1. Pakistan losing LNG bidding war to Europe
• With a spiraling energy crisis brought on by the Russian invasion of Ukraine putting pressure on global fuel reserves, a key member of the federal cabinet admitted on June 25, 2022 that the country simply could not compete with the buying power of European countries who were also potential customers for the same reserves that Pakistan desperately needed.
• According to State Minister for Petroleum Musadik Malik, Pakistan`s failure to find a bidder for liquefied natural gas (LNG) slots had forced authorities to shift to alternative sources of energy for power generation, which would take a month or so to yield results.
• `The situation is that we have carried out two rounds of tenders of three to four tenders each, but no one responded to them,` he said in reply to a question put to him by a journalist during a media interaction on the sidelines of a two-day conference organised by the Centre for Excellence in Journalism (CEJ) at the Institute of Business Administration (IBA)
2. FO asks G-20 to keep away from events in Indian-held Kashmir
• Pakistan on June 25, 2022 cautioned G-20 countries against accepting Delhi`s proposal for holding some of the meetings of the bloc`s next year`s summit in India-held Jammu and Kashmir, saying it was India`s attempt to legitimise its illegal control of the disputed region.
• `Pakistan completely rejects any such attempt by India,` Foreign Office spokesman Asim Iftikhar said in response to reports that Delhi was planning to hold some of the G-20`s 2023 summit-related events in India-held Kashmir.
• India will assume the presidency of G-20 countries, a bloc of advanced and emerging economies, for next year. As the president of the grouping, India would host the Leaders` Summit, and ministerial and officials` meetings. Civil society events would also be planned on this occasion
3. AJK unveils Rs164bn budget amid opposition boycott
• The Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) government has unveiled a Rs163.7 billion budget for the next fiscal year in the legislative assembly on Saturday amid a boycott by the combined opposition.
• The budget outlay comprises Rs28.5bn for development and Rs135.2bn for recurring expenses.
• The session, presided over by Deputy Speaker Chaudhry Riaz Gujjar, started more than three hours behind schedule, as a ministerial team kept on trying to pacify the opposition.
• In the previous session, the opposition announced a boycott of proceedings over `unlawful amendments` to the assembly`s rules of procedure as well as the `denial of an equal share of development funds` to them by the government despite an apex court judgement
4. Pakistan ranks 29th among countries having gas reserves
• Pakistan ranks 29th among the countries holding natural gas reserves.
• This was revealed in the findings of a gas monitor report presented by Dr Amanullah Mahar, Director Center for Environmental Sciences, University of Sindh, Jamshoro.
• He said total extractable potential is reported around 24 TCFT, however, 4 billion cubic feet (BCFT) is the daily gas production.
• He said Sindh had 124gas Helds and accounts for 63pc. The biggest Held of natural gas is in the Sul region of Balochistan accounting for 6pc.
• Country has proven reserves equivalent to 12 times its annual consumption
5. Free meal initiative launched in GB schools
• Gilgit-Baltistan Chief Minister Khalid Khurshid Khan and chief secretary Mohyuddin Ahmed Wani on June 25, 2022 launched a free-meal initiative for students in government schools.
• The `school Khana (food) programme` was inaugurated at a function held in a government primary school in Khomar area of Gilgit.
• Speaking on the occasion, Mr Khurshid said GB became the first region in Pakistan where free meal would be provided to students in government schools. He said providing food to schoolchildren would help ensure their mental and physical development and enhance literacy rate
