2, 2021 agreed to buy weapons from Pakistan as the two countries vowed to upgrade their strategic cooperation.
• Prime Minister Imran Khan, while speaking alongside visiting Tajikistan President Emomali Rahmon after witnessing the signing of bilateral memorandums of understanding, said defence cooperation was an important element of bilateral ties and Tajikistan`s requirement of weapons made in Pakistan was discussed in their meeting and an MoU for their sale was signed.
• Mr Rahmon is on a two-day official visit to Pakistan


2. Trade deficit surges by 134pc

• Pakistan`s merchandise trade deficit in May ballooned by 134 per cent from what it was a year ago on the back of lower export proceeds and higher than expected imports, commerce ministry data showed on June 2, 2021.
• The monthly deficit reached $3.432 billion in May 2021 from $1.467bn a year ago raising fear it will create a problem for the government in controlling external accounts. In rupee terms, the trade deficit was posted at 125.2pc on a year on-year basis.
• The trade gap has been widening since December 2020. The surge in trade deficit is mainly led by exponential growth in imports with comparative slow growth in export proceeds from the country


3. Pakistani startups win £668,000 GSMA grant

• The GSMA Innovation Fund for Mobile Internet Adoption and Digital Inclusion announced three Pakistani startups as winners out of the 597 applications received from 44 countries.
• The winning Pakistani startups Vceela, Knowledge Platform and Orenda Pakistan will receive a total grant of £668,000 (Rs146 million).
• Addressing the occasion virtually, GSMA Head of Asia Pacific Julian Gorman said digital technologies are set to transform the way people live and work in Pakistan


4. Pandemic has plunged 100m workers into poverty: UN

• The Covid-19 pandemic has pushed more than 100 million more workers into poverty, the UN said on June 2, 2021, after working hours plummeted and access to good-quality jobs evaporated.
• And the labour market crisis created by the pandemic was far from over, the UN`s International Labour Organisation warned in a report.
• Employment was not expected to bounce back to pre-pandemic levels until 2023 at the earliest, it said.


5. Exams of classes IX to XII to be held after July 10

• Federal Minister for Education and Professional Training (FE&PT) Shafqat Mahmood on June 2, 2021 announced that examination boards will conduct only ‘elective subjects’ exams of Matriculation and Intermediate students.
• The Minister announced this here in a Press briefing after the meeting of Inter-Provincial Education Ministers Conference (IPEMC) held to discuss upcoming examinations of Matriculation and Intermediate.
• Shafqat Mahmood said that it has been decided in the IPEMC that students of 9th, 10th 11th and 12 will only give exams of elective subjects and will be exempted from compulsory subjects exams.


6. France creates agency to fight foreign disinformation

• The French government on June 2, 2021 announced plans to set up an agency to combat foreign disinformation and fake news that aims to `undermine the state`.
• The move comes as France begins preparing for a presidential election in under a year`s time.
• During the last such election in 2012, groups linked to Russia were blamed for a massive hacking attack on the party of centrist President Emmanuel Macron, who faced anti EU nationalist Marine Le Pen in the runoff


7. China hosts 3-state moot on Afghanistan today

• China would host virtual trilateral Afghan talks on today with Pakistan and Afghanistan in participation to review the peace and security situation in Afghanistan in the wake of US forces withdrawal, which is in progress.
• Pakistan confirmed that it would attend a trilateral meeting on Afghanistan hosted by China which would focus on reviewing the entire peace and reconciliation process and discuss strategy after withdrawal. Afghan Foreign Minister Muhammad Hanif Atmar who would virtually join the conference from Kabul would brief his Pakistani and Chinese counterparts about the latest security situation in Afghanistan with an update on security forces withdrawal and future strategy to deal with the security challenge


8. Isaac Herzog elected Israel`s president

• Modest, diplomatic and with a strong political pedigree, Isaac Herzog was elected president of Israel in a landslide on June 2, 2021 to the largely ceremonial position.
• It`s a fitting post for the Tel Aviv-born politician, a scion of one of Israel`s most prestigious families, sometimes referred to as Israel`s version of the Kennedys.
• He won easily over Miriam Peretz a former headmistress who lost two sons in Israel`s wars and is known as `the mother of sons`.


9. Over 1.98B coronavirus vaccine shots given worldwide

• Over 1.98 billion coronavirus vaccine shots have so far been administered worldwide, figures compiled by Our World in Data, a tracking website, showed on June 2, 2021.
• China leads the global count with 681.91 million jabs, followed by the US with 296.4 million.
• India has administered 218.55 million shots, Brazil 68.24 million, the UK 65.21 million, Germany 51.54 million, France 36.78 million, Italy 35.43 million, and Mexico 30.99 million
• Turkey is ranked 10th on the list with over 29.42 million doses given, followed by Russia, Indonesia, Spain, and Canada.


10. Researchers engineered new fly species

• Researchers create novel CRISPR-based fly species as a new method of controlling gene drive spread.
• CRISPR-based technologies offer enormous potential to benefit human health and safety, from disease eradication to fortified food supplies.
• As one example, CRISPR-based gene drives, which are engineered to spread specific traits through targeted populations, are being developed to stop the transmission of devastating diseases such as malaria and dengue fever.
