1. Eight personnel martyred in Tank, SWa clashes
• Eight security personnel, including an army captain, were martyred and seven terrorists were killed in clashes between security forces and members of the proscribed Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa`s Tank district and adjacent South Waziristan tribal district on March 30, 2022.
• Soon after the incidents, Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa landed in Peshawar and was briefed at the corps headquarters about the security situation in tribal districts, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said in a statement.
• `COAS reiterated the resolve of the Pakistan army to fight against terror-ism till the elimination of this menace and sacrifices of martyred will not go in vain and complete peace will return to Pakistan,` the statement quoted Gen Bajwa as saying
2. E-passport to ensure security, promote tourism: PM
• Prime Minister Imran Khan on March 30, 2022 said the use of technology has eased people`s lives and curbed corruption.
• Addressing the inaugural ceremony of e-passport, the prime minister said 22 years ago, Shaukat Khanum Hospital introduced paperless working, which made a huge difference by doing away with petty corruption and bringing about transparency.
• Appreciating the interior ministry and the National Database and Registration Authority (Nadra), he said the e-passport would not only help end queues at the airports but also ensure security.
• It would also help promote tourism, which, besides remittances, was the other solution to bridge the trade gap, he added
3. Country faces power outages amid 3,000MW shortage
• Homes nationwide power outages on Wednesday amid a power shortage of over 3,000 megawatts in the country.
• Sources in the National Transmission and Despatch Company said K-2 and K-3 nuclear power plants near Jamshoro with a generation capacity of 1,200 Mw each were suspended due to a fault in the plants, resulting in a power shortage of 2,400 MW in the country.
• A source said the plants could not be operated in an emergency because international experts would have to be called first to fix the problem. A team of international experts would fix the problem and the situation would become normal Thursday morning (March 31, 2022), he said.
4. Local body elections in 18 KP districts today
• With voting for the second phase of local body elections slated to take place in 18 districts today (March 31, 2022), the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Election Commission of Pakistan on Wednesday dispatched election material and staff to polling stations.
• Over eight million people registered with the ECP are eligible to participate in the electoral exercise as voters. They include 3.56 million women.
• The first phase of local body election was held in 17 districts on Dec 19
5. ECC approves Rs97bn grants
• The Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) of the Cabinet on March 30, 2022 approved about Rs97 billion worth of supplementary grants including Rs16bn gas subsidy for fertilisers and over Rs79hn subsidy to export sectors.
• The meeting of the ECC presided over by Minister for Finance and Revenue Shaukat Tarin was attended by only two other out of 14 members including Planning Minister Asad Umar and National Food Security & Research Minister Syed Fakhar Imam.
• Adviser to PM on Commerce & Investment Abdul Razak Dawood, Federal Secretaries, Governor SBP, Chairman Planning Commission also attended the meeting
