6. Karachi experiences hottest March day on record

• As the Met Office forecast on March 30, 2022 a spell of hot and dry weather in the country that would begin on Friday and last for 10 days, its largest city recorded its highest temperature for the month of March, with the mercury rising to 42.5 degrees Celsius.
• Earlier, the highest-ever temperature experienced in the city in the month was 42.2 degrees Celsius, which was recorded on March 20, 2010, according to the Met department that has weather data dating back to 1931.
• According to the department, hot and dry weather conditions in Karachi are likely to continue for the next two days and the maximum temperature may range between 39 degrees Celsius and 41 degrees till Friday


7. UN, US press for broader Yemen truce amid Houthi absence

• United Nations and United States envoys on March 30, 2022 welcomed unilateral truce moves by Yemen`s warring sides as encouraging steps, while stressing the need for a more comprehensive ceasefire that would help alleviate a dire humanitarian crisis.
• The Saudi-led coalition fighting Yemen`s Houthis had said it would temporarily halt military operations from Wednesday after the Iran-aligned group this week declared a three-day cessation of cross-border attacks and ground offensives in Yemen.
• As part of efforts to end the seven year-old war that has killed tens of thousands and pushed millions into hunger, the initiatives followed a UN call for a truce during Ramazan that starts this week


8. WB freezes Afghan projects

• The World Bank has put four projects in Afghanistan worth $600 million on hold amid concerns over a decision by the Taliban regime to ban girls from returning to public high schools, the bank said.
• The projects, to be funded under the revamped Afghanistan Reconstruction Trust Fund, were being readied for implementation by the United Nations agencies to support projects in agriculture, education, health and livelihoods.
• But the bank`s guidance requires all ARTF financed activities to support access to and equity of services for women and girls in Afghanistan, the bank said, citing its deep concerns over the Taliban`s ban on girls attending high school.


9. US astronaut, two Russian cosmonauts return home from ISS

• A US astronaut and two Russian cosmonauts safely landed in Kazakhstan on Wednesday after leaving the International Space Station aboard the same capsule despite heightened antagonism between Moscow and Washington over the conflict in Ukraine.
• The flight carrying Nasa`s Mark Vande Hei and Russians Anton Shkaplerov and Pyotr Dubrov back to Earth had been closely watched to determine whether escalating strife had spilled over into longtime cooperation in space between the two former Cold War adversaries.
• Russian space agency Roscosmos broadcast footage of the landing from the Kazakh steppe and said a group of technical and medical specialists had been dispatched to help the astronauts out of the capsule


10. Pakistani diplomat dies

• Consul General of Pakistan in Los Angeles Abdul Jabbar Memon passed away, the Pakistan Embassy announced on March 30, 2022.
• He has been fighting a contagious disease for some years.
• Mr Memon had been serving as Consul General in Los Angeles since December 21, 2015.
• `We announce with deep sorrow that our colleague Abdul Jabbar Memon, Consul General in Los Angeles, has passed away,` Pakistan`s US Ambassador Masood Khan said in a statement issued in Washington
