1. Senior TTP leader killed in Afghanistan: official

• A senior leader of the banned Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) has been killed in eastern Afghanistan.
• The official identified the terrorist as Mufti Khalid Balti, also known as Mohammad Khorasani.
• He was reportedly killed over the last weekend by unidentified gunmen in Afghanistan`s Nangarhar province. It appeared from some of the pictures circulating on social media that he was shot in the forehead. Specific details of the incident were not available. A source separately claimed that Balti`s mutilated body was found in a sack.
• Balti, who was in his late forties, remained TTP spokesman and the head of its media cell for some time after his predecessor Shahidullah Shahid left the group and joined the militant Islamic State group.

2. Opposition in NA rejects Punjab govt body probing Murree tragedy

• Holding the federal and Punjab governments directly responsible for the Murree tragedy, the opposition parties in the National Assembly on January 10, 2022 rejected the inquiry committee formed by Chief Minister Usman Buzdar and called for constituting a judicial commission to fix responsibility, besides asking Prime Minister Imran Khan to step down over his alleged failure to protect the lives of innocent people at a distance merely two-hour drive from the capital.
• The lower house of parliament on the opening day of its new session again saw the members from both sides indulging in a blame game over the Murree incident as Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry, while responding to the opposition`s criticism, alleged that the previous rulers did nothing for promotion of tourism and their focus remained on building `palaces` for themselves

3. NA panel approves SBP amendment bill

• The National Assembly`s Standing Committee on Finance and Revenue on January 10, 2022 cleared the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) Amendment Bill 2021 with a couple of changes suggested by the opposition members.
• The panel, chaired by Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) MNA Faiz Ullah, was assured by Finance Minister Shaukat Tarin that the bill did not envisage absolute autonomy to the central bank, but only sought to enhance its independence. He said the government would appoint the board of directors that would control the central bank and its senior management.
• In any case, the government retains the option to amend the proposed law with a simple majority in parliament if, at any time, it felt the financial sector regulator appeared to be enjoying absolute powers, he said.
• He said the SBP governor would not have full powers to appoint or sack senior management and the government would have the powers to examine such decisions.

4. KP Assembly passes resolution for merger of reconstruction bodies with NDMA

• The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly on January 10, 2022 adopted a government resolution for the merger of the provincial and federal reconstruction and rehabilitation bodies with the National Disaster Management Authority amid the opposition`s strong disapproval.
• The opposition lawmakers declared the move an attempt to roll back the 18th Constitutional Amendment, which led to the devolution of the centre`s administrative and financial powers to the provinces.
• A heated debate was witnessed on the resolution during the session chaired by Speaker Mushtaq Ahmad Ghani

5. ECP restores Dar`s victory notification as Senator

• The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has restored the victory notification of former finance minister Ishaq Dar as senator.
• A notification to this effect was issued on Monday pursuant to the order of the Supreme Court.
• On March 9, 2018, the ECP had issued the notification declaring Mr Dar, a PML-N leader, as returned candidate for the Senate from Punjab on a technocrat seat.
• The apex court on May 8, 2018 had ordered the ECP that the notification declaring Mr Dar a member of the upper house be suspended for his failure to appear before the court despite repeated summons

6. UN convenes talks to help resolve Sudan`s political crisis

• The United Nations will launch talks to help Sudan resolve its escalating political crisis triggered by last year`s military coup, the UN envoy said on January 10, 2022, earning a mixed response.
• `It is time to end the violence and enter into a comprehensive consultative process,` said UN special representative Volker Perthes, vowing at a press conference to facilitate `indirect talks` between all sides.
• His comments came a day after Sudanese security forces again fired tear gas at anti-coup protesters, leaving two demonstrators dead including one who died on Monday morning from wounds to the head

7. Kazakh president claims defeating `attempted coup`

• Kazakhstan`s President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev said on January 10, 2022 his country had defeated an attempted coup d`etat during historic violence last week, blaming militants from Central Asia, Afghanistan and the Middle East for the unrest.
• He also insisted that Russian-led troops called in to help quell the unrest were in the country to only protect strategic facilities and would go home `soon`.
• The Central Asian country is reeling in the wake of the worst violence in its recent history, but life in Kazakhstan`s largest city Almaty appeared to be returning to normal on Monday as the nation observed a day of mourning for dozens killed.

8. Last seven years `warmest on record` globally, says EU

• The last seven years have been the hottest on record globally `by a clear margin`, the European Union`s climate monitoring service reported on January 10, 2022, as it raised the alarm over sharp increases in record concentrations of methane in the atmosphere.
• Countries around the world have been blasted by a relentless assault of weather disasters linked to global warming in recent years, including record shattering wildfires across Australia and Siberia, a once-in-1000-years heatwave in North America and extreme rainfall that caused massive flooding in Asia, Africa, the US and Europe.
• In its latest annual assessment, the Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) confirmed that 2021 had joined the unbroken warm streak since 2015

9. Dutch king swears in new ruling coalition

• Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte embarked on a fourth term on January 10, 2022, leading a coalition that took office amid a nationwide coronavirus lockdown and policy challenges ranging from climate change and housing shortages to the future of agriculture.
• King Willem-Alexander formally swore in the new government at a socially-distanced ceremony in the ballroom of the Noordeinde Palace in The Hague.

10. Suu Kyi to serve another four-year jail term

• A court in military ruled Myanmar on Monday sentenced ousted leader Aung San Suu Kyi to four years in jail on charges including possession of unlicensed wallkie-talkies, a source familiar with the proceedings said.
• The latest sentencing in legal proceedings that rights groups have criticised as a farce and a `courtroom circus` means she faces a six year jail term after two convictions last month.
• She is on trial in nearly a dozen cases that carry combined maximum sentences of more than 100 years in prison. She denies all charges
