Meet Awaid Irshad Bhatti (First in Pakistan – CSS 2017)
CSS is one of the toughest and the most prestigious exams in the country. Despite any institutional weaknesses, we can proudly say that it is an exam based upon merit and allows people of all strata of the society to get an opportunity to be in the highest echelons of power. The first and foremost step of the exam therefore is to forget your background and sincerely focus on devising a structure and preparation plan for it that caters to the need of the exam. Where you might have a weakness, others might be stronger and vice versa. So try to learn from everybody and respect all your peers and teachers in this process and stay humble praising Allah in all your accomplishments.
It is an exam that requires a targeted strategy and an analytical approach. So try to analyse all your surroundings and try to think how these current happenings can be incorporated in your work. And practice extensively, since with every attempt you validate your preparation as well as your notes.
My name is Awaid Irshad. I was always motivated by the idea of representing my country and creating a positive name for it. From college days, I was public speaker addressing issues of our country in conferences in Asia and Europe. My degree was largely catered towards understanding how Public Policy and administration can be improved further in our nation and how we can learn from the experiences of other states.
My motivation to learn more about the area allowed me to excel in my academics and Masha Allah took me to some of the top universities in this world.
My father was a government officer and thus he always made it clear that I and my brothers could only go on scholarships and thus we had to work hard not only to get an admission but also to qualify for scholarship.
However it is important to remember that CSS does not require a bookworm. All experiences in your life shape your personality. I was a lead singer, guitarist and drummer and we performed in concerts in UK, US and Pakistan under ‘AnH Sessions‘. I was a professional cricketer for Kampong Club in Netherlands and Cambridge University. Alongside, I love to travel so saved money every month to discover new places and cultures.
After my education, despite having lucrative offers to work abroad, I decided to come back to my homeland that has given me everything I have today. In March 2016, I started the CSS preparation. I worked hard, consulted my seniors and above all sat in all practice tests and exams. These allow you to self-correct your notes and your preparation through every step.

Remember in this time that commitment and focus on the exam preparation is the key. There are so many other capable candidates that are preparing and the moment you are not studying, somebody else is working towards that seat.
Success in CSS is a combination of smart work and focus. But above all, it is a direct result of the prayers and wishes of your teachers and parents. So always stay humble and try to help everybody who comes to you.
Even if you do not pass this exam, the broad learning of our society throughout this process makes you a better person.
I want to encourage the best students of our country to come to the Civil Services. Because despite all issues, it is our home and it is our foremost responsibility to do whatever is in our power to help create a positive change.
